LT230 Transfer Case Spud Shaft & Engine In! × 4BT Cummins Discovery #18 [Land Rover Build]

  • No potatoes were harmed in the making of this video, some metal was! Here I'm "divorcing" the LT230 transfer case with the help of machinist friend. And thankfully so, because otherwise there'd be a lot more fail in this video haha! Building this "spud shaft" links the transmission to the transfer case via a single u-joint, so the transfer case can be rotated how ever I want for optimal front/rear driveshaft angles AND maximizing ground clearance. All while keeping the length of the drivetrain as short as possible!
    ~ PART#18 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

    "Divorced Transfer Case" = separate mounting via u-joints, & "Married Transfer Case" = directly bolted to the transmission's output, with no u-joints between the 2 gear boxes, just splined shafts between.

    Just a little marketing idea for you. I have searched several times for 4BT or cummins conversion and swaps and have never seen your videos come up. Luckily youtube recommended your video separately. Maybe others are searching specifically for "4bt/cummins conversion" or 4bt/cummins swap"

    Dude, super cool! i never realized that there is an adapter shaft sitting on the back of the 4hp22's.. are you going to beef up the mounting for the transfer case? considering the transfer is a separate entity to the engine it could twist in funny ways

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here! I thought I was being had when the bolt came out easy but the shaft had a little sticktion to it before popping out. Oh yeah the trans & transfer will both get upgrades in their mountings, especially seeing as both only had a single mount point each from stock.

      Nope... haha! Figured right from the start I'd be adding a cowl or getting creative with a bump of some sort in the hood, what with these B-series cummins engines being rather tall.

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You got it, that's the U1604 meant for the 35-spline Ford9 w/1350's. The other yoke earlier in the video was a cast steel 29-spline that I didn't end up using.

      TheDieselmb Yep it's fully supported in there, and I want to do a full rebuild on one of the LT230 cases I have for this build, so hopefully I can get into detail of the internals before too long.

  • @NathanNostaw
    @NathanNostaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very nice conversion. I really like the options once the transfer case is divorced. So many combos of different makes and model gearboxes or transfer cases. What was the main reason for doing so in this build, as the length gained was minimal and you seem to be using compatible box and trans? How have you mounted the two together? Boxed housing around the uni joint?

    • @NathanNostaw
      @NathanNostaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh and very nice uni joint machining and welds. Could be one of the strongest parts of the drive train.

    • @NathanNostaw
      @NathanNostaw 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just found the reason for divorced transfer case in previous video comments. The mixed brand/make parts.

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Had the guidance & handiwork of a talented friend for that. Took more than a few hours of pondering, figuring, & measuring to form the plan to run a hybrid Chevy/Dodge 2WD transmission with the spud shaft linking the transfer case. My only fear is the possible transfer case internals getting stressed caused by increasing torque output from the 4BT as I inevitably modify it in the future...

  • @vapeking8882
    @vapeking8882 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You do anymore hp mods yet? What hp and torque ya think its at? Im going from 6bt 350hp to 400hp range strapped to 6 speed allison 2 wheel drive trans then i need a custom spud shaft to the np205 transfer case but nervous about it holding the horsepower and torque also being a crew cab f350 4x4 with 35in tires. Your thoughts you think it would hold up??

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not yet, and it should be in the 225-250hp / 550-600tq range with this combination of parts/mods. Next upgrades will be injectors & head studs, so that I can bleed boost reference from the turbo's wastegate to allow it to push past the current 28psi limit. This will get me in the 300-350hp range, which is where I imagine I will stop pushing. Any more and compound turbos are likely necessary to keep it fun and useful to drive.

  • @eghty8fox780
    @eghty8fox780 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    What are you thinking for the hood?

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A big hole! Actually I'm thinking either a cowl I can attach to the hood that'll give me the clearance, or try another manifold that brings that turbo down a bit.

    • @eghty8fox780
      @eghty8fox780 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tinker that was my first thought. It looks way up there

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah, the 4BT is no shorty, even more so when you try & run a 6BT sized turbo & intake horn. A cowl would lend a hand to cooling & maybe look pretty cool. And I might even try & build my own log manifold to put the turbo right where I want it, we'll see.

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      garage and road Should be just over 200 with the modifications I've made, but also with 500-600 torque output, at VERY low rpm!

    • @percula8
      @percula8 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      4BT's easily do 200HP/450TQ @ 1800 RPM with just some simple mods to the injection pump and a good turbo. Doing some nice work Tinker, I've got a white Disco and I'd love to drop a 4BT in it.

  • @percula8
    @percula8 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It looks like the motor (or at least the turbo) is sitting higher than the hood line? Does it fit below the hood?

    • @Tinker1837
      @Tinker1837  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim Hecklinski It is! The valve covers will be quite close anyway (due to the tall stature of these old Cummins engines & the solid axle right below it) so the plan all along was to fit a cowl to the hood. Maybe if the valve covers clear but the turbo doesn't then I may just run a little bump like you'd see in the old DSM cars. It is handy having all the clearance on the passenger side for intake & downpipe, but I may still do something different for an exhaust manifold to bring the turbo down a bit further yet.
