Tautusian, that's a great vision! But unfortunately most conductors don't do the funeral in a proud and triumphant way anymore. They pluck this great piece of music into pieces until the music almost comes to a standstill. It's supposed to be a march, but it's hardly played that way anymore. I only heard this funeral march once as it should be played - and it was breath taking and completely overwhelming. I think the reason for this development is the ideological misuse of Wagner's music during the Third Reich. I understand this - but it's a pity nevertheless.

This is one of the greatest Rings ever. What genius to have Anne Evans and John Tomlinson come on stage to pay homage during the Funeral March. This Ring is so intelligent and so human. I love it.

And that was something only possible in Bayreuth. Nowhere else would the singer of Wotan be persuaded to have an appearence in an opera he is actually not in.
As I was not there to see it live, I wonder though if that isn't a one time action only. Specifcally shot for the Video. The cut at the end seems to suggest it.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the cinema of the 1870s. Much better sound quality (original orchestra right in front of you) and actors do their job live on stage. Not that prefilmed shite we have today projected onto a bedsheet.

But at the very end a small boy took a small girl, let the other people behind the curtain and he flashes her and him the way with a flashlight. So there is hope!
