- No matter how advanced smart bombs get, and no matter how stealthy and quick an aircraft can become, the A-10 has one factor that guarantees it can never truly be replaced: its gun.
These days, pretty much any warplane can drop guided munitions with pinpoint accuracy, but what makes the A-10 so special is one of the only weapons used by the US Air Force that isn’t precision-guided: the 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger gun with 1,150 incendiary rounds.

If you listen carefully you can hear that it is NOT a voice actor but a computer. You can hear incomplete words (clipped). I have heard the voice in several videos. Words are not pronounced correctly.
TheAznative101 He's a well known voice actor. He has just fallen on hard times when his wife Annabelle left him and took their 4 kids. He started huffing diesel fumes and it has destroyed his left frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for speech and motor speech control. He still maintains a contract on youtube and is forced to narrate these video clips although he sounds a bit strange now. Im hoping his career can recover so he can get back to narrating some of his more well known videos like the "planet earth " series.
Good story. I have heard 'him' on several videos. He mispronounces words and clips some I still say a computer voice that probably 'reads' from a text that is keyboarded in. If you think he is computer that reads from keyboarded text. I do admit it is a good story. The frontal lobe is not the part that controls speech. Still and all good story.

No mater what computer voice they use, you cant get around how lame it sounds.
There are a few different kinds of ammunition that can be used by the gun - not just incendiary rounds. The most effective is what we would call a "combat mix" that alternates high explosive and armor piercing rounds that utilize an extremely dense depleted uranium slug. An old Air Force buddy of mine, an A-10 crew chief, once told me that the plane needs to dive at a specific angle or the recoil will stall the aircraft mid-flight.

It would be awesome to see an aircraft developed with some more modern features as a replacement to the A-10 built around the GAU-8 gatling gun similar to the A-10. That way you have a modern aircraft with stealth features but the military can still use it's existing loading and ground support hardware for maintenance. Our existing A-10's could then be modified with drone capabilities.

I have watched a 100's of video's with troops on the ground and you never heard a bunch of Marines cheer louder than when they hear that sound. There is no close ground support aircraft in the pipeline. I have NO idea how many lives this air frame has saved but just ask a grunt on the ground how it feels to hear an A-10 Burp overhead.

It's not just the gun. It is the ability to loiter for a lot longer than other aircraft, it carries more weapons than other aircraft. It is designed specifically for this role. It's not just the gun, although the gun is pretty damn sweet.
It is also the armor and triple redundant systems built into the airframe.
It's the more modern version of the sandies in Vietnam.

The depleted uranium rounds ARE incendiary rounds. The A-10 carries API rounds, not AP.

not valid as depleted uranium contains next to little amounts of its radioactive isotopes the US apperently has declared that it isnt sufficient enough to be dangerous or carcinogenic to humans. also it uses like about 2 or 0.2% of the shell is only depleted uranium metal
The GAU-8 is usually loaded with a mix of high explosive and armour piercing rounds. Double whammy! Not much can survive that.

Good vid terrible voice, there are other reason for A-10 being irreplaceable other than just the gun but the gun is a big one.
The fact it comes home with more damage than any other plane ever.
The Fact that the pilot is sitting in a titanium bathtub.
The fact it carries missiles as well as bombs as well as the gun.
The fact that where it unloads nothing survives .
The fact that it was totally designed to support ground troops, and very little else.
The only other competition in defending troops is a helicopter, and they are delicate in comparison to the A-10

I don't know the answer to that question but I have seen an a-10 in flight, over northern bavaria in 1980. I thought it was rather slow at that time, but I had no idea of the lethal capability it possessed. I was a 13fox for the 1st of the 64th cavalry. Look it up. We were the 1st in the world to try out an Abrams tank in the field. Grafenwoer, I think it was. We thought we were badasses then. How little did we know?

I agree upgrade and possible do a new revised version to replace the older air frames, Tax money better spent than on super sonic planes. Each has its merits as a weapon but the A10 fills a big gap that would be left open if the plane were moth balled
Terry - The A-10 uses a completely different system. The aircraft would still need to be redesigned even if it was given the same helmet as the F-35 to incorporate all the sensors, and that would mean cutting back on the A-10's only real advantage which is loiter time compared to similar sized aircraft.
Morgan - As it has been for the last decade the A-10 fills a gap so small that almost every other combat aircraft in the US military does more CAS. Other options are more expensive, but more effective, or far cheaper and almost as effective

Would you care to quote an example of this? The A-10 is more efficient than the fast jet fleet the USAF is squandering on "CAS" missions in Afghanistan and Syria. The next generation of CAS types will be turboprops.

I remember when they first came out in 1975 Tank killers. I was at Langley working on the new F-15's, They had to return the A-10 because the engines were under powered, the guns were amazing! God help the A10 if there was another jet in the area, they were sitting ducks.

Updating the A-10 is exactly what they have been doing since 2006. And it does cost a crapload of money. A 1990s A-10A cost the same as a Block 52 F-16C. It's very likely that a current A-10C would cost around $50m per unit if newly built

I would disagree. Defending the United States against a full scale invasion by a foreign military is exactly when you would need a cold war style tank buster. Fighting ISIS in their Toyota pickup trucks overseas is where you don't really need a twin engine close air support jet with 22,000 pounds of bombs.
Defending the US shouldn't require a tankbuster at all, considering they just have to prevent any large scale naval invasions.

This is my all-time favorite plane. The A-10s were responsible for 50% of all of the enemy vehicles destroyed in the First Gulf War. There's never been another plane that's ever come close to doing anywhere near that level of destruction. Besides being one of the most efficient vehicles to ever enter combat, they're extraordinarily maneuverable, extraordinarily easy to operate and extraordinarily safe for the pilots flying them. I don't foresee the military coming up with a better vehicle anywhere in the near future.

this aircraft destroyed more scud missiles and enemy armor than ALL other aircraft combined in both Iraq wars. how's that for a deadly usefull aircraft dip stick.
Those scuds were literally immobile targets being actively painted by SAS and SFOD-D, the A-10's were almost the only coalition aircraft tasked to the operation. That's not even vaguely impressive.
An A-10 is an Attack aircraft designed to take out SAMS and provide air to ground support. That 30mm gun and a 12 missile loadout is tough to match. Bring in the AC-130? Why when you got something smaller and more agile that can perform the same task?

The A-10 fleet was expected to be cut in half after just two weeks of tank hunting over the Fulda Gap, AA has only gotten better since then.
A "bird strike" nearly put an Israeli F-35 out of service. When a bird strike nearly takes out an A-10, I will believe it is replaceable by the F-35.

In the case of the F-35I, the US is the only country with the equipment to repair such damage currently, so it is more a case of Israel not having a choice.
A-10 is irreplaceable by the F-35. The pig will never be up to snuff in the role compared to the A-10.

The fear it strikes into enemy's heart is irreplaceable. The last thing you see will be your body shredded into small chunks, following by a whimpering "BRRRT" as you lose conscious. You know you're the good guy when you hear BRRRRT.

That gun was designed to puncture Russian tank armor. It's a bit overkill for a pickup truck. You can sling guns on a Super Tucano (or something similar) and get similar results for a lot less of a price tag and being newer you wouldn't have to worry about cracks in the wing roots. It's a great plane but it's going to be replaced sooner or later, especially with as much as it's being used. Now let the fighting begin.......
Does the super Tucano have the airframe protection and redundancies that give the a10 the ability to operate with near impunity at low altitudes?
