@@yohnnyjames It most certainly was a "big enough of a show." It was a big draw which, along with The Simpsons, helped get Fox football and become something that the WB and UPN struggled with, which was being a competitor to the other Big Three Networks.
Amanda Bearse coming out four years before Ellen and Will & Grace premiering for a long eight year consecutive run the same year her sitcom was cancelled suggests it was not due to homophobic pressure from outsiders. The logical answer was that the homophobia was at ABC and that Ellen needs to quit during Disney parts for the Disney head was managing the network at the time and who still manages it as head of Disney, Bob Iger
