  • Best Brush for Digital Painting
People often ask what brushes I use but my answer to this question might be not what you want to hear. However changing the way I use brushes has helped me a whole lot when it comes to art and productivity so I thought it's better to be honest rather than try to sell some easy tricks.

Btw this video also has subtitles that I checke myself =)

Because of my flu I just haven’t been able to record anything but yesterday I had my voice back and was able to get the audio done. I also started this video with the goal of cutting it to 5 minutes but I feel like the information at the end was too valuable to throw away so I decided to include it in. Thanks for your patience I know a lot of people have been asking for me to talk on this topic.

I really like your art and tutorials in general, but I have to say the title is misleading (at least for me). I expected to see in detail the brush you use the most; your "best brush". Seeing how you created it in the create brush menu of either PS or Procreate. You talk about just using one brush rather than many, but only briefly touch on the qualities of that brush, and don't show the brush itself, or share the brush you are using so your viewers can try it out. Thank you for sharing your art and knowledge, it is appreciated!

The qualities of a brush that is best for digital painting is what I’m talking about here. It would be easy to make this video about my brush set or telling one specific tool that accomplishes this.
I don’t think that kind of advice is honest. Art is complicated and learning to find these qualities is much more lasting knowledge than just downloading a tool that fits into this bracket. These qualities can be on a wide range of different tools and I definitely don’t want to take away that freedom from art by reducing it to a single set of parameters.

Thank you for the video Mikko, i really liked it. Just one brush or very few tools to create great art. I'm a very beginner and i appreciate this way to paint. With less tools is possible focus totally on the basic of the painting technique and not be focused on which brushes use. I'm suprised you can paint without sketching. You made a basic background and just go with colors to paint and create everything. Is this a total different workflow in confront with classic one? I mean, sketching, basic color, shade, more colors, details ecc... Is it possible only becuase of great experience and technique? Thank you.

I definitely don’t recommend doing a black and white painting and adding colours on top. :/ just my 2cents
I think it’s totally up to any artist to find a method that works for them some like to do a sketch first and that’s nice too.
I’ve noticed that these days when I use lineart I’m going back and forth between drawing and painting rather than doing it all at once.

@@angrymikko Thank you for the answer Mikko. I understand your suggestion. To me paint without sketch give the idea to save time, but to accomplish it i would like to understand if this is possible only with great experience. Because of beginner of digital painting and drawing, i feel i cannot accomplish that without sketch. I miss the fundamentals. So i was asking if is possible learn directly this workflow or is it better follow the classic one (for a beginner). With you good day :).

thanks for the informative video! I have a question! I made a default sketching brush but it becomes transparent when I reduce the size especially less than 20%. what I got wrong in settings?

    • @angrymikko
      @angrymikko  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are so many variables that go into that, so it’s hard to tell by the description alone. I can only guess that if you have set both size and opacity to the same variable then it might cause the bursh disappear at a small size. Honestly though this is just speculation as it could be a wide number of things.

    • @angrymikko

Navidad EM it just occurred to me that if you have automated tapering on then especially in a shorter brush stroke it will reduce the size of the brush. Hope that helps :)

@@angrymikko pretty much everything about brush dynamic and pencil setting is on default. I am thinking about the source shape as it is a very long rectangle. I replaced it with a circle at it looks fine

I’m totally on-board with one brush approach. I draw in procreate and always use the same pencil through out the whole process. I was always confused why do those brush packs have that many stuff. You need one tool which you can convey the message. Swapping brushes is is something where you can loose your attention and run out of steam. I don’t like to hide brush strokes either.
