    Here we go. Sam and I discuss the things we felt/learned after riding the 2003 Honda CR250R back to back with his more modern 2018 KTM 250 XC. Yes, the Honda is a good starting platform to work from, but we need to continue to fine tune it in order to make this bike work as a woods/singletrack/enduro bike.
    Here are some links to the gear I’m using today in this video. The amazon links are pretty easy to see, but the other links are for Rocky Mountain ATV/MC. They look a little strange, but they get to you to the right place :)

    CR250R is a race bike , closed circuit race bike.. it's meant to be driven hard through corners ,not to pull the clutch in and roll around corners or rail Berms ...it's meant to be driven through corners... that means throttle on... that means steering with the rear end ...that means keeping the front end planted to the ground at the right pressure using the throttle ...that doesn't equate to a good off-road bike ...that equates to a good motocross bike but not a not a good trail bike .......I think that is the point here.... and I think they've expressed that point gratuitously...

      It will work great in the woods with a faster more aggressive rider. Do you see how this man sits in a corner!! Gary bailey would break his whip on this dudes wrist. Faster is usually safer too. Don't take advice from this guy.

      @@justinclackler8990 I have no idea why Kyle rides 2-strokes. He rides like he's on a 4-stroke. He was complaining about the non linear torque...... isn't that the point of a 2-stroke?

      Personally, I use my cr 250 for everything. Trails, on the track. Wheelies. And your absolutely correct. It’s better for aggressive riders. While he says and acts like the cr is supposed to be an “enduro bike”, it’s not. But if your aggressive enough. You learn to rip hard on it. And use every bit of it to your advantage.

      Not bashing because I love Honda, but this bike is set up for a Carmichael type rider.
      - Sagging the rear (short rider) to get weight off the forks.
      - Wide open throttle performance ALL THE TIME to plow through everything.
      - Small rider triangle for short people and taller people can't stand comfortably.
      It almost seems Honda planned on bringing on Carmichael to race (sell) red bikes and they developed the bike around that rider. Maybe??
      I loved my '98. Awesome mid and top. Bottom end power was okay, and ergonomics catered to taller rider. The "stiff" frame was not something that bothered me at all. The motor was so good, you could bolt it to a 2x4 and still love riding.

    I picked up a brand new 05 Cr250 in 2008 and have been riding it since. Taller bars and fastway pegs in the low setting. Fmf gnarly pipe which really woke up the bottom end. Also had the head milled by rb design to run better on pump gas. Also ditched the stock carb and put a keihn carb. I ride mostly single track and honestly I love it! I can rip on the bike. But... I have not rode any newer Ktms. I think anyone can rip on what they get used too! I’ve got some videos on my channel of riding if interested

    I really enjoy this project and your reviews. Whenever we take someone with us who has an MX bike and tries to ride gnarly Rocky Mountain trails with us, it just rarely ever works. For those who think you whine about the lack of e-start, they have simply never experienced the joy of having it when stuck on the side of a precarious hill with no means to balance the bike to kick start it when it dies. E-start is a life saver. Gearing and suspension on MX bikes are simply not correct for technical singletrack. Yep, some riders manage it, but they don't know what they are missing if they've never ridden a modern 2-stroke off road machine with the happy button, proper gearing, and a cushy suspension. Hope you and your family have a very happy holiday season.

There is a lot of us that have bought older bikes (as that is the only thing we could afford) and have tried to improve them to we enjoy them even more. I know that you will persevere and get the CR dial in and she will be running close to the other big dogs in this market segment! The front bites hard on Honda, meaning all the other stuff negligible because you can corner faster. The cr is harder to ride but if I were going for speed the ancient honda wins all day! I own a 2002 KX250 and ride woods. One of the first things I did was install a flywheel weight. It made a huge difference in low end torque, traction, and helped me to stall less often. The best mod I made was to get the suspension re-valved. Getting the suspension correct was a game changer in my riding ability and confidence to take on more technical terrain. The vintage CR will never be as good as a new KTM but with the flywheel weight and re-valved suspension you should be able to keep up with your buddies.

      I would die to ride that bike! Can we swap bikes for a day in the future??? Lmbo You'd probably let me come within about 10ft of the Maico's proximity, and that's probably about it!!?? And who could blame you? Those bikes are amazingly powerful - always ready to bark & bite!!! They are still to this day one of the most gorgeous bikes ever made...way more exotic and beautiful than a large amount of modern day bikes!
      So when can we arrange this play date? Lol You never know...you might take me on my offer if you'd be interested in riding the new series of the carborated TM EN300ES. I find the bike very well designed and engineered...you can get all two stroke in fuel injected form or carborated according to what the buyer prefers. Maico's stopped production not too long after 81, am I right? LUCKY dude, man. Lucky dude...

    $7 GRAND for rebuilding that CR250?? Bro, I love your channel and your videos, but you need a new parts supplier. I have a 2004 CR250 that I rebuilt myself from the ground up; complete new bottom end, new OEM bearings, Millennium Tech rebuilt the crank with a Pro-X rod, brand new OEM cylinder, Wisco forged piston, I rebuilt the lower linkage, had my swingarm repaired by Trick Engineering, rebuilt the rear shock, new OEM front sprocket, new chain, went up to a 52T rear sprocket, swapped the carb to a new Keihin AS from JD Jetting, had my suspension revalved and resprung for my weight and tuned for trail/woods riding, replaced the rear wheel with a Tusk 18" (relaced using OEM hub) and threw on a new IRC VE33S, new front tire, new graphics, new Tusk rear brakes rotor guard, new seat cover, new Wiseco billet clutch basket, a new clutch pack and a Devol Racing skid plate... With all of that I know I spent about 1/4 of that $7,043 that you spent on parts alone. I didn't see the need for a flywheel weight because I've learned, and still learning, to use the clutch to grab that low end torque when I need it. E-start, ehhh, if you like and have to have it, good for you. LOL Learning to kick over your bike on a tall hillside, or whatever, only makes you a better trail/woods rider IMO. (Plus I'm not dependant on a battery operated system that if it fails out in the woods and I have no kickstart, I'm pushing all the way back to the parking lot.) I think you just went way overboard in what you (say you) spent on the CR250 just to make a case for the KTM. I'm not a good trail rider by no means, but my CR250 has zero problems keeping up with my friends Shercos, KTMs and Husqvarnas. It also glides right up the same technical hill climbs that their bikes do. But I know it's supposed to be an apples to oranges comparison... but it seemed like the video was more geared towards trying to make the CR250 (along with the insane, useless amount of money you spent on "upgrades") a comparable bike to the KTM, only to point out an older MX bike's shortcomings on the trails to a much newer bike that was factory built for the trails.

    Hey Kyle. Nice review on the bike. It seems like that bike is made for someone 5'5" with tiny feet. I have a YZ250R converted to trail, and I have the same problem with plow. I jumped on my buddies KTM 250 2 stroke, and the handling and turning was so much better. Some of the things I have done to make the YZ250 trail worthy: Gnarly Pipe, Boyesen Power Reeds, Hi Compression Head, Flywheel Weight, Rekluse Clutch. With those mods, I have a ton of low end power and can lug up a steep trail in third gear without it dying. I think the Boyesen Power Reeds make an improvement on low end because it's a dual stage reed. One set opens on low end, next set opens for top end. That is a very cheap mod which may instantly give that bike more torque. Have fun!

    Honda CR250R. Even though it’s been out of production in the U.S. since 2007, the CR probably won more combined amateur and professional races than any other motorcycle in the dirt world. And they are still out there winning. The CR is a hot commodity on the used-bike market, and on start lines across America, they still outnumber many current models. I would suggest getting suspension and tyre pressure dialed in. Ricky Carmichael kicked some serious arse on this bike. No more poo poo on the CR250 thank you.

    Picked up my 2003 CR250R brand new in 2005 as left over stock, for $3500. The only real mod I did besides replacing sprockets and chains, was a Pro Circuit pipe. I mainly only replaced that pipe due to putting a big dent in the stock pipe. Had fun on it for years but a due to a small wreck, where the throttle went wide open and I got tossed, the bike died. I want to get it repaired, looked at some similar year used cr250s that were still going near for what I paid for mine. Ultimately I ended up trading one of my little ridden Harleys in on a CRF450RL. I love this channel. I am your fan for a long time and your channel made my bike decision easy. I love 2strokes and I had a husky wr 125 from 2008, but I have ridden many other bikes. 4strokes and 2strokes. Husqvarna was fine, just like any other enduro 125 2stroke, but as I got better at riding I wanted more power. And that husky kept breaking down all the time. It was in perfect condition, but there were so many issues. I have put so much money into it and still I could not rely on it. In july this year I sold that husky and bought a 2015 beta rr 300 from a friend. That beta had only 25hours on it at the time I bought it. Price was also amazing, since that guy sells beta's in Austria and Switzerland. And I can tell that I have not been on a better bike yet. Enduro 300 2stroke engine is amazing. I love that beta. Yes, it was a big jump from 125 2stroke to 300, but I made a great decision. Some people kept telling me that I should not buy 300 since it has so much torque and power, but I am happy I did. Beta vibrates quite a lot, but I felt it only on the first rides,so it not an issue for me. I have not ridden any TPI yet, but ai don't think I am missing out so much. I enjoy that 300 2stroke bottom end power so much. It can get you in and out of trouble easily. And if there would not be DBC I would have not bought my dream bike. Thanks Kyle for all the work. 🙂

    I'm currently building a 2002 CR250r as a woods bike. Suspension work, gnarly pipe, v-force reeds, and the best upgrade is the SmartCarb. Toss that Lectron away.. I'll be in my bike including purchasing it for under 5.5K. Still would have a hard time finding a well put together Ktm for that price. These mx bikes have their place in the track, but I'm convinced they can be made into a good woods bike.

      My 03 KX 125 was designed for the track and was ridden by a sponsored rider, 10 years its been trail ridden with no changes to the engine other then what was done from the rider before and hasn't failed on me yet. Its insane to ride in the trails keeping up with 450s and 250s easy cause its so light when banking corners and I can actually go faster then most in the trails cause I have had the bike for so long I feel so comfortable on it. also most times the 450 wont actually go very fast in trails or logging roads cause most riders get spooked when they try to reach the limits of there bikes

    Flywheel weight will only make the bottom feel more dead. 13/50-51 gearing and learn how to clutch is what you need. Like someone else said here, soft reeds v force carbon on soft setting. The new soft suspension will make the biggest difference providing you get the fork height and sag set right.

    Nice video. I think the results are to be expected and I don't think it's so much because of it being moto. I think it's really just because it's a 15 year old bike. You can have great Moto bikes for off-road with just a suspension revalve. I came off a 250xc but now on a 17crf250 and I'm picking up a leftover new freshie tomorrow, I am in love with this bike and all I do is offroad, enduros and hare scrambles. (Yes I'm excited even though it's the same bike)
    I've been watching your vids for a bit and think I'll finally subscribe. Glad you have a good support group and recovered from the knee, nobody like guys getting hurt, peace fellas.

    all i can say is that i got a cr 250 3 moths ago and i love this thing i ride in the mountains in a combination of terrains and man this thing is so light and it rips , after i softened the suspension via clickers and rode for a few hours i fell in love with this machine i have no complaints , on slow or fast terrain i previously owned crfs yzfs and a cr 500 and rode 2 stroke and 4 stroke ktms and this is the best by far , i guess its preference some of us like the wild power delivery, and the fun factor , ktms are plusher but i dont know iam faster an have more fun on the cr for some reason,

    1st: use xtrig triple clamps with 20mm offset
    2nd: shorten the wheelbase by approximating the rear wheel to the swingarm axle.Better slow speed handling as well as displacing more weight to the rear wheel to make the front wheel less planted

    Maybe it would be good for you two to actually ride a mx bike for a year or something out in the woods. It will teach you to ride better because you aren’t spoiled with hydraulic clutches or lugging around in 2nd gear. I think by riding an mx bike in the woods it will teach you to be a better rider. Then if you swap back to the wx it will almost feel like cheating? Idk just my two cents. Never once had an issue on my 2008 crf450r. On Average on a single track I’m in 3rd gear.

      @f.c.2831 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to say that you are right, as far as I know about suspension. Kyle was not going the right way to make it turn easier.If the rear side is higher, it will help to decrease the head angle, so it will turn better.Get 95mm SAG on the rear and it will turn
      This is just my opinion. Thanks

  • @jjordon607
    @jjordon607 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You said it yourself! “Nothing like a familiar platform!!!” Maybe you can’t make it turn because you’re only used to riding a KTM ride the CR as much as you’ve ridden the KTM before you say it won’t turn. It will turn, just learn how to make it turn. I have a 2003 and a 2007 and I can turn and ride better on them than I can any KTM.... because that’s what I’m used to. Also if the power is too much for you then put a flywheel weight on. Or just sack up and learn to use the power.

    yall try moving the forks back to a normal position in the clamps? no wonder it is so heavy on the front wheel

  • @JK-ew1cz
    @JK-ew1cz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok. So the fly wheel will make a difference, but you need to lower the triple clamps a bit for single track soften the rebound on the forks and adjust your clickers, soften up the shock and adjust the rebound. If you start pushing into corners ( heavy front wheel ) adjust your clickers until it stops. I personally like a stiffer front end and the rear end on my bike is slowed down ( not to bouncy) I like to track straight through the whoops. Remember this is a 15 year old motocross bike, This bike will not be a KTM. I have no Idea of your speed , but the fact that your try to ride in first says something to me. Get a pair of windham bars or ktm fat bars. You guys look tall. Switching to a hydraulic clutch will help with the hands but look further down the trail and ride in the attack position elbows out, head over the bars and stand with knees slightly bent,That’s how I taught my boys to ride when they were kids. There 25 year old men and pretty darn fast, Im 55 year old fart and chasing them around the woods and the MX track on a 2000 CR 250 with stock gearing and give them a run for there money. They both have new bikes. Most of all enjoy the ride.
