Her voice is unparalleled and her ability to convey emotions and the power she has to to go from deep to high notes and all those amazing vibratos, riffs, and belting is almost impossible to find in one voice. This has made her immensely talented that the King of Egypt gave her the name ‘Star of the Orient’ and later received several titles like Egypt’s First Lady. Music reaches the deepest parts of the human mind and is always synonymous with a memory which could explain why she remembers a certain event.
Interesting fact: Mohamed El Qasabgi is one of her longtime friends and composer who always used to sit and play the oud behind her. When he died in 1966, she always performed leaving his chair unoccupied behind her. You can see the empty chair behind her in this video. 🥲

An elderly friend of mine (bless his soul) introduced me to Umm Kulthum. We would listen to her music while sipping black tea and talk for hours. He would come alive and reminisce. He had a thousand stories for every song. We would laugh and sometimes cry. He would often tell me how he wished I understood Arabic because he could not find the English words to make me feel the true emotion in the poetry...I still listen to Umm Kulthum and remember my friend, Mahmoud... I miss him dearly.
I like the song & singer but that comment is just silly. It is what professional musicians do all over the world and have done so for all time. And what kind of comment is they even have cellist.
I am a singer myself and have listened to many thousands of voices from across many genres, styles and cultures. I have admired the great blues and opera singers, voices of Indians and Africans, Gypsies and throat singers, and I thought I knew what singing was. Then I heard Umm Kulthum. There is no parallel, no comparison. How can one voice carry such emotion? She can bring tears to my eyes when I don't even understand the words or the subject. Who can do this?

I was born in Belgium but my backrgound is Moroccan, when I was young I didn't like it that my parents always played her music at home (because I didnt understand it). Now, I understand what a precious lady she was and that her voice reached million hearts. This woman is one of the most respected singers that the earth has ever know.
I miss my precious Iraqi father who listened to this nearly every Saturday morning and to the smell of his delicious cooking in the morning. His smile were like a thousand hugs rolled into one when he’d just see me. Our bond was beautiful. I knew that I was his life, and he was mine. The Devil stole my destiny, my best friend, the person who was my life and soul. You are my life I miss you so and I know that Allah swt will unite us again. Omkulthum said before my eyes saw you my life has been wasted. But in my case, after my eyes saw you...with your light it’s dawn began and ended for me at 22. The dawn of my life has ended. You still visit me in my dreams many times Dad. And sometimes I walk around in my dreams searching for you in the old places we used to live together. I can still feel your warmth and the dawn shine again but only in the dream state. And I know this is a sweet mercy from Allah swt. I learnt that the Dunya is cruel and has been designed to break your heart. I want nothing out of this Dunya anymore. I walk around in it like a stranger. I have cut the chord from it a long time ago. The only thing I look forward to is meeting my father again in the afterlife. I dream about it, I long for it. When I wake up, my face and pillow is wet from the tears I weep when I get to see you in my dreams. Love is the strongest power in the world. And nothing can break the bond between the daughter and father, not even in death. May Allah swt bless and forgive everyone who has lost someone they love, or was taken away from them. The Most High tests everyone in different ways, and I have been humbled and become closer to My Lord since all these tribulations 💕 I love you Dad. That never changes, and never will. Like late Whitney Houston said, ‘it would take an eternity to break us,’ and ‘I’ll be waiting for you after the judgement day.’ Inshallah 💐
I'm an Assyrian Iraqi and have also lost my father to cancer over 10 years ago. We always used to listen to this beautiful song as well as the instrumental version. I still remember he would sing to the instrumental version and fit the lyrics perfectly. Every time I play this beautiful song I find I do the same thing and think of my dad. They're never gone as long as they're in our mind and heart. May your father ret in peace.

Back then, it was a required craftsmanship for every singer or actor on stage. Artists also had to reach the audience at the back of a theater, of course... It is said, Umm Kulthum never needed any lessons to make such a volume. Even without a microphone and singing with a full orchestra. Her voice was very powerful by nature.

I just played this in my music appreciation class in college. My classmates kept asking me when is it gonna end. This generation don't like complicated art. They want easy mainstream music so their undeveloped mind can digest it.
As someone who belongs to this generation who grew up in Berlin, Germany to a Kurdish family I agree !! I speak 6 languages (German, English, French, Turkish, Arabic and Kurdish) and the first 3s music isn‘t comparable to the 3 last as they want easy texts and simple melodies. In Turkey pop culture is mostly westernized, too. Those classics are not enough appreciated

She performed 1 cosert the last Thursday of every month . She sang two or three new songs in each consert . This went on for 40 years .The Arab world would tune in to listen to her . Her live concerts were what kept people going through what ever it was they were struggling with . She was part of their lives . In many ways she still is . After all these years not 1 entertainer can compete .My father was the one who introduced me to her music when I was 14 . He called me to the living room 'Come quick' ! When I got there he held my hand and pulled me to sit on the rug ',which is an Arab tradition, and pointed to the radio ! And I listened to UM Kalthoum singing 'Rubaiyat Alkhayam' for the first time .I had a culture shock !I had never experienced anything like it .People talk about having once in a lifetime experiences. Well ,it was nothing short of a miracle. It is a song originally written by a famous Persian Poet and then translated to Arabic and performed by UM Kalthoum . It is about a Muslim Mystic dicribing his love for GOD . I can't explain it ,but Arabic poetry combined with music and intrudced by UM Kalthoum is unparalleled . I miss my precious Iraqi father who listened to this nearly every Saturday morning and to the smell of his delicious cooking in the morning. His smile were like a thousand hugs rolled into one when he’d just see me. Our bond was beautiful. I knew that I was his life, and he was mine. The Devil stole my destiny, my best friend, the person who was my life and soul. You are my life I miss you so and I know that Allah swt will unite us again.
Omkulthum said before my eyes saw you my life has been wasted. But in my case, after my eyes saw you...with your light it’s dawn began and ended for me at 22. The dawn of my life has ended. You still visit me in my dreams many times Dad. And sometimes I walk around in my dreams searching for you in the old places we used to live together. I can still feel your warmth and the dawn shine again but only in the dream state. And I know this is a sweet mercy from Allah swt. I learnt that the Dunya is cruel and has been designed to break your heart. I want nothing out of this Dunya anymore. I walk around in it like a stranger. I have cut the chord from it a long time ago. The only thing I look forward to is meeting my father again in the afterlife. I dream about it, I long for it.
When I wake up, my face and pillow is wet from the tears I weep when I get to see you in my dreams. Love is the strongest power in the world. And nothing can break the bond between the daughter and father, not even in death. May Allah swt bless and forgive everyone who has lost someone they love, or was taken away from them. The Most High tests everyone in different ways, and I have been humbled and become closer to My Lord since all these tribulations 💕 I love you Dad. That never changes, and never will. Like late Whitney Houston said, ‘it would take an eternity to break us,’ and ‘I’ll be waiting for you after the judgement day.’ Inshallah 💐

I'm an Assyrian Iraqi and have also lost my father to cancer over 10 years ago. We always used to listen to this beautiful song as well as the instrumental version. I still remember he would sing to the instrumental version and fit the lyrics perfectly.
Every time I play this beautiful song I find I do the same thing and think of my dad.

That said, the Muslim scholars of Egypt are the real scholars equipped with authentic knowledge of the religion. The Islamic world needs the Muslim scholars of Al-azhar for example for learning the right interpretations.

I just played this in my music appreciation class in college. My classmates kept asking me when is it gonna end. This generation don't like complicated art. They want easy mainstream music so their undeveloped mind can digest it.
As someone who belongs to this generation who grew up in Berlin, Germany to a Kurdish family I agree !! I speak 6 languages (German, English, French, Turkish, Arabic and Kurdish) and the first 3s music isn‘t comparable to the 3 last as they want easy texts and simple melodies. In Turkey pop culture is mostly westernized, too. Those classics are not enough appreciated

She performed 1 cosert the last Thursday of every month . She sang two or three new songs in each consert . This went on for 40 years .The Arab world would tune in to listen to her . Her live concerts were what kept people going through what ever it was they were struggling with .

In many ways she still is . After all these years not 1 entertainer can compete .My father was the one who introduced me to her music when I was 14 . He called me to the living room 'Come quick' ! When I got there he held my hand and pulled me to sit on the rug ',which is an Arab tradition, and pointed to the radio ! And I listened to UM Kalthoum singing 'Rubaiyat Alkhayam' for the first time .I had a culture shock !I had never experienced anything like it .People talk about having once in a lifetime experiences. Well ,it was nothing short of a miracle. It is a song originally written by a famous Persian Poet and then translated to Arabic and performed by UM Kalthoum . It is about a Muslim Mystic dicribing his love for GOD .
I can't explain it ,but Arabic poetry combined with music and intrudced by UM Kalthoum is unparalleled .
