Model 10 S&W was issued until The NYPD went to the Stainless Revolvers, officers had a choice using the S&W 64 or Ruger SPNY, both were Double Action Only in .38 Special using Winchester 158 grain +P Semi Wadcutter. Sadly the revolvers are gone from service the NYPD allowed officers to keep their revolver for duty use if they didn’t want the Semi Automatic pistols. Those officers who carried revolvers are now all retired.

The "Billy" beer was a very nice touch that only us older guys will recognize. President Jimmy Carter's, seemingly, hapless older brother, Billy, became a laughing stock and a brand of beer was offered to capitalize on his notoriety. Back then, late 1970s, stainless steel was "NEW" and not everyone trusted it. Smith and Wesson was among the first to develop pistols, revolvers and semi-autos, in stainless steel if I am not mistaken. Rumors, as I recall, indicated stainless pistols were prone to cracking were, of course, not true. On the other hand, police and security officers who work outdoors and in all kinds of weather knew that blue steel pistols were very prone to rust and discovered the stainless pistols impervious to weather. To designate the model made of stainless steel, Smith would apply a model number with a "6." Thus, Military & Police, model 10, in stainless became the #64 like this example. The model 36 Chief's Special became the model 60. The model 19, Combat Magnum, when built in stainless steel became the model 66. The L frame revolvers were developed in the very early 1980s and were planned and offered in both blue and stainless and were the first pistols from Smith developed in that fashion. Thus, the 586 and 686 revolvers were offered and this illustrated illustrated that Smith was committed to stainless steel. As I recall, Ruger was also so committed but Colt and other brands were not committed until a number of years later. In the 1980s semi-auto pistols were offered in stainless and Smith also designated them with three digit model desingnations where the 39 & 59 became the 639 and 659. It was about that same time, after 1986, ever expanding desire for more powerful semi-auto pistols brought about the development of new calibers, like 10mm and 40 Smith & Wesson, which required Smith to develop four number disgnations for their semi-auto pistols which were now offered in a number of new variations. Thus, Smith pistols were now designated with four digit codes which included with a 6 for stainless and 4 for blue or nickle plated steel and aluminum frames, for example, 3904, 6906, and 4506. In conclusion, between 1979 until 1989, just ten years, the pistol market was utterly revolutionized. There were, then, a very wide assortment of calibers and finishes never seen before....and then came Glock.
What got to me is that he actually opened and drank the Billy Beer. I commend his dedication to the video, but he also could have sold that one can for a small fortune on the antique market!

My dad killed a drug addict who broke into his house when my mom was pregnant with my sister, luckily no neighbor called the police, we assume that he died because he was shot 2 times directly to the chest but since he was so drugged that he got up and ran straight to the hill that was a few meters from the house, we assume that he bled to death and was eaten by coyotes
Excellent short video; a proper tribute to the 70s, start to finish. That was the exact model revolver carried by the Toledo Police Department back when I was in high school/college in the late 70s/early 80s, if memory serves me (I grew up in the small city of Perrysburg just southwest of Toledo). That’s a very nice revolver, for sure. And yes, Billy Beer sucked even back then, let alone after 40+ years of sitting in that can.
I remember IN our Sherrifs Academy in 1992 we used Colt Python 357 mags. After college and Academy we switched to Smith and Wesson 4506 Autos. Great weapons and caliber.
The percussion caps are recessed. Also, I think they tested this on Mythbusters and it was especially difficult to ignite the caps without a direct and powerful strike.
My first ever handgun I purchased at the age of 21. I still kick myself in the ass for selling it all those years ago ! It was truly a work of art. Reliable as all hell, and took +p+ rounds with no problem. This, and my .357 Sig were my all time favorite carrying arms. I put down a black bear with one shot of fmj .357 sig to the chest. That bear dropped not even 4 ft from where I hit ‘em and he fell over dead as a doorknob. Upon further inspection it ripped through its heart, lungs and a major pulmonary and cardiovascular arteries all the way through and the round was found smashed in under his pelt.
