    Our GREATEST Harvest EVER! | Harvest, Cure and Store Potatoes
    Hey hey y'all! We've been looking forward to this day for months! Today we are harvesting potatoes. We are turning about 8 lbs of seed potatoes into 35 lbs of food for our family. We planted these in our inground garden and we are pleased with the outcome. Of course we also learned some things to take with us into next time. The whole family got involved and we had a blast.

    I’m the grandson and son of the second largest potato producer in the north east. You can cut your seeds with only one eye. Dig your furrow 6” to8”deep, put your starter fertilizer in the bottom of the trench with a systemicide to control nematode and Colorado potato beetle larva. We used Temik but I understand it has been discontinued and is highly toxic. I got diarrhea from it being being a smart-aleck 17 year old. Putting it in the sidedress boxes on our 4 row Potato planter with bare hands. There are other options that are less toxic I hear. Cover the fertilizer and systemicide with about an inch of soil. Plant the seeds on top of that and cover with loose soil. Lightly water but leave the soil loose. After the plants come up hill them with loose soil or compost. After they come through that,sidedress them with a high nitrogen fertilizer (chicken manure is a great source for this). Water the potatoes with about 21/4 inches a week for optimal growth. Make sure to keep them hilled to prevent them from getting sunburn and turning green. More water means a larger potato. Good luck with your next crop. Signed, The Spudman.

    When you pull up a healthy seed potato w/ roots (+baby spuds !!) .. Plant back into the ground & trim off all green. You'll get a 2nd harvest w/ no effort. --💌🍒

    I really enjoyed your potato harvest video. It was lovely to see the kids involved. Many children think that veggies come from the store. Yours are blessed!

    Your video is a great reminder of the value of patience and perseverance. It takes a lot of time and effort to grow and harvest melons and oranges, but the end result is so worth it. And the fact that you're able to make a living by selling them at the market is even more impressive. Keep up the great work! And it's an honor to have you visit our channel, we can discuss more about our experiences in harvesting and building farms.

    My dad planted potatoes in old tires stacked up to harvest we just took off tire by tire and it was so much easier than digging. Also the tires helped keep some heat in

    That was so exciting, watching you harvest the potatoes. With everyone pitching in, and Wyatt bringing his tractor, it made quick work of it. You got a good amount, and will taste far better than anything you could buy. Have a wonderful week 💞

    Do you make your own compost? This soil looks like it's high clay content, you'll get more potatoes by adding organic matter to it like compost.

    • @OurSmallTownLife
      @OurSmallTownLife  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, we added composted a few times. We would alternate hilling with compost and just soil kicked up from beside the row.
