There are many great players with great stats, but only a few are truly respected and been looked up to, from their peers.

The hawks bench weren't really cheering as much as laughing in disbelief that Bird was unconscious and hitting everything.

If I was in a foxhole, in a war, I would want Larry with me.

The 3pt contest where he says that was in 86. That was the only one he didnt wear his warm up jacket. The next year ..."there's no need to talk. We all know who's going to win" ...and did so wearing his warm up jacket.

I thought so too. I think these videos get it wrong. It was the first-ever long-range shootout that he just sat in the locker room saying nothing and looking around the room, until he said "I'm just trying to figure out who's coming in second"

I think the complaint about "white guys guarding" him was a mind game. He knew as well as anyone that Bobby Jones of Philly and later on Craig Ehlo were extremely quick and athletic. (Jones in particular was one of the best defenders of all time at the 3.)
This was the strategy around the league -- put a smaller quick wiry guy on Bird to deny him the ball. As you watch these Bird videos, note the players guarding him -- almost always about 6'6" to 6'8", thin, wiry quick. Doc, Cooper, Robert Reid, Pippen, Dominique, Jones, Ehlo, Rodman, occasionally Jordan and Worthy, etc. If you see a bigger guy on him, it's due to a switch or foul trouble.
If you can find the video of Barkley telling that story about Bird complaining to him about being guarded by a white guy, carefully note where Barkley says, "...and I'm standin' there, laughin' in the middle of a game..." See? He got Barkley's focus off the game.
(To be fair, Bird was probably serious about Ben Poquette, but that's another story...)

You should watch Bird's trash talking video. He was plain nasty in that one! You know how Larry hated to be guarded by white players. So one of them who was guarding him, Craig Ehlo, told a story about Bird talking to him the whole game. Ehlo said that Larry was having a bad first half. He wasn't shooting well, and only had about 8 points. So as they were walking off the court at the end of the half, Ehlo turns to Bird and says "Wow, you only have 8 points on me. Now that's defense!" And Bird looked at him and said,
"There's two halves to this game!"
Ehlo said Bird came out in the second half and destroyed him. He said Larry hit about 10 shots in a row on him. And on the 10th shot, Bird switched to his left hand and asked Ehlo if his mother was watching! That was hilarious!

I can understand Bill Walton perhaps not remembering correctly, but now every story that you see in these videos keeps referring to the left-handed game as the last game of a long road trip. It was the third game of a seven-game road trip, and at Los Angeles was next, which is why he said I'm saving my right hand for the Lakers

Larry Bird's 60 point game against the Hawks, or his 49 point triple double against the Portland Trailblazers in the final year of his career when his back and feet were vanilla yogurt.

I with they had the story from John Stockton where Larry walks over to the Utah Jazz bench right before the game, stands there and looks at them, then says "Yeah, I feel like...43." Then he walks away and had 43 by the end of the 3rd quarter before exiting the game.

The first savage moment is partly incorrect. Telling the other shooters he was looking to see who was coming in second was at the inaugural 3-point contest in 1986. The rest of the story is correct.
