Yeah the little subtleties are there for sure whereas in past album promotional stuff they always jived really well and were like teenage boys. At this time though they were the biggest rock band in the world and that kinda money and pressure changes things. The management change they underwent really drove a wedge in between them.

Patrick Langan is it really? I don't get it. Is it sounds like the dam Van Hagar stuff but without the big hits. Never was hot on the Sammy voice, but sometimes they grab me in a bit. Truly Van Hagar, not Van Halen.

Feelin' reminds me of a dentist appointment ditto Big Fat Money. There's a few nuggets here and there (Aftershock is one of their best) and the sound was very good but the songs were very average imo

As an old man that was DEVASTATED when Dave left, you are 100 percent right. Vh had 1 more album with Dave and then a downward slide. Sammy saved them.
I always felt when I was listening to Van Halen with Sammy ... that I was listening to an adult/mature rock band. I no longer felt like I was listening to a band that wrote songs for 14 year olds .... the record Psycho Circus (kiss) comes to mind. i find it very sad this group tore itself apart. They really had lightning in a bottle. Probably the most gifted music writer/guitar player combined with one of the all-time great vocalists .. such a loss. They could have gifted us with another 4-5 albums over the years. Sammy mourns losing his freidnship with Eddie. I hope he (at the very least) can re-gain that. That would be enough for me.
Van Halen with Sammy is my all time favorite music. I can only wish Eddie and Alex would check their egos and make more music with Sammy and Mikey. Time is slipping away boys!

Ed was supposedly “sober.” Of course, Ed is an alcoholic. So by that point he was such a mess internally. A few years later he would be completely off the wagon yet again.

Man, there is no way you can tell what was really going on in the band watching this video. They played it off very well here like Sammy and the brothers were still getting along. I really wish that they could have work things out and continued with Sammy.

Contrary to Sam's book of lies , it was all Sam's fault with his big mouth . In a Van Halen compilation you can see Sam in a backstage section of an arena saying " This is MY band ." His own words . And right after he says " Lead singer of the band leader of the band what's the difference ?" Again , his own words . Whatever happened he said something that really pissed Eddie off .
Every interview they have done with sammy is sammy always portryain them as the ultimate best friends and family which never was, especially at this time
I will always love this album. It's true - around this time there were tensions, especially between ed and sam. For me “balance“ was a special record. The sound was darker and that's what i liked. Eddies tone was awesome and it's no surprise that the musicman-evh-guitar is so legendary. To be honest, i prefer the facelift for the body (peavey/evh wolfgang) because it's less chunky and more snazzy. Otherwise the tone from evh/axis was timeless. Back to “balance“. When i start to play guitar in 1994, i only knew jump, but didn't know the band. The first big name i was impressed for was brian may. I remember 1995 - i watched the pensacola-footage from the balance-tour at mtv...and that was the first time i really noticed ed. From this point, he was my hendrix and although i like so many guitar players (lukather, vai, knopfler, gilmour, govan, stevens), ed was/is the most important from all. By the way: Later i was wondering when i watched earlier videos and ed had wear long hair😂 For me, he was the “balance“-guy with short haircut and beard for a long time... Of course i knew that he was ill but i wished so much that he'd win the battle. Now it's so strange. 50 years after jimi died, it's the second big innovator for guitar-abuse. All i know is - ed will be missing but his musical influence will stay. A real guitar hero and it's nice to hear, that he and sam spoke again. R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen
When my boy Sammy entered, no more cover tunes to fill the CD. DLR was awesome at the beginning but Sammy Hagar can hold his own on guitar, great singer/songwriter and can run the stage like no one else !!! DLR, Drunk and talk to much at every show I saw period.
Dan V the first album wasn't bad. I was around, it was original and had some chops and great sound. Didn't care for any if it after that. And I like Van Hager too, it's just really not to be compared. But amazing that Eddie and the boys had album after album with songs that struck a chord with people. In reality, besides DLR 1st album and a few cool Montrose jams, those singers were much more lucky to be part of anything starting with Van
I loved Balance and i read a great comment in this comments section that said "Balance is how contemporary rock should sound". The mixing and sound they got out of the drums, bass and Eddies guitar is just phenomenal. It would be a fucking stellar album if it wasnt for Cant Stop Loving You, that song was just milk toast shit, sorry. People that bash this album also dont take into context at all how much rock n roll was in the trash can at this point. It was in a real bad place. Albums arent created in vacuums, the hot things and trends at the time play a part in how that album will sound (like synthesizers in the 80s), rock was not the big sound in the mid 90s, pop, hip hop and rap were. The mid and late 90s was all about Oasis, Alanis Morrisette, Toni Braxton, Hip Hop and gangster rap. Rock was on the ropes and damn near dead but Van Halen was still rocking and their label needed some pop-ish hits which would explain the shit songs Not Enough and Cant Stop Loving You. And for the people saying Eddie was all fucked up in this video, he was actually drinking Odouls non-alcheholic beer. Guitar Player magazine put him on the cover and did a big article about his sobriety (and hair cut) in either 1995 or 1996 and he was sober in the 1995/1996 timeframe. Balance was a great album but, as in this interview, Sammy was being pretty fucking unbearable and prima donna-ish and owned a big part of the split. Not saying at all that it was ALL on Hagar but when things go bad all the adults in the room have to own a slice of the shit-pie.
Check the body language of Ed and Al when Sammy's speaking about not wanting to do anything for a day while on tour around 6:20. No wonder the band broke apart. I think it was a mistake to not play in the Netherlands more, but what do I know, I'm a mere mortal. I really miss this lineup and wish these four would get back together.
got into this album more recently, never really liked it much when it came out, i think because i just loved 5150 and OU812 so much, but i've come to appreciate it a lot more especially Seventh Seal.
Sammy's rant at 5.50 is actually him being deadly serious. It was him against Ed & Al at that time, with Mike going along with everything the brothers said.
The more I re-familiarize myself with all things Van Halen, & coming from a much older perspective at this time, I'm really un-impressed with Mike's inability to be his own man...regardless of the issues (in which they have completely opposite views on), or what side of the fence he eventually landed on. He may have attempted to avoid conflict, by playing this kind of wimpy ass, silent role, but it didn't' solve anything...so, in my opinion, he's equally to blame for the misunderstandings & discord between them. The most disappointing example of this is hearing his IV about "How he's really bothered he & Ed never resolved some of their issues". So who's fault is that, Mike?! 100% Ed's? Hell no! How old are you now? How many years have gone by & you can't pick up the phone or knock on his door? You "know" he's sick, yet you continue to make no effort? That's Mike's fault, NOT Ed's, & he has to own that now. Because of Mike's inability to be a "grown-up", he never spoke to, or wrote to Ed before he died. Now he's gone & no one can fix it. It's a terrible tragedy between people who shared an enormous amount of incredible memories together...such a very sad waste of time, they ALL abused. I had read, Ed texted to Sammy, towards the end, "Give my love to Mike". And when Sammy "finally" chose to reach out to Ed last year, Ed's first response was, "What took you so long?!". Their relationships, like it or not, that have been played out for the entire world to see, should be a very tough lesson for anyone paying attention.

@@ColtraneTaylor I have read recently from a very reliable source, "from Ed's perspective", after Sammy left, & Mike chose to go & play with him, that was Mike telling him he was done with Van Halen. It was "after" this time period, when Ed turned to his 15 yr old son Wolfgang, & asked him if he was interested in playing "for real" with the band. (As Wolf had been regularly practicing at home, for fun, w/his Dad & Uncle Al). Not the other way around, as has been widely reported, that Mike was dumped & replaced by Wolf. Ed was extremely hurt by what he perceived, as the facts on the ground, that Mike chose to leave the band & follow Sammy. I have since read that Mike has claimed, "this was absolutely not true, that he never quit Van Halen, that he went to play w/Sammy simply out of boredom". At the time, Ed was at a real low point re his alcoholism (hence the trouble it caused w/Sammy) & had decided to take a long break from touring & recording. Now, this seems to be a reasonable thing to want to do, but considering the extreme tension Sammy's leaving had caused, & Ed's frame of mind, Mike didn't think it was appropriate to have a single conversation w/Ed & Al about this move, BEFORE he made it? To ensure everyone was on the same page? At the end of the day, "perceptions are everything", right or wrong. So it's prudent to actually speak to one another. This was on Mike to ensure where his loyalties remained, or not. To get Ed & Al's blessing, or not. Van Halen made Mike a VERY rich man, & that conversation was definitely owed to the group, before he went off to play one note with Sammy, "in particular", or anyone else, (outside of Van Halen). It was also stated, what furthered the pain for Ed & Al, was when their Mother died, apparently Mike never reached out to them. Further building on the very bad feelings that had already been established. Mike was quite a grown up man at the point all these things went down...but apparently in age only, clearly not emotionally. I'm not at all implying Mike is not a nice guy, but he's sat back, all these yrs, & let Ed & Al be the bad guys in the scenario, & I think it's complete BS. His approach has been quite cowardly, in my opinion. He was equally responsible for their fracture & "misunderstandings" & should now find the maturity to admit it.

I feel the same as you when I hear these stories about Roth and Ed bullying him out of his share. I don't know about their tactics, but they were more than right to cut his share. Mike said sometime ago in a video, how he still feels like a teenager. I just think he's not a very intelligent person, almost a balance to the massive talent in that group. He's like a "failed" part in Eddie's dream, wasn't as perfect as he could have wished. It's not Mike's fault though, he's just not very clever, just an average guy.

He had been with Van Halen almost as long as he'd been with his wife...would he walk out on her & not have a conversation w/her? If so, then he would be an even bigger immature idiot than I already believe him to be. While Ed & Al may not have handled rearranging Mike's contract, as well as they certainly could have, I believe it was completely within their right to do so. After many, many years of very hard work, w/Ed doing the majority of the work, (writing & arranging their music) Ed clearly felt Mike really had not "earned" the right to continue to make the same amount of money. Years go by, things change (or don't) & settle in. I honestly don't see that as being unreasonable. Had Mike seriously disagreed with this, pretty sure he would've told Ed & Al to F off & that would've been the end of it. Mike has 70 million in the bank, 100% because he was a part of "Van Halen". Roth was always full of himself & obviously felt he could do better w/out Van Halen, which clearly proved to be incorrect. Regardless of their personality differences, Roth leaving the band, as he did & at the height of their success, also deeply hurt Ed & Al...but they clearly found a way to move on. All they ever wanted to do, was to "play their music!" If it wasn't for Wolfgang, those reunion tours w/Roth would never have existed. It was purely by his suggestion & Wolf made the initial call to Roth. That ought to tell you how deep that animosity was. How wonderful it was to see them come full circle...even if Roth could no longer sing!
..as much as I like Sammy's earlier work with Van Halen, Montrose, and solo, it may sound crazy, but I think Sammy's voice was at it's peak here, on this album, during this period...just powerful, strong....you can hear it on "Humans Being" also...I have always imagined what "Fire In The Hole" on VH III would have sounded like with Sammy singing it....
I grew up on old VH, but I liked the Hagar-VH years as well.It was a great body of work.I was hoping for one more Van Hagar tour but it doesn't look like it will happen.I saw the ill-fated 2004 tour, and it was pretty good but you could tell Ed was in bad shape.I saw the 10th or so show, so it hadn`t come off the rails yet.

It's strange. Balance and humans being was the only stuff which i liked from the sammy-era. For sure, there were some songs i liked (WCTBL, Dreams, Runaround, Right Now) too but it was balance, that split off the cheesy sound from the late 80s into a very dirty tone. Especially ed's musicman guitar sounds impressive on that album. I'm grateful for ADKOT (love this stuff so much...except the awful mastering) and the return of diamond dave but balance will always be a special record for me.
Sammy hated the negative connotation that Don't Tell Me brought. The song was originally going to be "Let me tell you what love can do. ' Eddie was busy hanging out with Jerry Cantrell though lol.
Balance is a great album but wow you can sense the tension coming off of Eddie here, especially towards Sam. Eddie’s not really happy here and when Sam jokes about not getting his way, Eddie is stone faced. Very different vibe from just two years earlier. It only got worse after the tour.
In hindsight, there was nothing "Bad" about this album but it came out during the peak of Grunge and Alt Rock. Van Halen was seen as the "old guard" whose musical dominance of the airwaves was over. After that was the Chaotic period where they fired Sammy- got Dave back for the greatest hits compilation "Me Wise Magic" and then did the album with the singer from Extreme. Also, this is a departure for Eddie who cut off his hair and began using the Ernie Ball Axis as his main guitar- retiring his old Frankenstein guitar.
Thank God grunge came along and put shit like this to bed. And "Me Wise Magic" was the best thing they had done since the original departure of Dave Roth.
...yeah, I wish it had come out earlier..if they had been pumping out albums at the rate they did with the early-mid Roth stuff, we would have had more great Hagar-era music...5150 came out in early 1986...then if 0U812 had come out in mid-1987, Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in late 1988-early 1989... Balance in 1991 or early 1992...then we could have still gotten in a couple more albums while they were still in their prime....
Getting this line up again would be great for the Rock scene , Hypothetically if they would put out a new CD/ include a world tour,that Would be completely against the odds But as we all know now Thats when Van Fuckn Halen Shines...
I have to say Gary Cherone is also a great singer, one album wasn't much of a chance. Van Halen was on a different level with Sammy, more mature than with Dave. Deeper lyrics. First time I heard this, I received this as part of a music club. Love at first listen!
03:27 Get those tape boxes and start releasing some of that great unreleased music. It is widely known that VH way overcut for almost every record they made, including this one. VH recorded something like 17 tunes for Balance (1 of which got turned into "Can't Get This Stuff No More."). Very few great bands at their level have yet to put out an album of unreleased songs. And when you record than many, there are bound to be enough to create a great 15 song record. I mean, Eddie said in a guitar magazine that there were 3 tunes that were cut from F.U.C.K. that he felt were better than "Top Of The World."

In terms of sound I think it has the best production of every album Sammy Hagar was a singer of! Can't say I love every track on the album but most of them. Shame they split up after this one. If they would have kept their health and not turn around to "what's going on right now" I think they could have done some more quite good stuff!
Eddie just had a different demeanor around this time. You can tell he's different. He always was kid like along with the rest of the band. He seems more all business around this time. Rest of the band seems the same, but you don't see the same glimmer in the eyes they all had during the previous 3 albums either. I think Ed stopped having as much fun and therefor rest of band wasn't either.
He was sober at this point which may have been a big thing. You change when you sober up and all the people you partied with all tell you "ah man youre not as fun as you used to be!" but the quality of your life is a hell of alot higher.

Substance abuse puts you in a time vacuum, you dont mentally grow when you abuse drugs/alchohol. If you start on the drugs when youre 20 years old and do drugs for 15 years old then even though youre 35 years old, in your head you are 20 years old and i think thats how it was for Eddie. So then circa 1995 he gets sober and hes actually acting like a 45 year old guy instead of like an 18 year old. Thats just my take.

Most of that is from Sammy, but Sammy is as easy going as it gets and he knew Ed for 10 years before this and he said Ed changed during this period and was not a joy to be around. You're personality doesn't change because ur an adult, it changes based on life or substance factors.

I know I'm 4 years late to this party but I just came across this video and you're right....damnit I miss this line-up. I'd say it'll never happen but maybe one day...hell, The VH brothers said a DLR reunion would never happen and look! Sammy....though....Sammy took them to another/different place. All props to both SH and DLR cause at the end of the day, the fans got the benefit of both frontmen's talent. Love DLR period and Sammy period...Sammy was during my high school years so the songs mean more to me, personally.

Balance is a really underrated album, for the time period it came out with grunge music at the top it’s not bad at all
VH is one of the few 80s /late 70s band that did and could have lived three the 90s

Ed was supposedly “sober.” Of course, Ed is an alcoholic. So by that point he was such a mess internally. A few years later he would be completely off the wagon yet again.

Contrary to Sam's book of lies , it was all Sam's fault with his big mouth . In a Van Halen compilation you can see Sam in a backstage section of an arena saying " This is MY band ." His own words . And right after he says " Lead singer of the band leader of the band what's the difference ?" Again , his own words . Whatever happened he said something that really pissed Eddie off .

I will always love this album. It's true - around this time there were tensions, especially between ed and sam. For me “balance“ was a special record. The sound was darker and that's what i liked. Eddies tone was awesome and it's no surprise that the musicman-evh-guitar is so legendary. To be honest, i prefer the facelift for the body (peavey/evh wolfgang) because it's less chunky and more snazzy. Otherwise the tone from evh/axis was timeless.
Back to “balance“. When i start to play guitar in 1994, i only knew jump, but didn't know the band. The first big name i was impressed for was brian may. I remember 1995 - i watched the pensacola-footage from the balance-tour at mtv...and that was the first time i really noticed ed. From this point, he was my hendrix and although i like so many guitar players (lukather, vai, knopfler, gilmour, govan, stevens), ed was/is the most important from all. By the way: Later i was wondering when i watched earlier videos and ed had wear long hair😂 For me, he was the “balance“-guy with short haircut and beard for a long time...
Of course i knew that he was ill but i wished so much that he'd win the battle. Now it's so strange. 50 years after jimi died, it's the second big innovator for guitar-abuse.
All i know is - ed will be missing but his musical influence will stay. A real guitar hero and it's nice to hear, that he and sam spoke again.

When my boy Sammy entered, no more cover tunes to fill the CD. DLR was awesome at the beginning but Sammy Hagar can hold his own on guitar, great singer/songwriter and can run the stage like no one else !!! DLR, Drunk and talk to much at every show I saw period.

Dan V the first album wasn't bad. I was around, it was original and had some chops and great sound. Didn't care for any if it after that. And I like Van Hager too, it's just really not to be compared. But amazing that Eddie and the boys had album after album with songs that struck a chord with people.
In reality, besides DLR 1st album and a few cool Montrose jams, those singers were much more lucky to be part of anything starting with Van

I loved Balance and i read a great comment in this comments section that said "Balance is how contemporary rock should sound".
The mixing and sound they got out of the drums, bass and Eddies guitar is just phenomenal. It would be a fucking stellar album if it wasnt for Cant Stop Loving You, that song was just milk toast shit, sorry.
People that bash this album also dont take into context at all how much rock n roll was in the trash can at this point. It was in a real bad place.
Albums arent created in vacuums, the hot things and trends at the time play a part in how that album will sound (like synthesizers in the 80s), rock was not the big sound in the mid 90s, pop, hip hop and rap were.
The mid and late 90s was all about Oasis, Alanis Morrisette, Toni Braxton, Hip Hop and gangster rap.
Rock was on the ropes and damn near dead but Van Halen was still rocking and their label needed some pop-ish hits which would explain the shit songs Not Enough and Cant Stop Loving You.
And for the people saying Eddie was all fucked up in this video, he was actually drinking Odouls non-alcheholic beer.
Guitar Player magazine put him on the cover and did a big article about his sobriety (and hair cut) in either 1995 or 1996 and he was sober in the 1995/1996 timeframe.
Balance was a great album but, as in this interview, Sammy was being pretty fucking unbearable and prima donna-ish and owned a big part of the split. Not saying at all that it was ALL on Hagar but when things go bad all the adults in the room have to own a slice of the shit-pie.

I think it was a mistake to not play in the Netherlands more, but what do I know, I'm a mere mortal. I really miss this lineup and wish these four would get back together.

Sammy's rant at 5.50 is actually him being deadly serious. It was him against Ed & Al at that time, with Mike going along with everything the brothers said.
The more I re-familiarize myself with all things Van Halen, & coming from a much older perspective at this time, I'm really un-impressed with Mike's inability to be his own man...regardless of the issues (in which they have completely opposite views on), or what side of the fence he eventually landed on. He may have attempted to avoid conflict, by playing this kind of wimpy ass, silent role, but it didn't' solve anything...so, in my opinion, he's equally to blame for the misunderstandings & discord between them.
The most disappointing example of this is hearing his IV about "How he's really bothered he & Ed never resolved some of their issues". So who's fault is that, Mike?! 100% Ed's? Hell no! How old are you now? How many years have gone by & you can't pick up the phone or knock on his door? You "know" he's sick, yet you continue to make no effort? That's Mike's fault, NOT Ed's, & he has to own that now. Because of Mike's inability to be a "grown-up", he never spoke to, or wrote to Ed before he died. Now he's gone & no one can fix it. It's a terrible tragedy between people who shared an enormous amount of incredible memories together...such a very sad waste of time, they ALL abused.
I had read, Ed texted to Sammy, towards the end, "Give my love to Mike". And when Sammy "finally" chose to reach out to Ed last year, Ed's first response was, "What took you so long?!". Their relationships, like it or not, that have been played out for the entire world to see, should be a very tough lesson for anyone paying attention.

@@ColtraneTaylor I have read recently from a very reliable source, "from Ed's perspective", after Sammy left, & Mike chose to go & play with him, that was Mike telling him he was done with Van Halen. It was "after" this time period, when Ed turned to his 15 yr old son Wolfgang, & asked him if he was interested in playing "for real" with the band. (As Wolf had been regularly practicing at home, for fun, w/his Dad & Uncle Al). Not the other way around, as has been widely reported, that Mike was dumped & replaced by Wolf. Ed was extremely hurt by what he perceived, as the facts on the ground, that Mike chose to leave the band & follow Sammy.
I have since read that Mike has claimed, "this was absolutely not true, that he never quit Van Halen, that he went to play w/Sammy simply out of boredom". At the time, Ed was at a real low point re his alcoholism (hence the trouble it caused w/Sammy) & had decided to take a long break from touring & recording. Now, this seems to be a reasonable thing to want to do, but considering the extreme tension Sammy's leaving had caused, & Ed's frame of mind, Mike didn't think it was appropriate to have a single conversation w/Ed & Al about this move, BEFORE he made it? To ensure everyone was on the same page? At the end of the day, "perceptions are everything", right or wrong. So it's prudent to actually speak to one another. This was on Mike to ensure where his loyalties remained, or not. To get Ed & Al's blessing, or not. Van Halen made Mike a VERY rich man, & that conversation was definitely owed to the group, before he went off to play one note with Sammy, "in particular", or anyone else, (outside of Van Halen).
It was also stated, what furthered the pain for Ed & Al, was when their Mother died, apparently Mike never reached out to them. Further building on the very bad feelings that had already been established. Mike was quite a grown up man at the point all these things went down...but apparently in age only, clearly not emotionally. I'm not at all implying Mike is not a nice guy, but he's sat back, all these yrs, & let Ed & Al be the bad guys in the scenario, & I think it's complete BS. His approach has been quite cowardly, in my opinion. He was equally responsible for their fracture & "misunderstandings" & should now find the maturity to admit it.

I feel the same as you when I hear these stories about Roth and Ed bullying him out of his share. I don't know about their tactics, but they were more than right to cut his share. Mike said sometime ago in a video, how he still feels like a teenager. I just think he's not a very intelligent person, almost a balance to the massive talent in that group. He's like a "failed" part in Eddie's dream, wasn't as perfect as he could have wished. It's not Mike's fault though, he's just not very clever, just an average guy.

While Ed & Al may not have handled rearranging Mike's contract, as well as they certainly could have, I believe it was completely within their right to do so. After many, many years of very hard work, w/Ed doing the majority of the work, (writing & arranging their music) Ed clearly felt Mike really had not "earned" the right to continue to make the same amount of money. Years go by, things change (or don't) & settle in. I honestly don't see that as being unreasonable. Had Mike seriously disagreed with this, pretty sure he would've told Ed & Al to F off & that would've been the end of it. Mike has 70 million in the bank, 100% because he was a part of "Van Halen".
Roth was always full of himself & obviously felt he could do better w/out Van Halen, which clearly proved to be incorrect. Regardless of their personality differences, Roth leaving the band, as he did & at the height of their success, also deeply hurt Ed & Al...but they clearly found a way to move on. All they ever wanted to do, was to "play their music!" If it wasn't for Wolfgang, those reunion tours w/Roth would never have existed. It was purely by his suggestion & Wolf made the initial call to Roth. That ought to tell you how deep that animosity was. How wonderful it was to see them come full circle...even if Roth could no longer sing!

I grew up on old VH, but I liked the Hagar-VH years as well.It was a great body of work.I was hoping for one more Van Hagar tour but it doesn't look like it will happen.I saw the ill-fated 2004 tour, and it was pretty good but you could tell Ed was in bad shape.I saw the 10th or so show, so it hadn`t come off the rails yet.

It's strange. Balance and humans being was the only stuff which i liked from the sammy-era. For sure, there were some songs i liked (WCTBL, Dreams, Runaround, Right Now) too but it was balance, that split off the cheesy sound from the late 80s into a very dirty tone. Especially ed's musicman guitar sounds impressive on that album.
I'm grateful for ADKOT (love this stuff so much...except the awful mastering) and the return of diamond dave but balance will always be a special record for me.

Balance is a great album but wow you can sense the tension coming off of Eddie here, especially towards Sam. Eddie’s not really happy here and when Sam jokes about not getting his way, Eddie is stone faced. Very different vibe from just two years earlier. It only got worse after the tour.

Why would VH need to release an EPK? The whole thing could be, hey, new VH album. Boom, done.
In hindsight, there was nothing "Bad" about this album but it came out during the peak of Grunge and Alt Rock. Van Halen was seen as the "old guard" whose musical dominance of the airwaves was over. After that was the Chaotic period where they fired Sammy- got Dave back for the greatest hits compilation "Me Wise Magic" and then did the album with the singer from Extreme. Also, this is a departure for Eddie who cut off his hair and began using the Ernie Ball Axis as his main guitar- retiring his old Frankenstein guitar.
Thank God grunge came along and put shit like this to bed. And "Me Wise Magic" was the best thing they had done since the original departure of Dave Roth.
Actually, he was using the Axis since For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. During the tour for Balance, he switched to Peavey Wolfgang.
...yeah, I wish it had come out earlier..if they had been pumping out albums at the rate they did with the early-mid Roth stuff, we would have had more great Hagar-era music...5150 came out in early 1986...then if 0U812 had come out in mid-1987, Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in late 1988-early 1989... Balance in 1991 or early 1992...then we could have still gotten in a couple more albums while they were still in their prime....

I have to say Gary Cherone is also a great singer, one album wasn't much of a chance. Van Halen was on a different level with Sammy, more mature than with Dave. Deeper lyrics. First time I heard this, I received this as part of a music club. Love at first listen!
03:27 Get those tape boxes and start releasing some of that great unreleased music. It is widely known that VH way overcut for almost every record they made, including this one. VH recorded something like 17 tunes for Balance (1 of which got turned into "Can't Get This Stuff No More."). Very few great bands at their level have yet to put out an album of unreleased songs. And when you record than many, there are bound to be enough to create a great 15 song record. I mean, Eddie said in a guitar magazine that there were 3 tunes that were cut from F.U.C.K. that he felt were better than "Top Of The World."

In terms of sound I think it has the best production of every album Sammy Hagar was a singer of! Can't say I love every track on the album but most of them. Shame they split up after this one. If they would have kept their health and not turn around to "what's going on right now" I think they could have done some more quite good stuff!

Eddie just had a different demeanor around this time. You can tell he's different. He always was kid like along with the rest of the band. He seems more all business around this time. Rest of the band seems the same, but you don't see the same glimmer in the eyes they all had during the previous 3 albums either. I think Ed stopped having as much fun and therefor rest of band wasn't either.
He was sober at this point which may have been a big thing. You change when you sober up and all the people you partied with all tell you "ah man youre not as fun as you used to be!" but the quality of your life is a hell of alot higher.

Substance abuse puts you in a time vacuum, you dont mentally grow when you abuse drugs/alchohol. If you start on the drugs when youre 20 years old and do drugs for 15 years old then even though youre 35 years old, in your head you are 20 years old and i think thats how it was for Eddie. So then circa 1995 he gets sober and hes actually acting like a 45 year old guy instead of like an 18 year old. Thats just my take.

Most of that is from Sammy, but Sammy is as easy going as it gets and he knew Ed for 10 years before this and he said Ed changed during this period and was not a joy to be around. You're personality doesn't change because ur an adult, it changes based on life or substance factors.

I know I'm 4 years late to this party but I just came across this video and you're right....damnit I miss this line-up. I'd say it'll never happen but maybe one day...hell, The VH brothers said a DLR reunion would never happen and look! Sammy....though....Sammy took them to another/different place. All props to both SH and DLR cause at the end of the day, the fans got the benefit of both frontmen's talent. Love DLR period and Sammy period...Sammy was during my high school years so the songs mean more to me, personally.
