- FLY FISHING FOR NATIVE BROOK TROUT!!
The Appalachian mountains holds some overly impressive brook trout, mostly known for their bright colors. So when I went out fishing last week looking at some new water, I knew my chances of catching one of the most beautiful fish on earth was very likely. However what I didn't expect was to catch one so BIG!
I started out the day catching numbers, but nothing of size. This was somewhat welcome just because I didn't know what I was getting into when I fished this small creek since I had never been there before. But after fishing for several hours without seeing a fish over 8 inches, with most of them being around 4-6 inches I was getting discouraged.
Then finally, as I came up to a big hole I knew HAD to have a larger fish if any existed in the creek... it happened. It's funny watching the fishing video back because I almost called it out before it happened. But I caught this big brook trout out of a nasty log jam. It set up perfect for a jig streamer which is exactly how I caught the fish. To say I was happy would've been an understatement.
I then decided to go lower in the creek to fish some bigger water and sight fish for some trout who were eating dry flies. Dry fly fishing never gets old! I caught a few more fish, got frustrated, and left. Overall it was an awesome day!
This video sort of shows my thought process on how I catch fish and how I fish new water, so I hope you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!

Dude, THANK YOU for including the tree “catch” and the lost fly. It is reassuring to see even someone as good as you catch the local flora once in a while! Great video!
I almost cut it out but when I was watching the clip I couldn't stop laughing so I decided to include it🤣 Glad someone enjoyed it!
@@hardmanfishingmeans a lot to those of us who don’t fish as much to see that even experts hang up from time to time. Thanks for another great video with no music. Love it!
Nothing better than wild brookies.
love your content ive been wathcing it for a while, it got me and my dad fly fishing and its now my favorite type of fishing. Thank you
That's awesome!! Glad you enjoy the videos
Never thought I'd click so fast on a Hard man video.
Idk why but I laughed WAY too hard at "Hard man" being separate 😂 Thanks for watching
Great creek, thanks for sharing.
Great vid. I HAVENT EVEN WATCHED IT YET I JUST KNOW😂
Amazing fishing man! 🔥 Such a great watch! 🎣🤘
Enjoy your videos along with your commentary. Thanks a million
Thanks a million for watching!
Awesome lesson and success. Beautiful 10 + Brookie. Thank you for this great video. The sun is about to touch the trees in the west here and time for me to go wet a hook (fly). And always tight lines, Tony Walkingstick
Thanks Tony! Good luck, hope you caught one or two!
I am getting into fly fishing, and I have learned sooooooo much from your content it isn't even funny! I love it!
Glad you're enjoying it and learning a few things!
Another awesome video well done some really nice fish
Thank you!!
Sweet Brookie 👍
Nice commentary, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed the commentary!
That big fish was over 16 for sure!
Great little native stream. That big one looked no less than 11"!
I know it was in that range! Thanks for watching
I look forward to watching your videos, I really love the scenery and there's no distracting music. Do all those woods, trails and streams have public access? Reassuring to see that even an expert like you loose the occasional fly!
Awesome content, thanks!!
Thank you!
Beautiful Brookie! Looked like it was about 12 inches and he was fat! Congrats!
Dude this gives me hope I lost a ten incher out of a stream is VA and was so sad but watching you snag the tree helped me learn everyone makes mistakes 😅
Losing a 10 inch native is TOUGH but I've lost my fair share. I usually need a moment of silence. But of course we all make mistakes! It's part of it
UPDATE: I went fishing in mossy creek VA and caught a few beautiful wild browns MY FIRST EVER! Your my inspiration so I thank you
Sick bro
Nice
I fish a stream just like it. The fish are beautiful. Congrats brother
Thanks man!
May you make a video about your gear, love your content ❤️!
I really need too, I get so many questions about it
Nooo don’t tell em bout the brook trout that the streamer 😂😂
Love your content Jon, what tripod camera are you using (the non-go pro footage). It's incredibly clear.
Panasonic Lumix G6 I believe... or something like that
I’ve watched a bunch of your posts. I can’t say that I’ve ever not watched to the very end. Thanks. BTW do you fish barbless?
Thank you!! And yes I try to have all of my flies barbless but some I have to pinch the barb on. At least for brookies. ONLY exception is like the size 20 flies because not having a barb on them is TOUGH
I'm not sure what the specis of Salmon you are catching. Did you say something about native salmon? What size do these salmon grow to?
Loved the video! I think for the title you meant, "fly fishing a small creek FOR a big fish". Not a big deal. I just thought you'd want to know. ❤
Idk I just put random words together sometimes LOL
Hey. I’m going to the NC mountains in almost a week. What dry flys would you fish for native brook trout?
Parachute Adams (size 14-18), Elk Hair Caddis (size 14-18), Stimulater (10-14), and a terrestrial like an ant or small hopper, something that floats well so you can use a dropper if they don't hit dries. You don't NEED all of these it just gives you some options
@@hardmanfishing Thankyou. I was just wondering because I see you catch em all.👍👍👍
Can you still use a nymph fly in shallow watered streams like that? Or would they get snagged on the bottom? I'm new to fly fishing I'm just trying to learn.
Good question. I would also like to know.
Yes, of course. 😊 I still use a double rig in shallow water.
You can! I'd throw a dry dropper (suspend the nymph below a bigger dry fly) so you don't get stuck!
You should come to finnish lapland
The mothman stole your fly
I knew it!!🤣
What rod and reel is that?
It’s a renegade black series combo.
At home in WV?
Where it is ?
i found a "G-loomis IMX-PRO 486-4 4wt" in a ponmd earlier today, its been there atlease a year by the looks of it maybe more, i would guess 3. the coating is destroyed, almost all gone and it has a reel that still has the made in china sticker on teh bottom of it, is it worth trying to learn how to fly fish with it.
also if someone could explain what 486-4 and 4wt mean that would be amazing
Hard man,
You get so upset when you miss a fish. Chill bro
What if I don't want to chill bro?
Can you fish whit you’re girl friend or a family member
I'm sure I can make that happen
