      I would like you to tell more on your satellite tracking usage as so many people carry but never mention it too much. I find mine invaluable and my family have no worries about me being off the beaten track. Their piece of mind as well as my safety from any accidents the tracker has you covered ( not 100% total
      Safety ) but very close and far better than “off grid”. Being off grid is seriously stupid, unless the person who finds themselves injured is happy not to be rescued and happy to possibly die from their injuries. Off gridders also put rescue teams at risk looking for them.

      Hi guys I think carrying a defence spray by both party's is important, its a none lethal way to get a possibly very dangerous situation under control to at least let you hurriedly pack and run you can leave the person with a bottle of water, but now they will not be so keen to attack again.

    Amazing video as usual. Thanks for sharing all those info.
    A suggestion to treat ticks. One of the safest way to remove a tick is pretty simple and effective: use a small amount of cotton, a cotton wad or so. Put on it a drop of liquid soap or rub the cotton on dump solid soap. Then rub softly with a circle movement on the tick. It will "lose contact" with the skin without the risk of break it or killing it which to avoid when into the skin. I live in the Alps and unfortunately ticks are very common here. Frequent inspection is mandatory when travelling into the wild as you perfectly mentioned.

  • @bobgong7832
    @bobgong7832 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    All of your advice and suggestions are spot on and speak volumes of your real experiences around the world. Strongly agree with your comments regarding what others may warn you about traveling in other countries/places. Only if the person telling you how "terrible and dangerous" a country is, has actually traveled there themselves, will I really heed their advice. Most of the time it is hearsay passed along or rumors. I truly appreciate people sharing "info", showing kindness and concern about my safety, but always consider the source of information and how it is supported. Keep doing the wonderful things you and Eric do! 👍👍🙂🙂

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  ปีที่แล้ว

      A great way of putting it, information is often passed along from person to person.. Like you said, it's good to appreciate the concern but at the same time consider the source by looking at the way the news is transfered through body language, choice of words etc...

    There are so many places here in the Netherlands I did not yet see, I can go on with my bicycle tours here 'in my own country' for many years. Of course things can happen anywhere. The weather can be a problem sometimes, especially because it's unpredictable. And just don't do 'wild camping'! As a member of NTKC and Natuurkampeerterreinen I can camp in wonderful natural sites throughout the country, legally and with bathroom facilities.

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, the Netherlands is a fantastic country for bicycle touring and our legal 'nature campings' are fantastic places to camp while still having the feeling of wild camping 🌲

    I enjoy your channel and appreciate your tips. I think I might do a bike tour one day, but would only camp in authorized areas such as national parks (where it is permitted), campgrounds and other areas where permission is granted. I think stealth camping in or near inhabited places or along roadways is not for beginners and generally not advisable outside your own country where you don't know what is private and public land, or whether the area is safe. For me it is just not worth the risk, and also because I do not want to be seen by the local population as an intruder. That being said, I did enjoy your many videos of you accepting invitations to camp in people's back yard and then showing them in your videos. I think this is a very important cultural exchange that contributes greatly to your content.

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the interesting additions, great points. Yes finding good stealthcamping locations is a skill and something you get better at when you do it more often... We try to avoid private or agricultural land but when we have no other option and get discovered, we ask & explain the situation which people appreciate and often they will then let you stay. Still, we don't like someone knowing about it so we try to avoid camping in densely populated area's and we might also choose to pay for a camping or another legal place to stay at.

    WoW that was well organized and informative video. You said a whole book full of information in 27 minutes. You hit the nail square on the head. One bit of clothing advice to those wanting to have a nomadic adventure of biking, hiking, canoeing as well as motorized is wear wool. Wool is a natural fiber from a mammal and has a thermal range of about 15 F degrees (9.4 C) They keep cool on a hot day and warm on a cold day. Wool retains 80% of its thermal insulation value even when wet. Synthetic fabrics have no range.

      Thanks Tom! Good onr, you're right! I didn't touch on it because I really don't like it, even a mix is to prickly for me 😋 But it's definitely good for regulating body temperature and even the prevention of smell...

    • @Longtack55
      @Longtack55 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wool doesn't cool you on a hot day if you're cycling. Wear a loose cotton shirt and the sweat will evaporate before wicking and evaporation as wool does. That worked in Pakistan.

    Hello Maudi,
    I really liked this video. Why. Often the atmosphere on TH-cam bike travel videos is a bit heavily focused on the beautiful, easy. Kind of consumption.
    This video is different. It's more serious and very private. That moved me, thank you. And it also shows other aspects of such a journey. (I myself only know cycling tours in Europe). It was very nice to see what's going through your mind and what's happening outside of the beautiful landscapes.
    Thank you very much for your openness. There may be more serious issues more often. Greetings Bernhard

      Thanks Bernhard, yes I can imagine it gives a bit of an insight into our way of thinking about and approaching certain situations. Luckily 99% of the time the experiences are positive, it's just good to be aware 😊

    I really liked your way of talking about potential risks coming from humans - rather than a black and white perspective, different things can be true at the same time and you made that very clear. also had the experience that people warn me about the neighbouring countries (or minorities in their own..) with very serious faces without ever having been there, mostly when these countries were at war with each other at some point. mostly this seems to be based on negative portrayals in tabloid media or by conservative and right wing politicians rather than personal experience..
    about the dogs: in romania, i was given the advice to neither stop nor try to escape the street dogs, but rather keep a steady pace thats a bit faster than walking. for me it worked well, because i didnt panick as much and the dogs seemed to get less activated than when i tried to go really fast.

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good one about the dogs, I'll try that out the next time!
      Glad you appreciate the nuance. Yes often the stories come from past events, sensationalised media, and just a general fear of 'the others'...

  • @commoneuropeanstarling
    @commoneuropeanstarling ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thank you for this! Sensible stuff, especially as many watch TH-cam videos and think I can do this, too. While no TH-camr says "don't try this at home" "nor don't do it at all", it's important that people know their limits.

    That was hugely interesting and useful. I would like to hear about more techniques for dealing with aggressive dogs though. I met a really big one on my cycle today that nearly knocked me off the bike. I was going uphill so I couldn't 'outrun' him and I can very close to getting bitten, I think.

    • @ragbag46
      @ragbag46 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I only cycle locally in Thailand where dog ownership is very fluid, basically they stay with whoever feeds them, but many just roam. The ones that stay in one location are the worse as they like to defend their territory. I carry a small ex washing up bottle in a cup on my handle bars filled with white vinegar. I find it very successful, even if attacked by a pack, I cycle towards the leader and try and hit him on the head or eyes even the body is ok, they are usually surprised and back off, also one good thing they remember me. The vinegar is very cheap and lasts for ages, but I must admit if they catch me going up a hill it is difficult, I have had some close calls but so far it has worked.

    • @WheelstoWander
      @WheelstoWander  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We've heard of people carrying sticks in places with a lot of dogs, spraying with a water bottle might help, we heard of people using air horns, high tone dog whistles, dazers... Eric often tries to 'outrun' them or even cycles straighly at them, it sometimes works ...

    • @ragbag46
      @ragbag46 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sticks work well but how do you manage on a bike when peddling along. Even in our small Thai village I often see elderly villagers walking along with a stick, not a walking stick, just by raising your arm in a threatening manner is sufficient to make a dog back off, they understand a stick hurts, I suspect they grew up as puppies getting a whack on the backside now and again if getting out of line.

    On the upside of travel as a pair then I would hope two people going off a cliff and getting seriously injured and unable to get help is very small. For lone travel though Get a satellite tracker. Either way having a tracker the second it’s needed is a bonus, not having one it soon realises that there is a serious danger of a becoming a statistic. However small that is.
