I concur with everyone’s comments here! You have a depth of understanding and a gift for articulating it so clearly. Thank you for your generosity in creating this series. I am a pianist and a sometime composer myself, and you inspire me to compose more. I have been working on a creative project involving Messiaen, which I would like to contact you about at some point in future. Again thank you!

Hello Andrew! Im halway through this video and I know I'll swallow the rest as quickly as possible. I was introduced to Messiaen's music and his theories only a few weeks ago, so this is just the kind of video series I need. Thank you!

As you mentioned Tournemire in this video, I encourage anyone watching to please acquaint themselves with his wonderful opus, L'Orgue Mystique. It's a large collection of solo works for pipe organ, divided into 52 suites, one for each Sunday of the church calendar. This music was mostly heard at the "Low Mass" where there is no vocal music, only organ music. Each suite usually includes five movements: an Introit / Entree, Elevation, Offertoire, Communion, and Sortie. It's really essential to understand that Tournemire's artistic vision was passionately focused on commentary/elaboration on Gregorian chant... which is probably why his work is not so well known by a general public these days. The church-going public was mostly hostile to his work in general, because chant was just not fashionable and was considered a relic of the past, especially to the priesthood. Thankfully these days, it's seeing a resurgence, and people are getting reacquainted with the works of Tournemire. It's important to note, that Tournemire considered his music ritual music, not music for the purposes of entertainment, but to the glory of God... and as such, his music should not to be performed or listened to in the same manner as one would approach secular concert repertoire.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment…. I did later on put together a video on Tournemiere ( not a composer I was familiar with so it was a pleasure to do a bit of research). I’d love your further input. Decomposing Messiaen: Tournemire, Messiaen and the anonymous liturgical composer

Thanks for this vid! I’ve been trying to understand why Messiaen’s music sounds the way it does.
    Fantastic Karl Marx beard btw.

Hi Andrew. I’m glad someone took on this subject in TH-cam - I’m still working through them. What is the name of the french composer mentioned at 43:40 and that piece?

Hello -- the piece is 'L/orgue mystique' by Charles Tournemiere. Here's a link to the score: imslp.org/wiki/L%27Orgue_mystique,_Opp.55-57_(Tournemire,_Charles)
