Michael Manley was indeed a visionary but I do not believe that he was a great strategist. He could have accomplished a whole lot more and remain in power for a much longer period of time had he paced himself. Anyway, I guess that he was constrained by the 5 year election cycles and the political and economic behemoth to the north.

Jaha Karto i am no authority on Manley as i was a child during his tenure. However, its quite clear that he pursued many social reform programmes all at the same time. However he did not put the same effort into attracting capital to expand the tax base.
Thats true. But conditions for 95% of Jamaicans were so bad when he came to power, he believed he could fix it in a short time. Mr White in Jamaica was adamant that no kid from the ghetto was going to sit in class beside junior white at Jamaica College, or Campion or Immaculate of Holy Childhood. So they, along with Seaga and his hench men, decided that if you black, step back, if you brown, stick around, and cause we white, we a keep it tight. Manley who is white, pushed back at them, and so they took their flight.

I see that some good strong leaders have emerged in Tanzania, Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda.
