    The difference in light after and before the sun hit the foreground was really amazing to see!
    Also while photographing the tree, I was paying attention to the wind movement and the narrow gap in which you exposed the photo felt like the tree was "posing" for a moment haha.
    The sea of mud cracks shot is wonderful too!!

      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Shashank! The light sure can change quite a bit down in those canyons, but once you know what you're looking for, you learn to anticipate it. It's such a wonderfully warm and soothing light. The wind often comes in waves so if you spend enough time waiting, there will often be a moment of calm, but it sure doesn't take much to make those cottonwood leaves flutter. Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Thanks Sam! It sure was wonderful how everything came together that evening with the wind calming and the clouds going away. It was also very fortunate that the huge cottonwood trunk snagged on the rock just upstream and wasn't in the foreground. It'll be interesting to see if that tree has moved once more when I return next year. I suspect it'll be many miles downstream. Thanks for watching and commenting Sam!

    A few years ago, i have read a book written by John B. Williams, "Image Clarity" and after watching this video many times and reading your answer to my earlier question, I need to confes I am probably to nervous about it. When the camera is firmly secured, its all o.k. The influence of the wind is with no doubt way more important.
    again, i have learned a lot and shall make a donation.
    Kind regards, Arie Bood The Netherlands.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Arie! Wind is a definite issue, and can indeed shake the camera if it's strong enough, but down in these canyons, the primary concern is the gentle breeze that rustles cottonwood leaves during a long exposure. In places such as Death Valley where the wind can be significant and shake the camera, I'll use my heavier tripod, secure it to the ground with a tether, and use an umbrella to shield the camera from the wind during the exposure. If all of that isn't enough, I figure it just wasn't meant to be.

    Superb images and day 2 video journal, Ben. The last image is superb so is the first one, thanks to the smiling dude. Have you switched to ball head?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Prashant! I use the ballhead only while backpacking to save both weight and size. For non-backpacking trips the cube is my first choice because of the geared movements and precise control, but I can emulate that a bit with the p0 ballhead by applying just a little bit of tension to the ballhead so that the camera position is malleable but won't slump over. As soon as I'm satsfied with the compostion, I tighten it down the rest of the way to lock it in place. This ballhead can support 44lbs which is quite impressive for the size. My 8x10 (without lens or film holder) weighs in at about 6.5lbs.

    Oh! well the tree between boulders photo has come out really nice and the stream of water has added some more element to it, may be you were not expecting it to be there ? I also liked the way you have composed the small rocks towards the left of the image.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks and I'm glad you've been enjoying the longer videos. The backpacking trips are very well suited for the longer format since I'm not working around any distractions (cars passing by on a nearby road, etc). It was nice to have a bit more water there this year. With how much the rest of the canyon had changed from the flash floods, I really had no clue of what to expect, but thankfully everything came together nicely. Thanks for watching and commenting Vishwas!

  • @ChristopherMay
    @ChristopherMay ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow. What a trio of images, Ben. I remember you mentioning your success with this trip on the podcast. It's fun to see just how well it worked out for you. Can't wait to see you continue the journey.
    A couple of quick questions I was wondering about:
    1) I know you've spent a lot of time decreasing weight in your bag for these trips and I know that you've tested the Reveni Spot Meter out. It looks like you're still using your Sekonic, though. Is there enough of a performance gap that you've decided to keep using the heavier Sekonic?
    2) I'm curious about your use of the warming filters in the field as opposed to color temperature adjustment in post-processing. Do you find that you get better results by using the filter in the field?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Christopher! The crazy thing about this trip was that I didn't expose very much film, but so many of the photos are portfolio worthy. You'll especially see that during the film reveal. It doesn't come without a cost though, as you'll see in episode 4. Although it was a productive trip, certain parts weren't the most enjoyable, but that's all part of the process.
      With regard to your questions, the Reveni spotmeter would indeed save a lot of weight. I have tried it side by side with my Sekonic and appears just as accurate. For me though, it all comes down to muscle memory. When I use my Seknoic, I don't have to think about anything. It's like playing a musical instrument, and I have complete trust in it. This is especially important when conditions are changing quickly and when I need to be decisive. Although the Reveni is indeed accurate, I haven't built up the muscle memory with it to trust it the same way I trust my Sekonic for those rapidly changing situations. If I spent a lot of time with it, I could certainly develop that muscle memory, but for me the Seknoic is tried and true.
      Warming filters are beneficial because they can do things that adjustments in post processing cannot. If it's only a subtle change, sure you can tweak things in photoshop, but when the blue cast is especially strong, trying to fix it in post processing results in a muddy image since so much of the color nuance is lost. The scenes I photographed this day could have gone without the filter and have been okay, but for scenes with an especially strong blue cast, I find the warming filter gives me a bit more color separation that allows me to better work with the file on the computer. I'm still trying to learn when to use the filter and when not to, and for those iffy situations I often shoot a photo with and without. My instinct is getting a bit better with time and practice.

  • @ariebood9238
    @ariebood9238 ปีที่แล้ว

    Maybe I am wrong, but the tripod head in use, seems of a different type now, probably in attempt to save weight? facing the size of the camera it looks slightly fragile to me.
    Very nice photos, especially the second, showing the curled structures formed by mud !.

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      You have a good eye. I use the Arca-Swiss p0 ballhead while backpacking to indeed save both weight and bulk. It might look small and wimpy, but don't let the appearance deceive you. It has a load capacity of 44lbs, and my camera weighs about 6.5 lbs without the lens and film holder. Although I prefer working with the cube because of the geared controls, you can emulate that a bit with this ballhead by applying just enough tension so that the camera position is malleable, then tighten down the rest of the way to lock it in place.

    As always awesome photos. Just one question, when you look thru your little hand view to frame a picture, how do you know what lens to use? And where can I get one myself?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Edwin! When it comes to the framing device, with a bit of practice, you quickly learn how far away to hold it from your face to represent different lenses. For example, when I tough it to the tip of my nose, it gives an accurate view of what my 240mm lens sees. If I hold it just a little further from that, it corresponds to my 300mm lens, then beyond that my 450mm and 600mm. After a while, you just get a feeling for it all. It's not especially useful for my wide angle lens though since I can't hold it close enough to represent that wide of a view. When I find a subject I like, looking through the framing device instantly allows me to see how the various subjects interact with each other, and allows me to quickly identify distracting subjects. It also gives me a good feeling for exactly where I should place my camera. You can buy them on Amazon for around $100. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/Color-Wheel-Artists-View-Catcher/dp/B001DKMZNG/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1JSV3MPE3GIHM&keywords=artists+view+catcher&qid=1691439044&sprefix=artists+view+catcher%2Caps%2C175&sr=8-1

    What a beautiful place. Pardon the uneducated question but does your film require refrigeration prior to use? Is that what limits the amount of film you bring?

    • @BenHorne
      @BenHorne  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Robert! The film does indeed need to be stored cold. I have a chest freezer in my garage for long term storage, but once you're in the field, keeping it that cold isn't a concern-you need to protect it from getting hot. Back at the trailhead, I parked my 4Runner at a favorable angle next to a large juniper tree. I store the film in a thermal-electric cooler that I have hooked up to a solar panel on the roof of my 4Runner. The solar panel doesn't provide enough energy to keep the film frigid, but it's enough to prevent it from getting too hot in the parked car.

      Thanks! It's a Tiffen 81B filter. Seems to work quite well with Provia.

      @@BenHorne got it, thanks. Have you used E100 enough by now that you feel it would also benefit from an 81B? Or do you only use it with Provia?

    the smell of death…
    next book title maybe???
    on a serious note, do you ever get frightened or nervous while in these remote areas?

      Good question. The idea of a carcass made me concerned about scavengers. I don’t know enough about the local fauna to know if that’s a concern.

      Ha! That would certainly make quite the book title. :-) When it comes to the concern of being far from people in some of these remote places, it honestly doesn't concern me very much since I know the biggest threats are from dehydration and mechanical injuries that result from doing stupid things (jumping down from rocks, etc). I do my best to state very hydrated, and avoid anything that seems sketchy. As an example, I was hoping to cross the river and check out the other canyon on the other side, but as soon as I saw how high the river was flowing, I immediately knew that wasn't an option. I also carry a satellite messenger so I have that connection back to the civilized world.

      In those areas, there are coyotes (though I haven't seen/heard them or seen their tracks), and there are definitely mountain lions (again, haven't seen them or their tracks), both of which don't really want to have anything to do with people. Last fall a friend of mine was backpacking into a canyon in the same region and found black bear tracks, which was surprising since this isn't really their habitat. I suspect the presence of that bear was more of a fluke than a regular occurrence. All in all, there really isn't much to be concerned with. The biggest threat is dehydration, and that's something you have control over.

    What did the guy with the 4x4 do to you that turned laid back Ben into a hooligan and let the air out of his tyres? 🤣
    Those two rocks are beautiful, great find, I'm sure I'd take the shot of the guy with the flat cap! Love the detail in the mud but that light on the boulders and tree even in the video was 😍 awesome result. One probably silly question, doesn't that scene scream portrait orientation? (Get me, questioning Ben 😳)

      Thanks Andrew! I'm sure to some passersby, seeing me let the air out of my tires might be a strange sight. They probably assume I'm crazy and just keep driving. :-). For that final scene with the tree, I'm sure a vertical composition would also work, but for me that photo is all bout the context of the environment surrounding the tree. The layered canyon walls, the boulders, etc. A vertical photo would eliminate much of that and might feel a bit tight, though I'm sure there is a vertical composition to be had there as well. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

      @@BenHorne thanks for the thoughtful reply, me not being there prevents me from seeing the "wider picture" so fully understand why you shot what you did. Besides, I've got to behave in case you let the air out of my tyres 😏

      Thank you as always for watching and commenting Martin! It sure is wonderful to spend time down in those canyons. It's a lot of work, but there is so much beauty in every direction.
