Fun fact: Heihachi got sent back in time while he was bathing in a hot spring at a mountain resort. So, you could say it was the original Hot Tub Time Machine.
Wow, and here I was thinking I was the only one that did that. Ever since mario kart way back and the ginger seeking chompers, I have always rooted for him.
Hey Zaibatsu, Thank you so much for helping me keep going through my depression. This may have been an unintentional thing, helping someone get through that, but watching you guys late at night yell at each other and laugh helps me somehow. Thank you, I've been watching since season 1. You guys are the best! If I had enough money I would send you stuff. But I don't so I won't. I hope you get this. Just so you know your channel actually has a big positive impact on people's lives!
Ironic that Pat loves Lizardman so much in SC5 when he became a clone of Kratos from Broken Destiny. Despite what they might believe iirc Soul Calibur 2 is considered to be the strongest game fighting wise out of the 6 games. Soul Calibur 4 was met with "meh" appeal but mostly because its the slowest of the 6 games, Darth Vader was actually pretty good while Yoda and Apprentice were meh. Soul Calibur 5 was also met with mixed reactions because the replacement of many series' veterans and the story being crap. The changes with meter, supers and Just Guard also slightly made the game harder to play and turned some people off from it. Ironically while Tekken is becoming simpler, Soul Calibur 5 got more complicated than 4 with more and more mechanics. Nightmare and Siegfried were split because both of the characters were popular since they're the same person in Soul Calibur II. Conversely to what they say about Nightmare "not being the same" it's not so much that Nightmare lost moves its that his moveset is an entirely new character. Nightmare in Soul Calibur II is actually more like 70% Siegfried, 30% Nightmare in terms of moveset. As the games went on, the style that the 2BF are probably used to just became Siegfried's style while Nightmare got an entirely new, (somewhat similar) but new moveset.
@@MerlosTheMad It was never explained as far as I know, but an educated guess would be that Sony saw the insane amount of copies sold on Gamecube and Xbox for SC2 (The GC version actually outsold the PS2 version and was vastly superior) and decided they wanted the whole pie instead of a third of it. I doubt it was namco's decision, as the PS2 hardware was the shittiest to work on. The joke's on them, they landed an exclusive for the second worst entry in the whole series.
The story mode of SCV is a prime example of why people should care about fighting game story modes. Not because it's good, but because it's so terrible that I never want to play a single player story mode in a fighter again until someone assures me 'It's not as Bad as SCV's story.' Between the Incest, the lack of any form of cognitive thought from any character, the fact the story basically tells characters who aren't Pat and Pyyra to fuck off despite everyone being better characters, the Heel turns, the fucking TIME TRAVEL TO UNDO SOMETHING THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IN THE FIRST PLACE and the fact Soul Caliber is also evil now too. There is not a single thing about the story mode that isn't complete gutter trash bad. I could write a thesis paper on how the story mode of SCV should be an example how not to write period.
Vfanatic1 And to twist the knife even further, the story you saw was only 1/4 of the original plans for story mode, but the game was short on time and it had to be released lickety-split. Fans were expecting the DLC to further continue to expand the story, but it never came.
If you guys are interested to know about some of your questions about the Soul franchise, I can help. I've got little Lizardman as my avatar after all. SC V's final boss is Elysium, the Sophitia look-alike that's Soul Calibur's physical form (like Inferno for Soul Edge). The SC IV boss you guys were talking about is Algol, the man who created Soul Edge and Soul Calibur. He's unlockable in V. Lizardman was a man named Aeon Calcos who was chosen by Hephaestus to defeat Soul Edge like Sophitia, but was caught by the cult that made Astaroth, and turned into a lizard monster. There are more Lizardmen (which were playable in II), but the pack leader is Aeon. His original moveset is a copy of Sophitia's while many of his SC V moves are ripped from Kratos in the PSP game, SC Broken Destiny (which explains the wings). Movesets that are not in SC V are Talim, Zasalamel, and Yunseong. Setsuka's moveset returns as Alpha Patroklos, which is explained by him training under her before taking up the sword and shield. The "monk" guy you were talking about is the nunchaku user Li Long. For the longest time he was presumed dead after fighting Cervantes, but survived and returned in SC III as an extra character. He has a couple of connections with other characters, falling in love and having a child with Chie (daughter of the previous leader of Taki's clan), training Maxi for some time, and hunting down Mitsurugi for killing Chie (which turned out to be false). His sister is also Xianghua's friend. Arthur was made for SC I because samurai imagery was banned in certain countries like Korea. This was also the reason for the creation of Hwang (Yunseong's idol and Mina's not love interest) in SE. They both reappeared in SC III as a extra characters.
A lot of that info is in the wiki too. I really wished that a lot of stuff that happened to the characters in IV was explained in V, but you had to look in the wiki for it. That's what happens when a game is rushed.
MinibusYT Cyhanid (Sarah), Curtis, TealDragon (Chloe), and myself all watch them. We're actually considering doing some lets plays soon on a new channel.
Imagine, if you will, Punished Snake as a Soul Calibur 6 crossover character. His prosthetic is his weapon, changing colours with each replacement and when he has the Soul Edge or Soul Calibur, the little shrapnel stuck in his forehead is a shard of said weapon. His joke weapon could even be the little cap arm he had in the hospital with the two prongs.
Hi, I'm from the future. There's only one character in DLC 2 left unannounced, as far as I remember, and it probably isn't a guest character. No Snake of any kind is in the game, unfortunately. However, B2, Geralt, and some guy from Samurai Showdown aren't bad picks.
I think he only said 5 plays better/smoother than 2, which is a hard call to make considering how many years are between the two, but I can see some reason to his argument, As for the rest...yeah, he pretty much lost all his cred.
YO MATT The reason Medieval Spawn wasn't in the game is because that character (and Angela) were tied up in a long standing legal dispute between Todd MacFarlane and Neil Gaiman that was only recently ended.
I'd say the absolute WORST problem for ppl trying to get into fighting games is the ass kicking you have to receive before you start to actually get decent. Like they said your going to be losing A LOT and that discourages ppl from playing after you lose 5 straight games in a row or more. Takes quite a bit of commitment and persistence to play these games. I like to play them amongst my friends and we have a good time taking shots after we lose but I never go online.
Losing is not the problem, you can't expect to do well until you put in the time to practice against other real people. You lose, then pick yourself up, learn from it, and use that loss to improve your game. The worst problem for people is commitment, in order to be high level good, you need to understand frame data (your advantages and disadvantages), the match ups of your main and the mix ups/option selects at your disposal. That my friend takes allot of time and effort.
1shoryuken I dunno, plenty of people I try to teach fighting games to just immediately give up after losing once. Like, I don't know what they're expecting - beating someone with more experience on your first try? that's not going to happen. But a lot of people don't seem to take well to that. I think these are just people who expect instant gratification from games and who would be better off playing something on single player...
L. Modesto There's a word for people like that: casuals. My sister would always get really pissed off at me when I killed her in smash bros, even though it's more of a party game than a fighting game and I was just playing for fun. If she didn't get her revenge within the next match, she'd rage quit the game. Learning to not get angry, or at least not get angry at the smaller things in video games is a skill everyone should pick up.
L. Modesto My question is are you REALLY teaching them? I ask this because most of the time the people teaching their friends just rape the shit out of them and expect them to learn from anything. People aren't gonna learn how to play a fighter if they get the shit kicked out of them before they can push a button. My advice to folks is mess around in the training mode first. If there is a tutorial use that first.
+animeasskicker This is a very valid point. Like anything it definitely starts with the basics and you build up from there. I once taught a friend of mine how to play soul calibur II. His little brother used to come over with the game on his game cube and wallop him constantly so we booted it up on my xbox and spent the better part of two afternoons exploring my friend's chosen character's move set (yoshimitsu), picking some nice options for different situations, drilling them till he had them down pat, teaching him about guarding, frame advantage, how the two related, teaching him about stuns, ground games, throwing, basic placement, which moves were safe and which weren't and some simple frame traps and a couple basic combos. We also drilled him against his brother's character and he would point out the most common moves his brother would use, I would show him how to counter (guard impact, ducking ect) and then throw them out at random till he could recognize them coming out. When we were through he wasn't a pro or anything, but I was as proud of him as I would have been my own son when he told me that he beat his little brother for two straight hours before his brother went into a rage, slammed the controller on the ground, took the game out of the console and stormed home demanding to know "how he was doing this all of a sudden" over and over. That wouldn't have happened if I was just beating him up for two days.
1:07:04 Thanks Pat for putting down Iron Tager, favorite Blazblue character...the one I put hours and hours and hours into, thanks man, thanks... that's uh real cool of you...
Sort of an Arkham City/Prototype cross, with some of the stealth elements of the former and the gruesome evisceration of the latter. With Spawn being Spawn, you could probably add enough extra mechanics to make it its own game.
phoenixsplash135 For me playing footsies is when your playing against a person who always blocks high so you repeatedly kick them low to bait them into blocking low so you can medium hit them into a combo.
***** It gets such a shit rep online because apparently it's completely broken at tournament level and everyone loves to parrot the like 2000 people worldwide who are actually capable of breaking it but yeah for actual human beings it's up there.
It's fun going from "wow, you guys seem to be pretty good at fighting games, even if you haven't played in a while" and then watching you duke it out in a game I actually know a lot about. The illusion has been shattered. Loving this series so far, guys. Keep it coming.
"What cool character's were you missing here?" ALL of them, Pat, all of them; the replacement cast sucked, and they didn't even include a replacement for Talim or Zasalamel. Check out Kratos from Broken Destiny and the Aeon moveset will seem familiar, and might explain the feathers.
No it didnt . As much as i did try to look at it as new. Soul Calibur 5 is just a new game to me. It's Good don't get me wrong but Soul Calibur 2 had better movesets and faster movements, even a better counter system. Felt more fun playing it when Guard impacting was more of easier to have good counters rather than leveling up just to do it once. Not to mention the fact, it ripped off The Street Fighter 4 ultra combo set, which i found to be dumb. Soul Calibur 5 is decent at best.
Wait... at 25:05 did I hear Soul Calibur III was so dissapointing? I would really like to hear the reasoning there, unless I heard incorrectly, I played II a lot but as soon as I played III it became my favorite.
I think it was because some characters came in only in the console version so they were not balanced at all. And they said its because of how dumb the story reaction commands are.
+Gigamokin There were also a lot of horrible, horrible glitches in that game, from glitches that would corrupt your save game to game play glitches like the "grab glitch". There was some big game-breaking bug that completely mutated competitive play... but because I avoided that game like the plague I can't recall it. All in all it's probably one of the buggiest releases in the history of the series.
I just wanted to say, you guys are great! After listing to you guys be super salty and so fort (for however long it's been) Has gotten me back into fighting games. I wish I'd never left, because oh boy am I bad, but like senpai Liam would say "Get good"
Story was the worst... Started like "What the heck?" Ended like... "Never doing this again..." Algol is my only reason for owning this game... Algol, Siegfried and Ivy.
Would love to see you guys play with your subs on some of the games sometime, but still hearing and seeing you guys play is plenty. Thanks for showing Soul Calibur some love.
I'm so angry at SCV not because of how awful the story was (that's another completely different subject that I won't discuss), but because one of my most favorite characters - Stesuka - got cut off and stupid Patroklos got her style. Also, same for Zasalamel, so disappointed that he got completely cut off from the game, he was awesome, Setsuka as well.
You lot brought a big smile to my face when you mentioned coming up across good Maxi and Eddy Gordo players. Theyre both my best characters with the exception of Ivy and Mitsurugi.
Man in retrospect, Guilty Gear as an anime would just be a D-tier shitty OVA with a Gary Stu OC who's a scientist, badass, time traveler, with a daughter who's a loli in mind but has tits for day-oh wait, that's exactly what it is. I fucking love it though. Both it and Blazblue just have fun with the "edgy" side of anime of their respective era (80s/early 90s and late 90s/00s). But I don't get the hate over Blazblue's characters still. Ragna only plays like a bit like Sol, and the hilarious thing is besides being heavily traumatized, he's the normal one of the cast where he's so sick of every fucking stupid plot twist yet he's the one who has to go through it. .....Dozens of times even....
YES. Soul Calibur 2 was not only one of my first fighting games ever, it was easily my favourite. Unlike Street Fighter I found the controls and commands to be A LOT less complicated, as well as making sense (Had the PS2 version so square was horizontal attacks and triangle was vertical which, is SUPER simple to remember). Not to mention that, I guess I just like Soul Calibur's aesthetic and graphics more. I know you guys really, really like Street Fighter but, honestly it doesn't get my attention as much as Soul Calibur related stuff does. Also on the topic of Zasalamel, apparently he was supposed to come back BUT, due to time issues and stuff (or that tsunami that hit Japan awhile back) he was cut even though his SC4 model is still in the game. His weapon is even on Algol's stage in SC5 and all that. Anyway awesome video, REALLY hope we see more Soul Calibur stuff later on.
Xthechosen21XX I've played through the third game recently. Yeah I still hate Carl. Not cool at all. He tries to start shit and then gets his ass beat or looks like a jackass after winning.
I think the main reason I like Relius so much more is because he literally, and I mean LITERALLY plays like a Jojo character. Also, Relius is Char. That is all. So Carl's still a shit in CP?
Xthechosen21XX Pretty much. A large amount of the cast has actually become important in the main story now. But Carl so far is completely irrelevant (Apart from his sister)
Needs to be said, I love the Fisticuffs intro. It's cool but casual, the guys inviting us over to hang out and play fighting games for an evening. Fuckin rad.
Okay people in the comments, really dumb question but I need an answer since there's no link in the description or on the Best Friends Wiki. How do I send the Best Friends my fighting game questions for the next Friday Night Fisticuffs? Thanks in advance.

What is the consensus on Soul Calibur 3 the ps2 exclusive
It instroduced the world to Create-A-Fighter and that's kind of all it accomplished.

You're not alone. That one was my favorite SC that I've played so far.
I really want SC 2 and 3 to be officially ported to the PC, like how SC 6 is on Steam. Emulators take a lot of fiddling, and have a few issues.
This intro is so awesome!
You're the best, Pat. Seong Mina for life.
Broomstick Seong Mina sweeping scrubs off the floor. Ah,the memories.
1:07:04 Thanks Pat for putting down Iron Tager, favorite Blazblue character...the one I put hours and hours and hours into, thanks man, thanks... that's uh real cool of you...
I think Pat needs healthy dose of science.
Cosmosis Jones THE POWER OF SCIENCE!!!
Spawn games never did justice to him. I want someone to put him in a fighting game where he is actually good and not stupid looking.
How about a Spawn sandbox?
TheLilbigBlack Just a nice mod for Arkham City
Sort of an Arkham City/Prototype cross, with some of the stealth elements of the former and the gruesome evisceration of the latter. With Spawn being Spawn, you could probably add enough extra mechanics to make it its own game.
Well I'm from the Future and yeah your in Luck Mortal Kombat 11 will give Spawn justice
Way to still not explain what footsies are Woolie!
It's basically staying out of someones range, and trying bait them into coming in and making a mistake.
phoenixsplash135
Pretty much like lions, according to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure(?)
phoenixsplash135 For me playing footsies is when your playing against a person who always blocks high so you repeatedly kick them low to bait them into blocking low so you can medium hit them into a combo.
It's basically boring your opponent into making a mistake.
It's pretty much when you and your opponent are being lame, taking turns hitting and blocking each others attacks until one gets through! XP
Jesus the FNF intro sounds so mid 90's. I love it.
*****
It gets such a shit rep online because apparently it's completely broken at tournament level and everyone loves to parrot the like 2000 people worldwide who are actually capable of breaking it but yeah for actual human beings it's up there.
Thanks for this episode best friends, I learned a lot about fighting games, and even more about friendship
"Girls are hot, but thry look even hotter if they look like Vergil."
Can't decide if you're right or if there's something wrong with you.
Matt seems upset about SCV.
Maybe because he's bad at it?
Iamleper The best thing that came from SC5 is Hatsy.
Iamleper Nah, he's just salty.
huehuehuehuehuehue
He did state he hates the newly introduced characters and the game's story mode, which is all pretty fair.
Yeah, I don't like SCV, because of the problems I have with it's roster and story mode. Something many, many people in the comments agree with.
TheSw1tcher Just to clear the air, it WAS a joke. Do not think I am some asshat like a short ginger.
I hope its 100 percent accepted that 2 is the best of the Soul Calibur series.
And it has the hypest intro ever
The Woolie Hole still burns.
I love the intro for these videos so much, truly captures the laidback feeling of a friday night after a working week.
Starkiller was overpowered as shit. Particularly if you played with ringouts - almost every move he had could lead to ringout.
Heihachi's ultimate weapon was, no joke, taking off the gloves. Heihachi is such an OG that wearing huge steel gauntlets just softened his blows.
He's a FF Monk character.
And now you guys played my favorite franchise of fighting-games. I can seriously drop dead and be happy.
Wouldn't Chosen Undead from Dark Souls make such an amazing guest fighter for this series?
I’m not the best Dark souls player, but I totally agree dude
Until their stamina runs out.
This video is a PERFECT example of how people let Nostalgia ruler over their better judgement.....
Nostalgia? Never heard of that Pokemon.
TonyBMan we know Gen1ers sure haven't
But Soul Calibur 2 is still better than 5 though in terms of everything (obviously except graphics) even without the nostalgia excuse.
Anakin James Soul Calibur 5 took everything good about 2 and made it better...
"I was just about to explain footsies"
Proceeds to not explain footsies. Woolie the Liar strikes again.
Woolie didn't explain what "footsies" are like he promised
Guess I shouldn't be surprised, really
I just wanted to say, you guys are great! After listing to you guys be super salty and so fort (for however long it's been) Has gotten me back into fighting games. I wish I'd never left, because oh boy am I bad, but like senpai Liam would say "Get good"
The reason why in SC:IV that lightsabers are weak is because they were set to stun.
So, they function like Raiden's blade?
I cant believe they didn't utilize the best feature in 5, double tap a direction to do a dodge that renders all vertical attack spammers obsolete.
RIP Raphael
Talim is awesome, Evil Zone is underrated and SCV disappointed on every level but the gameplay.
Story was the worst... Started like "What the heck?" Ended like... "Never doing this again..." Algol is my only reason for owning this game... Algol, Siegfried and Ivy.
IKR, Patrokolos and Pyrra were terrible protagonists.
Any game where I can put Ivy Waifu-tine in a nurse outfit is a 10/10 for me
Talk about a coincidence, I've been playing Soul Calibur all week. Seeing this made the week better
Thank you so much for calling Maxi, Maxi-pad. I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thought that.
AAAAH THAT INTRO
tfw you'll never play friday night fisticuffs with the bestest of friends ;_;
so the wolf's name is "one", and the characters name is "two" I don't know Woolie kinda lame.
And if you look very closely. SC2's Xianghua and Steven Universe's Pearl, are basically the same.
Another great FNF. This is a great series. Keep it coming. You guys are the best!
Would love to see you guys play with your subs on some of the games sometime, but still hearing and seeing you guys play is plenty. Thanks for showing Soul Calibur some love.
36:55 YOU FUCKED UP! YOU FUCKED UP!
Yoshimitsu best character.
You dissapoint me guys.
I guess they haven't unlocked Yoshimitsu
I'm so angry at SCV not because of how awful the story was (that's another completely different subject that I won't discuss), but because one of my most favorite characters - Stesuka - got cut off and stupid Patroklos got her style.
Also, same for Zasalamel, so disappointed that he got completely cut off from the game, he was awesome, Setsuka as well.
Enjoyed watching these guys. We just did Capcom vs SNK 2, you guys should do that next!
You lot brought a big smile to my face when you mentioned coming up across good Maxi and Eddy Gordo players. Theyre both my best characters with the exception of Ivy and Mitsurugi.
Voldo is totally Goldust's ancestor!!!
THE GIRL WITH THE RING BLADE.
THE GURRRRRL WITH THE RRING BLARRRRRRDERRR.
Raiden The Jack Greek Man Yuri Lowenthal will never remember who she is.
It's really weird just how well Ezio fits into the Soul Caliber cast.
i love this series and the game. that intro for Friday night is hype
We need a comprehensive list of Liam's waifus.
NOTHING. And I mean NOTHING-- will beat last Friday's Friday Night Fisticuffs.
Mahvel? Or maybe some SKULLGURRRRRLLLS! :D
Rychu Otaku But that hasn't been made yet. If it were made, THEN *THAT* WOULD BE THE HYPEST SHIT EVER.
But, you know... it hasn't been made yet.
machinimamarlon I wanna see JOJO
deathscythe122887 No. JoJo is poopy.
still giggling like a goddamn school girl at these fnf intros
Thanks for continuing to do this series. Good Fridays are good.
that intro always makes me feel like woolie is inviting me into his home, its weird but in a good way
Laurtrec from DS would be rad in the next SC game.
ooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my god that opening is my goddamed wet dream. i just wanna play fight games with you!!!
No, Senpai will notice me first!
are you the with the arcade stick signed by matt and woolie!!?? i didnt think so.
also, I know thats totally unbelievable but whether or not you believe me doesn't matter I still have the satisfaction of the truth.
GOD DAMN IT. NO, ZAIBATSU SENPAI! NOTICE ME, PLEASE!
HAHA! I TASTE YOUR SALTY TEARS!! if you want them to notice you come to magfest. That's where they noticed me
Hey guys play Tekken Tag tournament 2 tho.
Zwei and his dumb stand are really cool, Woolie. Don't worry, I agree with you.
Carl Clover is quite an interesting character but the polar opposite of cool. I hated his story mode in both Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift.
I completely agree with you. He is my least favorite character in the entire series. Relius is MUCH cooler in my opinion.
Well it's good that ArcSys is keeping the trend of Carl being worthless. Damn Shotas...
They should do n episode, where they all try and complete weapons master on soul calibur 2!
Ivy's alt looks like Manfred Von Karma.
"I'm just gonna take casca" THANK YOU MATT FOR REALIZING. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE.
Natsu and Taki are my favorites. They're fucking devastating when you know how to use them and don't just spam X.
dat up+BK though.
A => B => 4+(B+K) => 41236 + B
It's amazing how many people don't air-roll and eat the unblockable at full damage.
Definitely! I love them more then Seigfreid!
I am beyond butt mad they are not playing the NGC version and I am infinitely butt mad there is no Wii U version THANKS NAMCO!
Seriously, they couldn't put SC2 HD version on the WiiU with Link in it?
***** The best version and best selling!
Intro video for this is my favorite by far! Good job you guys!
This brings back memories, this was my favourite fighting game as a kid
