  • In this video I'll be woodturning a few lace bobbins out of Bocote, Maple, and Pine. I'd never heard of a lace bobbin until SK Krafts Lunch Time Live broadcast. These are fun to make and easy for beginners or for those who just want to turn something new that doesn't take a lot of time. Each lace bobbin took about 15 to 20 minutes to turn. Don't forget to LIKE and SUBSCRIBE. Thank you for watching.

I really like bacote and the way it finishes. Always looks so rich. You did a great job with all three. Hope you enjoyed the process as much as I did.

Thanks Doug. 👍 Same here I love the way bacote looks when there is a nice wax finish. That was a fun project and yours turned out great too.

gigantic bobbins. what are they going to make with those? wool rugs? They are at least three times larger than my largest bobbin. the overall shapes are good, although they will need weights and I don't see a good place to drill for those. (bobbins are so small that they get weighted with glass beads) bobbins have to be small enough to be able to pick up a pair in the hand and do twists fast by rolling them around each other a counted number of times. anything bigger around really then a pencil is difficult to use. fat handles also make them take up even more space on a pillow. when you have a hundred pairs (they are only used in pairs) on a pillow they take up a huge amount of space, even when only as big around as a pencil. for lace bobbins think tiny. very tiny.

Dude those bobbins are way too big, my wife makes lace so I’ve made a few hundred bobbins, they are smaller than cigarettes

That's cool! I made a variety of sizes for this turn. 👍

As long as you enjoy doing it, when you start making them smaller (the cotton shaft about 1/16 “ dia) the next challenge is to make pairs of bobbins. The first few tend to snap behind the “thistle” (the round bit in front that keeps the thread from slipping off) but once you get the hang of it it is quite rewarding.
I don’t have any pictures on my phone but I’ll download some and send you the pictures.
