I Did also for another job interview at Climax Studios on another Xbox game that had a manga/anime look, they wouldn't tell me what it was at the time, but I suspect it was Sudeki. (didn't get that job as I didn't want to move house for what was essentially a freelance position)

"On foot" racing games are such an underutilized concept that's never reached its fullest potential yet. Between pivoting, quick/side stepping, wall jumping, and general platforming, it can bring something to the table that you just can't do with conventional vehicles. Oddly enough, the Daytime-style stages of Sonic Unleashed, Generations, and Colors would be perfect in a multiplayer setting if they were slowed down a bit for easier interactions. But it seems like Sega's determined to keep Sonic and friends behind the steering wheel.
@@RebelTaxi Hey Pan, if you're looking for another on-foot racer I'd try out "Rayman M" Although it's only partially an on-foot racer, on it's own it's 'kinda an interesting story, 'game had two distinct genres, an arena brawler 'n' an on-foot racer and was released for sixth gen consoles, and Windows, but Ubisoft actually published a remake, on the original PlayStation called "Rayman Rush" which was only the racing segments.

@@gh0rochi363 Xbox should rethink their methods of adding games on the xbox (such as making tons of sequels of halo,gears,forza) and instead let other AAA/indie developes have more freedom of experimenting and creating fresh & new ideas. Also as for them buying other studios i could care less unless they really do offer new games,regardless of exclusivity because I'm sure at this point Microsoft/Xbox don't give a shit about the word "exclusives" anymore.
I think the reason many of these wacky mascots didnt catch on was because they were starting to get too insane and out there for a general audience to latch onto. They make Crash Bandicoot look like Sherlock Holmes in comparison
This was what made the 6th gen consoles so awesome. The PS2,Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo Gamecube, and OG Xbox all had very unique and experimental games and tbh i wish we still had that today.
@@Abel-Alvarez Issue here isn't that "only one generation of consoles ever experimented" since the 5th and 4th experimented just as much as the 6th did, the problem is how experimenting slowed down steadily since the beginning of the 7th generation up until both its end and the beginning of the 8th gen where both studios and developers stopped experimenting with anything period, since everything shifted to a formulaic structure whitin the industry (let it be with AAA companies and their cinematic shooters, or with most indie devs either doing copycat "retro throwbacks" where they offer almost nothing compared to what they're inspired to or cheap "ironic" trash that's only made to hop into the current hot topic of the day).

Also my bad for not mentioning the previous generations of consoles from the 1st gen (odyssey) to the 5th (ps1,saturn,n64,jaguar,3do,etc.) Since those all had great games and their own unique personalities. Yeah the 7th gen (while it also had a few great games as well) did have a decline in experimental games (as well as a lack of japanese games too) due to the popularity of shooters from games like Call of Duty,Battlefield, and Gears of War. Honestly the 7th gen (ps3,360,wii) was one of my least favorite console generations as you can tell. Also thanks for mentioning the issues with some indie games too because too many times have i already caught seeing many 8/16 bit platformers that latch on "nostalgia" more than anything. There are some amazing and creative indie games don't get me wrong there,but it's rare and honestly takes some time to find and see if its worth playing or not. It's like for every one experimental creative game you get like 20-30 rehashed/half assed "nostalgia-goggled" games that offer nothing new to gaming. And as for AAA developers theres also that same issue along with sequels and remasters.

I guess Ratchet and Jak (eventually) were a bit on the "edgier" side as far as platformers go, but Microsoft really pushed that motif full throttle. The attitude here is as early 2000s as it gets. Also Sonic R is a pretty fun game tbh
Ironically enough, the OG Xbox failed miserably in Japan but the best exclusives for the console came from Japan. I spent more time playing Ninja Gaiden, JSRF, and Sega’s other offerings than I did with Halo or any other MS exclusive. OG Xbox was also the only place where you could play CVS2 and 3S online in the 2000’s.
Microsoft cut a deal with Sega. They helped them make a version of Windows CE for the Dreamcast (that Sega ended up not using) and in exchange the Xbox would get some exclusive games from Sega.
@@jamesalexander5559 Sega used the Windows CE for a couple of their games and the results proved disastrous. The overhead if Windows CE on the disc meant performance issues, notably with Sega Rally 2.

@@jacobjohnson7369 Yep, when I think of Xbox games I generally think of stuff like Halo, Blinx, Voodoo Vince, and other games of that style (also for some reason Sudeki as it was probably one of the first Western games I saw with a very anime aesthetic, though to my understanding the first Western game that tried to go for an anime look was Shogo in 1998). That generation was also one where Sony had more first party platformers than Nintendo so I tend to associate PS2 mostly with Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper, while the Gamecube was where Nintendo stuck to their guns with cartoony games like Mario and Pikmin, and gave us the first cel shaded Zelda (people may have shat on Wind Waker when it was revealed back in 2001 but nowadays it looks like most people no longer have that "ALL GAMES MUST LOOK AS REALISTIC AS POSSIBLE OR ELSE I HATE IT!" mentality). EDIT: Oh yeah but this was also the generation where Nintendo started to dip their toes into games you might not except from them like Eternal Darkness and Geist (both M rated games, and it wouldn't be until Bayonetta 2 they'd do another M rated title), plus Metroid made a big comeback after about 8 years of being dormant.

I've played Whiplash, the last game mentioned here, and I hated it, because I couldn't get past a certain part of it when I was a kid. I've beaten it, a few years ago, but even if I HADN'T accidentally broken my ps2 by cleaning it with the wrong kind of alcohol, it still gave me nightmares for awhile. But, still, I think I barely, briefly remember the game whacked, but barely. Maybe because Tara Strong was in it, and she's my favorite female voice actor? I don't know... my memory sucks sometimes. But, it's nice to learn some interesting stuff, about games you may never have heard of before, so it's educational, but without being boring, the best kind of educational. What, no Malice? That game was hyped as a launch title for the OG Xbox. The hammer-wielding main character was supposed to be voiced by Gwen Stefani. Then nothing. Somehow it got ended up on the PS2.
They legit had a fully naked woman as a playable character. Imagine the backlash if this ATTEMPTED to come out today. If it was cross platform Sony would have a field day with the censorship. Like playing as a box of light rays? I gotta admit, that a really good censor bar tracking program. Probably the hardest thing to program in said game.
They also got some transphobic jokes in there. I only noticed one, actually. When Van Tastic said "Hey there guys and gals and all you sick weirdos in between."

I always played as Samson when playing this with friends and almost always won Twisted System (we called it "Sit-Hup" and called out "sit" to duck and "hup" to jump as a way of messing with each other when speed picked up), so the sequence at 6:20 flicked me right in the nostalgias for all the victories I had back in the very early 2000's
Pan, I thank thee for shining a light on the niche games on the original Xbox that no other good channel has made a video on. This vidya is so good I'm going to put part 1 and 2 on a disc and make it a generational heirloom.
The early years of the OG Xbox are what I would consider the most interesting times of the Xbox brand. Lots of new IPs on a brand new system from a new console manufacturer, trying to find their own "Mario", a bunch of Sega exclusives, making it almost feel like an extension of the Dreamcast. Plus later on we got lots of PC to console ports that never got released on PS2/the Cube and gave it some interesting "exclusives" in that regard. This was also long before they were trying to push the system brand as an all-in-one entertainment unit (besides DVD playback), making it more focused on just being a games machine. Online features were there to allow people to play with each other from long distances, still a bit far off from the point of mandatory patches and microtransaction scams and certainly no mandatory online-requirements. Mad Dash Racing was also what Sonic R should have been. Plus it had Gex in it.
Whacked!.... A game I played as a 4-5 year old. That's right. 4 freaking years old! I'd always play as Lucy probably because whenever I chose her, her clothes popped off. And yes, I am a girl if any of you were wondering. Now 19 years old and I miss the days of playing this game.
It’s crazy how the first two games played a huge part with me having fun with my family and friends during parties. It always drove me crazy I could never remember Whacked and Fusion Frenzy names until now. Fusion Frenzy was actually pretty fun to play during parties but then again all of us who played it was competitive.

when I was a little kid, I was TERRIFIED of the concept of voodoo, so when my grandpa gave me his old xbox and some games with it, of course there was Voodoo Vince. i panicked and tried to put it in a paper shredder but it didn't work so i threw it down a vent.
Not gonna lie. I kind of miss these days of weird edgy video game mascots. It just feels like these characters were made from a good place. Not marketed to be relatable or be "good for audiences" just made to add to a game with a fun concept. We see way too many over the shoulder serious Joel knockoffs or relatable Indie characters these days. Just give me some insane edgy characters that are just as fun as the game itself is.
Please do more failed pilots • furby island - their were plans for a movie tie-in but canceled due to new changes on the nickelodeon staff, the cartoon would have been made by the people behind adventure time • owca flies - a spinoff of phineas and ferb
I remember helping Peewee Herman pirate some of these games back in the day. I’ll never forget finishing that limewire download, and seeing him turn to me and say “Whacked, is cracked.”
Do you know why Fusión Frenzy is so badass? The demo allows for local multiplayer with a ton of the best games no limit. Its INSANE how fun this was with cousins even as a demo. We could never find the original game but those were the good days.
Oh man, Whacked... Loved that shit when I was younger. I feel that might've gotten more popular but with the 7 deadly sins aspect getting washed out almost immediately and not being used in conjunction with anything other than character design, it kinda fell out of memory. My older brother and I played the hell out of it though, I remember us looking at the box for the first time, and I looked at the booklet and pointed out the thing with Lucy having black bars instead of the blue rubber suit, and my brother said "Don't be silly, she's not gonna be naked *in the game*" and sure enough, 5 seconds in *POP*
I just love how Microsoft spent like 4 years trying to establish an Xbox mascot that was something OTHER than Master Chief, and then when the 360 release trailers came around it was just like "whatever, it's Master Chief now, we don't even care anymore"
I absolutely love Voodoo Vince. The content was pretty simple, but it has quite the satirical sense of humor and nice music while being somewhat creepy at times. Dolly Playtime traumatized me back then!
Hearing Charles Martinet scream "Die now, you craphole" and "Imma gonna kill you" in his Luigi/Wario voice is something I never thought I needed in my life, and yet here we are.
Hearing Tara Strong, the voice actor of many of my favorite cartoon characters of my childhood, moan, feels so wrong. I don't even know how to feel about that at all.
Hope to see Volume 2 because Blinx is a very unjustly forgotten gem of videogames, and it is one of the few characters that is high poly for the previous generation, while at the same time introducing a function that the PS2 didn't have at the time.

Yeah I would love if Sonic tried more on foot racers. It's basically turning a platformer into a racer.
Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed is my personal favorite kart racer but I'd be down if Sega tried their hand at an on foot racing game again.

That generation was also one where Sony had more first party platformers than Nintendo so I tend to associate PS2 mostly with Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sly Cooper, while the Gamecube was where Nintendo stuck to their guns with cartoony games like Mario and Pikmin, and gave us the first cel shaded Zelda (people may have shat on Wind Waker when it was revealed back in 2001 but nowadays it looks like most people no longer have that "ALL GAMES MUST LOOK AS REALISTIC AS POSSIBLE OR ELSE I HATE IT!" mentality).
EDIT: Oh yeah but this was also the generation where Nintendo started to dip their toes into games you might not except from them like Eternal Darkness and Geist (both M rated games, and it wouldn't be until Bayonetta 2 they'd do another M rated title), plus Metroid made a big comeback after about 8 years of being dormant.

As a Playstation fan, it's fascinating to see games on the XBOX that I've never heard of.
Specially the amount of one offs. Most ps2 games got a sequel.
Fluffymiyster Yeah, but the reason you haven't heard of them is because they're obscure, and mostly, it's a good thing. I've played Whiplash, the last game mentioned here, and I hated it, because I couldn't get past a certain part of it when I was a kid. I've beaten it, a few years ago, but even if I HADN'T accidentally broken my ps2 by cleaning it with the wrong kind of alcohol, it still gave me nightmares for awhile. But, still, I think I barely, briefly remember the game whacked, but barely. Maybe because Tara Strong was in it, and she's my favorite female voice actor? I don't know... my memory sucks sometimes. But, it's nice to learn some interesting stuff, about games you may never have heard of before, so it's educational, but without being boring, the best kind of educational. Mascots are such an underrated type of art form...when done right.
The Sonic R soundtrack is _timeless._ Mostly in the sense that that genre of music was never popular, but also it sounds pretty good.
They legit had a fully naked woman as a playable character. Imagine the backlash if this ATTEMPTED to come out today. If it was cross platform Sony would have a field day with the censorship. Like playing as a box of light rays? I gotta admit, that a really good censor bar tracking program. Probably the hardest thing to program in said game.

I always played as Samson when playing this with friends and almost always won Twisted System (we called it "Sit-Hup" and called out "sit" to duck and "hup" to jump as a way of messing with each other when speed picked up), so the sequence at 6:20 flicked me right in the nostalgias for all the victories I had back in the very early 2000's

The early years of the OG Xbox are what I would consider the most interesting times of the Xbox brand. Lots of new IPs on a brand new system from a new console manufacturer, trying to find their own "Mario", a bunch of Sega exclusives, making it almost feel like an extension of the Dreamcast. Plus later on we got lots of PC to console ports that never got released on PS2/the Cube and gave it some interesting "exclusives" in that regard. This was also long before they were trying to push the system brand as an all-in-one entertainment unit (besides DVD playback), making it more focused on just being a games machine. Online features were there to allow people to play with each other from long distances, still a bit far off from the point of mandatory patches and microtransaction scams and certainly no mandatory online-requirements.
Mad Dash Racing was also what Sonic R should have been. Plus it had Gex in it.

I loved Fuzion Frenzy growing up in the mid 2000s.

Wow, Mad Dash Racing has a lot of weird similarities to Sonic Riders as well, especially the 3 character types.
Not gonna lie. I kind of miss these days of weird edgy video game mascots. It just feels like these characters were made from a good place. Not marketed to be relatable or be "good for audiences" just made to add to a game with a fun concept. We see way too many over the shoulder serious Joel knockoffs or relatable Indie characters these days. Just give me some insane edgy characters that are just as fun as the game itself is.

Do you know why Fusión Frenzy is so badass? The demo allows for local multiplayer with a ton of the best games no limit. Its INSANE how fun this was with cousins even as a demo. We could never find the original game but those were the good days.

Oh man, Whacked... Loved that shit when I was younger. I feel that might've gotten more popular but with the 7 deadly sins aspect getting washed out almost immediately and not being used in conjunction with anything other than character design, it kinda fell out of memory. My older brother and I played the hell out of it though, I remember us looking at the box for the first time, and I looked at the booklet and pointed out the thing with Lucy having black bars instead of the blue rubber suit, and my brother said "Don't be silly, she's not gonna be naked *in the game*" and sure enough, 5 seconds in *POP*
