    I love fishing a fly with wings but haven’t tied any for a long while. I’ve never used the waste end for propping it up like you showed. Now I need to get out my wing feathers again, if I can find them.

    Another classic model of rare elegance, easy to assemble, the only difficulty may be the wings. I also often wonder why worry about complaining about life when it is often these fly models that catch the most fish! And another fender assembly trick that I didn't know about. Thanks for this lesson. All the best.

    Nice way to tie the wings I'll have to give that method a go. I usually tie them facing forwards and fold a couple of the waste ends from between the wings - it helps to keep them separated.

      Deer hair makes for a great wing so I would certainly tye a few with that and I wouldn't worry about getting a perfect wing as it fishes best when it starts to open out..I'm glad you liked the video..

    A lot of value in whiting hen capes for dry fly use, thicker stems may be the only concern.

      @@DavieMcPhail thank you, I’m at the vice now ready to have a go. I came into fly-fishing/tying (aged 26) a bit later than most my fishing friends who’ve grown up fishing. Your videos have helped me gain confidence and technique that often they are now asking me to tie certain flies for them, so thank you very much! I hope one day you’ll release a book!

  • @Strutsi

    I'm a bit confused now. I thought hen cape doesn't work as hackle for dry flies? Do they float well enough, or is it just that you have to gink them well enough? That fuzzy look in the hackle is perfect but does it really work?

  • @catonfarm9757
    @catonfarm9757 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What are reasons to use hen as dry fly hackle? Are their advantages to using hen vs rooster on certain flies?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Caton Farm,
      I used hen hackles for dries for many years especially with some of the genetic hens as the small feathers I found worked really well when I was using them on size 16s down..I love as well mixing hen and cock hackles to make dries as they work really well for me..
