Ribs out? You're breathing wrong.

  • I see so many people with strained upper ribs, and the vast majority have dysfunctional breathing patterns. Excessive use of the accessory breathing muscles is likely staining the rib joints.
    Also, it's incredibly common for patients to mistake an elevated rib with a knot in their muscle. So if you think you have a knot that just won't go away, no matter how much massage you get and stretching you do,, you may need to be adjusted.
    As much as I like being busy in practice, the solution to this problem is not regular adjustments. Address the CAUSE of the problem!

      Joaquin Suico KAPOW Yes, breathing wrong for so long causes your ribs to stay flare out. You need to correct your breathing and do proper exercises to fix those muscles that will eventually reposition your ribs back to where they belong. One should do a complete breathe, not only from the stomach, the ribs need to expand as you inhale that includes the mid chest also moving. Breathing from the belly alone can be just as bad as shallow high chest breathing. A full breath fills from the bottom the up towards upper lungs, without raising shoulders.

      Sad Cloud Breathing wrong for so long causes your ribs to flare out. You need to correct your breathing and do proper exercises to fix those muscles that will eventually reposition your ribs back to where they belong. Go to this website I found it really helpful, posturedirect.com/flared-ribs/ or Search up how to fix a flared ribs for more. I’ve personally been working on this for a couple months and have seen a change and felt it too. I currently have one side that’s still a bit flared, but it’s on it’s way down.

      Omg mouth breathing is so bad for you! It can alter your face, I recommend that you do NOT breath through your mouth and instead through your nose. I was a mouth breather and started mewing, I noticed differences.

    Wrong. Wrong. Belly breathing is a modern myth. Yes people who are EXCLUSIVELY chest breathers, need to take a stepping stone into focussing on their belly. HOWEVER it is the RIB CAGE that needs to be expanding forward, sideways and backwards when taking a full breath. In doing so the sternum will rise and so will the belly - but the belly will expand only very slightly. Look up Dana Santas videos where she talks about RIB CAGE breathing. And more importantly look up the video of BKS Iyengar properly chastising belly breathing. In all of the ancient Yoga sutras nowhere is belly breathing mentioned. There is a video of BKS Iyengar on TH-cam demonstrating breathing where he takes an in-breath for 90 seconds - and if you pay attention to his torso when he does so, you will see that the belly isn't ballooning out throughout the inhale; it's his rib cage that expands. The man was the foremost teacher of Yoga in the world and practiced 5 hours of Yoga even when he was 90 and passed away at the ripe old age of 95. And keep in mind breathing is the most fundamental aspect of Yoga.
    So people people people, f*ck this belly breathing b.s. that's been perpetuated by the modern "experts". Learn to make space in your rib cage when you breath because that's what needs to expand when you take an inhale - NOT THE BELLY!!! If you come across anyone mentioning "breathe into your stomach" run the opposite direction as fast as your can because who knows what else they are pulling out their ass.

      It's only been two days but focusing on the side gluteus has helped me a lot already. Look up gluteus medius. It might not be your culprit but it was mine. It's weird how a muscle so far away from the ribs can affect it but I guess it has to do with the pelvic floor being neutral.

    I have like these ugly flared ribs, probably because of a bad posture. When i stand in my normal posture. My ribs stick out and my belly "sticks out" a bit. Such like my rib cage don't like to be in a constant connection with my abdominal area. (I don't now i that makes sense). It's kinda humiliating and i developed a bad social anxiety. Sorry for my bad english. Can you help me? What should i do?

    • @teenation5462

    • @chalichaligha3234
      @chalichaligha3234 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hah, I never thought I'd find someone with the same condition! My ribs have always stuck out very noticeably and have quite a pronounced back arch though I have no other skeletal issues, breath correctly, and have reasonable core strength. I don't know how bad it is for us, and have found it hard to find info on the matter (like this vid as I breath using my diaphragm) but I wouldn't worry about how it makes you look. I am not trying to trivialise your anxiety but personally, I quite like the look of my ribs, I guess as with anything like this: If you can't change it, own it. That being said I want to investigate whether it can do me harm hence me being here. If I found that my ribs will cause me future problems and I could stop them being flared, I'd genuinely be sad for the loss, they've become part of my body image. Good luck, I hope you learn to enjoy your body, unique as it is.
