  • Part 1 - In January of 2018 I went back to Chino CA to get an update on my Douglas A-26 restoration project. It was 3 months since my last visit and I was going, hoping for the possibility that the plane would be ready for a taxi test . . . well . . . watch and see what came about and see what progress has actually been made. Still, we're getting closer to see this beautiful bird flying again.

    That shop is one of the best restoration shops around and Carl, Tony and Mark are some of the most knowledgeable restoration experts in the business. When they get done with that airplane it just might be the best A-26 ever.

    The guys are on edge and probably with reason ... 27 years is a long time, even for a plane restoration but Kermit keeps his cool hahahaha.

    My personal favorite has always been the P-38 even though I know this video is about a fighter/bomber. It’s so amazing what your doing saving history like that. Please keep doing what your doing.

    This was reminding me of when Griff Rhys Jones' Pembrokeshire Farm was being restored. He left the farm in the hands of contractors with promises that it would be mostly complete when he returned. When Griff did return he was shocked. He walked around saying that they had hardly done anything, it looked as if it hadn't been touched.
    I am sure that the team at Chino are more professional than that. There was probably a lot of work done under the skin with the A-26 that we are not seeing. It is a complex machine.

    Last time it looked about 75% done with about 90% to go and now it looks about 76% done with 89% to go. Maybe next year for Oshkosh. If you're lucky. As for your other projects there, I'd say find another restoration shop if you don't want to be making your visits on the Handi-Bus from the nursing home, lol.

    What a dedicated bunch they are and the workload is immense on these old bombers,you cannot take any chances with heavy undercarriage units like those and everything has to be properly rigged,good steady progress there since Kermits last visit to Chino,this is labour intensive skilled work and it has to be right with every seal perfect in the hydraulic system,doubtful if those tyres have many landings left in them but no doubt they will change those before flight.

    You need to decide if you are in the expensive reconstructive business or in the wonders of fright live museum education and experience .
    Can you accomplish both dreams?
    No one else is going to rejuvenate these wonderful aircraft and find the money to accomplish it. So as far as I can see your job is to make sure these historic aircraft last into the next 10 generations. There will always be people who have the same dedication and enthusiasm even after you are gone. You are building your legend in the continuation of wonderful historical aircraft.
    All the best.

    IN THE 70'S MY WIFE AND I WAS HEADING OUT ON A VACATION, THERE WAS AN AIR SHOW GOING ON AT SELFRIDGE AIR BASE. I RAN THROUGH JUST TO SEE WHAT PLANES WERE THERE. HERE SAT A B-26. I ASKED WHERE IN THE WORLD THEY HAD FOUND ONE. THEY SAID THEY RECOVERED IT FROM THE ONE OF THE ALEUTIAN ISLANDS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD ABOUT IT AGAIN. COULD THIS BE THAT PLANE?

      Its a long way from running. It really hasn't progressed much at all. You working for the restorer trying to put a little positive spin on what looks like a couple weeks worth or work done since then?

    • @Heathh49008
      @Heathh49008 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh certainly... but those look like fresh engines hung, and they're running gear checks with the controls all "tensioned and adjusted" and "Wiring sorted to the cockpit."
      Those planes have interchangeable nose units that go on rather quickly, and if he was implying the avionics are complete by the "wiring" comment, then a few good guys could have her ready for a taxi test in fairly short order.
      By that I mean weeks... if you'll pardon the pun.

    • @Heathh49008
      @Heathh49008 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish.
      I used to volunteer as a kid at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo when they were still a flying museum. Basically just the 16 year old that hung around until they put me to work in the restoration area and flight line pulling chocks and running firebottle and such.
      That's pretty close in systems and size to the Tigercat we had. (I think Rod Lewis owns her now) If the panels are done, controls and engines are done, and they are finishing gear checks with brakes and tires on, I would say they need to pop on the gun nose, hang the props and start run-ups. (and paint of course)
      It just depends on the manpower they have to throw at her.
      If I'm wrong and they still have the panels in chunks, missing components, etc... I could be way off, of course.

      I think ur confusing it with the P61 "Black Widow" It served mainly as a night interceptor. Luftwaffe F104s where called widowmakers however due to their awful safety record 😆

      I think he hates having that camera follow Kermit around. I've noticed several of the people he visits seem to dislike it or atleast seem to act strange because of it. I'm grateful that he records this stuff so that we can all enjoy and see things we'd never get to see otherwise but I do honestly think it makes things awkward at times.

    • @dogsbd
      @dogsbd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The color is period correct, I imagine the type / quality of the paint is somewhat better than it was in the 1940's.

      Nope, Velocity aircraft either have all fixed gear or all retractable gear, that aircraft only had a retractable nose gear, and the canopy gives it away as a Cozy. Also, it's just not pretty enough to be a Velocity, that was my first clue.

      @@danielweinbaum Daniel, a 109 had a wingspan of about 32 feet. It was very small and light. The A/B-26 is a large twin engined airplane. It's big, it's heavy. As a pilot, I can't think of too many large heavy muti -engined airplanes that can out turn a small light single engined one. And the roll rate of an Invader just isn't that good. Sorry, but it didn't happen. And if it did, that sure wasn't Adolf Galland at the controls of that Messerschmidt!
