Going to religious leaders is a good thing so that we can find out that they can't do for us what we must do for ourselves. #1 teacher is within. We don't need a mommy or daddy anymore.

to observe thoughts non-judgmentally rather than identify with them is a interesting concept that fits in with the semiotic phrase 'this pipe is not a pipe'. I think people struggle to be non-judgmental due to the minds ability to create a domino effect of churning out ongoing thoughts by thinking about the past or future too much. That's why I value sound meditation too because it keeps my thought in the present timeline. What I take away from this interview particularly is that the process starts in layers from memory, thoughts to intellect like a hierarchy of levels. I think this higher self sits at the top of our structured hierarchy like Maslow's 'Hierarchy of Needs'. The power of archetypes is also interesting that's why I am interested in Freuds unconscious psychodynamic approach too and dream interpretation. It seems I am also looking for that breakthrough to find the part of me that never dies. To me it is about my soul and my connection with the creator of all things.

Peace Pilgrim who "died to self" lived to serve others for some 28 years afterwards. I believe I've heard that Yeshua was killed by the Romans and not dying from going into a state of nothingness. Neither did Ramakrishna and Nisaragadatta who lived for years and served in their others and yet didn't away into nothingness.
