      @@A3Kr0n Not in this case, not with such a big delay. In this particular case they took different paths trough separate audio and video hardware, not only in the brain. Probably they recorded the video with a photo camera and the audio from a separate mic (which of course is the best way to do it). But then somebody did a bad job at syncing both in the editing software, and then another mistake uploading to TH-cam without proper quality control.
      So all the brains were working nominally here, they were just focused in the wrong priorities. A pity because in a 10min video of somebody talking all the time the audio sync is more important than the lighting, dressing and room decoration.
      Fortunately the content is very worth it, original, precise and well documented , not an imitation as most others do on this platform. So thumbs up clicked and thank you very much.

    I just bought a Canon 90D. I've got nothing against mirrorless, well except for the price. Since I'm invested in EF & EF-S lenses, I figured it would be safe to go with what I figure is Canon's ultimate version of an APS-C DSLR. It should serve me well for years to come.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade
      @SmallSpoonBrigade 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't expect for lenses to disappear anytime soon. The dSLRs use lenses that are shared with 35mm film cameras. Most of the digital bits of a dSLR are shared with mirrorless, making a maintenance of the status quo with some improvements to the sensor technology relatively cheap.
      Mirrorless cameras have been around since almost the beginning of consumer grade digital cameras, I remember when I was looking for my first dSLR, that Sony already had their F707 which was essentially a mirrorless dZLR camera. It was effectively a Zoom Lens Reflex camera with a digital monitor replacing the mirror array that one would normally use. It was an intriguing camera because it could do things like see in near complete darkness and, IIRC, burn images to optical media.
      Personally, I had a similar camera a decade back and it wasn't a bad camera, but I just prefer the look and feel of a proper dSLR. I'm a rather large man so carrying around 20# worth of kit isn't an issue for me, but I totally get why some people would prefer to have much less stuff and mirrorless is perfectly good for most things.
      Eventually, I'll probably pick up a medium and/or large format camera with a digital back because those can do some pretty cool stuff. Landscape tends to just look better with a large format camera due to the wide angles that are possible with the lenses.

    Excellent audio synch is dead! Not just the Dentists of the world but also the Northrups. Only way I can see Nikon surviving is if 50% of their current DSLR owners switch to Z cameras and start buying Z lenses. This is unlikely to happen in the short run unless Z6/7ll cameras are reduced in price by 20%, Z8/9 are delivered at $4000 and &5000 and with R6/5 technology. Additionally an A1 and R1 equivalent must be produced by mid 2022. A DSLR buyback program would additionally be helpful. All people love sales, so give them a reason to buy. Perhaps adopt the ink printer methodology and sell cameras barely above cost in order to sell higher margin lenses.

    There's a bit to unpack here..
    If 'death' is consistent with development, then I agree that DSLRs are dead.. and have been for a while now. I feel they are as good as they can be and that there's nowhere really for them to go. I don't know how it would be possible to improve on the DSLR except perhaps in the area of sensor technology. If at some point sensors get to be much higher res without sacrificing individual pixel quality, or if they manage to get efficient edge-to-edge focus points onto the sensor, that may become a reason to reinvigorate the DSLR, but anything short of that kind of leaves the DSLR's current capability at being as good as it gets.
    On the other hand, there's a lot to still love about the DSLR - and I do. Many photographers I know are perfectly happy with them and don't feel the need to switch. They, and I, don't feel that what mirrorless offers is compelling enough to ditch what we have and build an entirely new system from scratch. I still prefer a 'live' viewfinder over an EVF, and I can always switch over to live view when I need to. I'm a stills shooter so I don't care about video, and I have big hands and long fingers, so the so-called size advantage of mirrorless doesn't figure in my equation. On the contrary, I've put battery grips on all my DSLRs to make them more comfortable to hold. Plus, in all the years I've been shooting I've never thought "Gee, I love photography, but if only I could get rid of that damn mirror!!"
    These are of course all personal preferences, and as such are very subjective, but I don't believe I'm alone in thinking this way. For me, my DSLR is very much alive and kicking, and appears that it will be for some time to come.
    Apart from all that, I enjoyed the conversation. I thought you both raised some interesting points around the industry's strategies present and future. Thank you for taking the time to put this out and I look forward to future discussions on the topic.

      I agree with you concerning the handling of most of the available mirroless. Like yourself I have tall hands and so far the best handling I encountered was with the Canon EOS R line. I didn't try the Panasonic S1 line but I guess it would be even better.
      OTOH as you underlined, this could mean to rebuild a full system from scratch which implies loads of money to cash out...
      Interestingly I used my old DSLR 2 weeks ago at the beach, and I got stunned of how the OVF experience (pentaprism) was wowing me compared to my 2 millions dots EVF in my Sony camera...If an EVF needs to be 9 millions dots to get the experience of a pentaprism OVF, then they lied saying that crafting the OFV pentaprism is more expensive than an EVF (I don't talk about dimmed pentamirror here).

    Hello folks... I am going to continue using my D3x and D300 - I love both. So far, although I was thinking about going to the Olympus system for a while, I have personally not seen a single mirror-less camera that can match the viewfinders of a good quality DSLR. Where I think both of you went wrong is with the cost. The mirror-less cameras which are comparable are hideously expensive. "Camera companies pushing the latest and greatest in our hands..." - case in point. The Olympus OM-D M1(II) would be my current compromise.

    • @Faded.Visuals
      @Faded.Visuals 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      umm I strongly disagree with that statement about mirrorless cameras are hideously expensive when compare to DLSR equivalent. For example, the Sony A7 mark 3, honestly even though It's classified as an entry level full frame camera, I will argued that it far better option in term of quality and performance over my previous Canon 5D mark 3 setup, and that was considered to be the BEST workhorse camera ever created! yea the famous canon colors are still there, but even as someone like myself who is a working wedding and portraiture photographer I genuinely thought I was overpriced for what It offered, glad I got rid of my canon DLSR setup before the price dropped significantly. Also for the EVF I don't know if you actually used any Mirrorless cameras in the last 2-3 years but they're incredible! and they only continue to get better each generation.
      If you're content with the D3X and D300 that alright, but you should realized that each passing generation cameras will continue to evolve if you like it or not.

    • @AgentPepsi1
      @AgentPepsi1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Faded.Visuals I think you have misunderstood what I meant. No one is claiming that mirrorless cameras are not "incredible", but there is a choice. I have actually used several nice ones that I had borrowed. Didn't really like any of them except the Olympus OM-D M1(II). Now if you are making the claim that neither the D3x or D300 isn't any good... hmmm I neither do weddings nor portraits (typically). I'm a hobbyist, who enjoys landscape photography (some travel photography too). The D3x is an exceptional tool for that. What I was getting at, is that not everyone will drop thousands and thousands on a body, then more magnificent glass to go along with it. It simply doesn't make sense for many people who are not professionals. For me, it is more about creativity than having the absolutely latest technology. I honestly believe, most others are in the same boat. What features exactly, for the type of photography I prefer, does a mirrorless camera have that would make it a superior choice over my D3x? I cannot really think of any compelling ones.

      The thing is, mirrorless cameras in three years will be doing things that DSLRs won't. 5 years ago mirrorless cameras struggled with AF, where mostly smaller sensors, had terrible battery life and limited lenses. Now we have Sony and Canons AF tracking and Eye AF systems, we have a huge increase in FF, far better battery and more advanced video features. Imagine what it's be like in another five, computational photography anyone? Sure, you might not care about these, but DSLRs are dead. You'll be able to buy them but lenses will slowly become more difficult to get, repairs will become more expensive and eventually impossible. In the long run it's a dead-end. I can't see lens availability being an issue for DSLR users for many decades. Not to mention the parent companies will probably keep the option to repair them. Let's not forget the height of photography around 2010 was when DSLRs were at their peak, so there's so much of that stuff around it would be silly for manufacturers to not offer repairs anymore. Sure, DSLRs are "dead" if you take a very odd definition of dead but they'll continue to be of use to people and create great images for a long, long time yet.
      Even if they are dead, so what? What mirrorless camera is going to last as long as DSLRs anyway? It's normal that products run out their time and new ones take their place - in ten years time the A1 and r5 will probably be worth $100

If they have to manufacture parts purely for repairs to cameras that they want people to replace with mirrorless. Canon might keep some support but you can't forget that these companies want you to move. In a shrinking market DSLR manufacturing is an expensive pit of money. It made sense for Nikon to keep support for 2000's film SLRs because breakable parts like mirrors were still manufactured. If Canon and Nikon move to mirrorless like Sony, DSLR users will end up like A-mount users. Unsupported. Yes, DSLRs are widely used but people owning cameras doesn't make the companies money. It is probably my fav lens of all time, but listening to Tony you'd think it was rubbish. I went digital with a Canon G1 compact in 2001. I stayed with compacts till 2006 when the affordable Nikon D50 became available and I could use all my old Nikon film lenses. But straightaway, I found the OVF to be a hindrance - no exposure preview, no black & white preview, all the focus points clustered in the centre of the frame. In 2011 I switched to Micro Four Thirds and never looked back.

    DSLR is an anachronistic construction that was an ingenious invention when we were using negatives. EVFs today are so good both in terms of resolution and refresh rate that there is no longer any good reason to use a mirror in a camera. On the contrary there are many reasons to abandon the mirror. This is just a matter of technological development and nothing else. Existing DSLRs will continue to take just as good pictures as they have done all along, but it's just not there that the technological development will happen. And therefore, over time, mirrorless cameras will not only get more and more functionalities than DSLRs, but they will also get a better image quality, and likely also will become cheaper. So why not just leave it there, and enjoy your DSLR as long as it last, and acknowledge that the future belongs to the mirrorless camera.

    Thank you both for the overview. Appreciate the insights.
    For me, conversion is an issue of value and diminishing returns.
    As with any new technology, there is a price to be paid by the consumer for bragging rights to be the first to procure it.
    IMO, that is where mirrorless technology is at the current moment.
    I am quite confident that history will repeat itself insofar that the product’s price point will drop as the technology advances.
    When that occurs, the market then stabilizes and the consumer will reap the benefit of purchasing an improved new technology at both a proper price point and with the knowledge that the new technology is here to stay.
    The cost of conversion to a new body and lenses is 20k.
    As such, I as a consumer, must ask if the quality of an entire new mirrorless system is going to produce results far beyond that of my existing dslr setup in order to justify the expenditure. At this juncture, the answer is no!
    I think I speak for a lot of users when I say that the the technology hasn’t been around long enough to instill consumer confidence nor have manufacturers created enough value for most of us to make the conversion,. When weighing the existing cost versus benefits of conversion, the scales are not tipped in favor of most consumers.

    DSLRs aren't being invested into bc ppl don't want them, they're being left behind because of simple economics:
    Every product is priced based on it's production volume and sales volume defines profit. In a shrinking market, you need to increase prices to maintain profitability, since production costs increase when lower volumes are made. Canon and Nikon used to sell high volumes of dslr bodies and lenses, and would compete against their own used lenses and bodies if they increase prices. So the easiest thing is to introduce a new option that can be priced appropriately to the new, lower volumes of production and sales - and that is why new mirrorless cameras and lenses are so much more expensive.

    As a professional musician for over 40 years, I've dealt with "planned obsolescence" in electronic gear for decades. But, "obsolete" is kind of a relative term. As long as the gear still works for you, and does what you need it to do, it's not obsolete. As an example, my all-time favorite synthesizer, an Ensoniq TS12 (made in Pennsylvania, of all places) lasted more than 27 years in my rig. When it finally went to that big bandstand in the sky, it was like losing a family member.
    I feel the same way about my cameras. Sure, mirrorless are the wave of the future, and that's perfectly fine. But as another poster mentioned, one side benefit of the new stuff is the availability of excellent used DSLRs. I've used my original EOS 300D for just about 20 years, and have added a used 7D and 20D to my bag. My 60th birthday present to myself just this past week was a used 1DX Mark III. I'm really happy with these camera and some decent glass, and I'm confident that this gear, all in great shape, will outlast me! I miss the days when my 5Diii did everything I needed (portraits) and it did it realllllly well (snappy response, intuitive feel, rugged build, batteries lasted forever, vast lens selection, resolution surpassed my needs, etc). I wanted for nothing. Then I got into making little TH-cam videos so I wanted focus tracking and a flippy screen, so I used two cameras for a year (SL2/5Diii) before trying to replace both with an EOS RP (lacked long battery life, rugged feel, snappy response, and intuitive feel) then an EOS R (slightly faster and slightly more rugged, but still not quick or intuitive- too many menu dives required). I hung on to my EF glass and considered going back to a 5D for stills then just using the R for video. When I borrowed an R5 I finally found that intuitive feeling I loved about my 5D, so I bought an R6 and have been VERY happy (traded out my EF glass for RF). This whole life story to say- I switched to mirrorless not because of what makes mirrorless different from DSLR, that was a huge non-factor, but because it was the only way I was going to get ONE camera that could do everything I want/need. Okay maybe the 6Dii could have worked well for me, and that was the plan if the R5/R6 were duds.

    Hi Tony and Chelsea. Last winter I went ice skating with my Canon 5d mk III. I fell with my camera slung around my neck. I body slammed on the ice with the camera between me and the ice. When I got up there was a big star in the ice but the cara just absolutely shrugged it off.
    That's why I have a 5D. It is absolutely built like a tank and I am not confident enough I can say the same for the latest mirrorless.

    I was a hardcore DSLR fan, but I learned to really love the evf because it gives you a more accurate reflection of exposure.

      Not only that but focus (at poor light conditions), enables focus peaking, accurate depth of field preview, allows you to properly review photos and adjust settings in situations where the LCD cannot be read... Beyond all of that, the integration with smartphone apps replacing intervalometer remotes or simple cable releases... I could spend all day here talking about the advantages, only at the cost of battery autonomy.
