It’s great that more bike lanes are being added in Oahu, but I think the only way to address this problem is if the residents start to lessen their dependency when it comes to cars and more on bicycles to increase the awareness of leaving bike lanes free from pedestrians.
I ride up Diamond Head Road all the time and yes as a biker, automobile driver and walker, I see it all the time. One time as I was going up DH Road, there were 4 people walking side by side, down DH Road with a stroller spilling onto the road. So I go into the empty sidewalk. Further up I encounter a couple and the guy gives states me down. There is a curb now so I can’t go back to the bike path. Sidewalk has a lot of space, but I look like the bad guy.
I see a lot of vindictive hate for bikers, but bikers are getting hurt and killed even though they are riding legally. When I ride, I stay off the streets and ride in protected bike lanes as much as possible, even though it’s a longer route.
Pedestrians on roadways (§291C-76) - Where there are sidewalks, it is unlawful to walk on the adjacent roadway, bicycle path, or bicycle lane. When there are no sidewalks, pedestrians are to walk on the left side of the roadway or its shoulder facing traffic approaching from the opposite direction.
Most of time we run on the road is because A) the sidewalk isn’t wide enough B) the walkers take up the whole thing even when it is super wide. C) no sidewalk at all.
I'll never understand why pedestrians are in the bike roadway when there is a wide sidewalk 3 feet away. However, some places have tiny bike lanes, and no sidewalk, such as metcalf. This is especially problematic for both pedestrians and cyclists. Some of these bike lanes are unsafe for bikes, let alone a line of pedestrians running in a blind spot. Even funnier is the foolish comments about bikers complaining, when it is drivers that are the ones bringing this up.
Most of Hawaii is not safe for Bikes! Especially when tour companies are allowed with over a dozen bikes to travel very narrow roads here on Hawaii island , these are greedy pop up tour companies who are dealing with very naïve and clueless customers
Bike raiders as well as pedestrians think rules on the roads do not apply to them. I've seen so many of them use their phones while cycling as well the pedestrians crossing the crosswalk. I've also seen some cyclists go through red lights! They think they're above the law!
Love that! Bike lanes are meant for wheels, not paws and feet! Exactly! That's what the sidewalk is for. Where I live, you can get a ticket for riding your bike down a sidewalk because it's meant for walkers. Same should go for bike lanes. Or people who park their car in the bike lane? WTF???
So they don't want to share the road???? bike riders are the problem. They have a poor attitude. bikers don't care about people getting hit by a vehicles. See then speeding on the sidewalks all over the place. They yell at people "get out of the way" almost hitting many. cops don't do anything. Just keep on driving their a/c down the road. They should remove all bike paths. If they don't want to share, why should we.

I work in town and some of these cyclists are cutting off cars and coming super close in busy intersections super fast
