Fact. The Mount used to be it's own town separated by the harbour from Tauranga. Eventually amalgamated with the city in the 80's making it a suburb. Not sure if it's still spoken but early in transition it used to be said.."Remember, when you're at the Mount, you're not in Tauranga " A local saying from a local.
Why was this video titled 'Do not try this in NZ'? When it turns out it's just quite simply a nice friendly tour of Mt Maunganui, Tauranga...? Yeah it's beautiful up there I did that walk too...
Another fantastic adventure mate-Thank you very much for showing us around-I really like your videos and am thankful for the constant updates-Gotta love NZ🌏
Love the Mount! I use to run up and down and around it for running training, when I use to be fit, haha. 😂 Gahhh, ya last couple of videos make me miss home a lot. This video has triggers so many great memories. 😊 Stunning views. Thanks for the nostalgia Curls. ❤ Bro! What a walk from the Mount to the airport! Good job! Haha. Safe travels and enjoy ya battered sausage and curry sauce! 😊
Moved away from here around 3 years ago, grew up here and never left until 3ish years ago. My bro still takes me for walks up the mount when he’s training and to see the rest of the mount through your video, I couldn’t be happier. Thanks bro hope you’re enjoying home ❤
Thanks bro for showing others that when you over stereotype a certain something how would you know until you find out for yourself..and by the way your pronouncing of Maori Language is awesome ..liked your slang vid it had me cracking up from beginning to the end because you hit on those to a tee 😂..still watching from a new sub all the best 👍
Not since the NIMBY's got all mad at everyone having fun. Was an excellent spot in the 90's and early 2000's. They still do stuff now, But it's no where near as good.
Mate welcome to my home town! Well I grew up there until the end of my teenage years. Glad you made it to the top of the Mount and met the grazing sheep 😂 I am sure the current locals would welcome you back with open arms anytime, short or long term! It’s definitely a holiday place. The population more than doubles during the summer holidays 🏖️
So when you come back to Mt Maunganui, be sure to visit Pilot Bay on one side, near the Mount, & the beach on the other side. This is quite unique. It is a tourist destination that does have a holiday feel about it. If you walked from Mount to the airport, then I know what you're saying. Great perseverance! See you next time! 😊❤
Come back in February. Stay the night bring your boardies have a swim or surf and then hit the restaurants and then a pub. One of the best places in NZ
should have popped down to Papamoa, 20mins down the strip or more with roadworks. further you got a nice settlement . te puke home of the kiwifruit. then onto maketu. down to matamata then further onto whakatane. happy for you to show the world these incredible towns and cities. safe travels curls
The only difference between this an an Aussie beach town is 1) a lack of people 2) a lack of a beach - you are not selling the place very well unless you are trying to promote shops.
at less you went up on her and enjoy that glory sunshine walk through the town thank you for exploring Mt Maunganui safe travels on your plane.. God Bless your a legend
I know it's the done thing these days but I appreciate not having dumb thumbnails and click bait titles like so many other youtubers. But I understand wanting more clicks and you do deserve them. Chur
I'm new to your channel, liking content though!! If you havnt already, you need to visit the naki! Mt taranaki puts the mount to shame! Theres only 2 places in the world where you can go from the snow to the surf in under an hour. And taranaki is 1 of them. It truly is a special place!
3:03 This use to be the old Mount movie theater, for a brief time it became an entertainment place with trampolines etc.. until late last year when it closed down.
My Great -Grandparents had a house in Mount Maunganui called 'Miranda' -the seaside village where they lived on the firth of Thames. In the 1970's I spent many a happy week or two down there with Grandparents and family, swimming at the beach, finding pipi's (small clams), and watching Johnny Weissmuller 'Tarzan ' movies from the 1930's. The rooms had that peculiar mothball and old linoleum smell. The beds had saggy woven spring-mesh under the soft mattresses. Loved the place. In the 1980's it became trendy with teenagers around the Xmas holidays, and there were lots of bands playing and excellent New Years parties.

I’ve always wanted to move to nz, but I hate spiders so much, how many have you seen in the 3-4 years you have lived there, and did you get a working visa to get there? Is the weather similar to UK? I find your videos so helpful!!!
I grew up at the Mount, occasionally you will see a "daddy long legs" spider and a few small jumping spiders, but nothing like those found in Australia. Plus no snakes. There is 1 species of venomous spiders but they are so rare I have never seen one and I'm 60 next year.
chur butha, The Reserve you see in 10:24 is called "Hopukiore" which was an ancient hanging ground for maori ppl not many ppl do know that but its also called mt drury after the man who killed a lot of maori ppl on the reserve
Less and less. Stray dogs often attack them and many small run holders give up due to the constant maulings. As a Kiwi this was a surprise they still have them close to a biggish town. . Probably to keep the kikuyu grass down to limit or prevent more fires like the one they had.
My hometown as of 7 years ago..... you missed the key factor.. Ocean Beach and the sheltered Pilot Bay.. OB is a world famoussurf beach, , but safe .. Pilot Bay is stunning.. sheltered, warm water. Andthe restauraantss andcafes are xlnt. ... now.. you're pie freak.. you didnt get out the Bethlehem 10kms north, for Patricks' Pies... 9 times NZ Supreme Award winner. Next ime, ccall me.. I'll take you there. LOL
Mount Te Aroha is another location to hike up, in its Native meaning, if you want to look it up, the Mountain to the West is not appropriate for TH-cam.
Call me a heathen, but I reckon I'd rather visit the Mount than go to Queenstown 😊 (Wanaka is much nicer than QT). Thanks for sharing your wee jolly with us
@angeladawn805 - Agreed - that makes two of us! The Mount seems to have been able to stop the usual AWFUL "tourist trap development" that you see in so many (formerly) nice places. Not so with Queenstown, from what I've seen, or many other "tourist trap" places around NZ like Rotorua (RotoVegas, it's often called now). Sooo many places (when they get all developed) become just like the place you're trying to *escape from!* That's sadly the case with Aussie's Gold Coast which seems to be nothing but massively-tall beachfront highrises now.
You have such a positive outlook on life and I'm so glad you're enjoying New Zealand and the gems we have to offer. Keep doing what you do brother
What an amazing comment thank you so much. Means the world to hear that, will keep going! ❤️

Glad you felt the welcome Embrace of Mount Maunganui my Dude 💚. It certainly is a BEAUTIFUL place ..

Just a correction. It's down to Matata not Matamata - that's in a different direction👍
I remember eating a maketu pie 20+ years ago, one of the best ever

Highly recommend Smart India. One of the best curries in NZ if you ask me.
Agreed, and Houser of Spice at Bethlehem is the other star in the region.
Agree 💯
Currey shops everywhere disgusting
SO.. er.. you dont like curry?.. dont eat it. Or is it darkpeople you dont like? @@cryptic979
Got to remember that for next time I get Indian
😮😮you went to copenheigan and got a regular coneee!!!! Now you have to go back. You got to get a waffel cone
My old hometown and I surely miss it. The Pizza Library has the BEST pizza ever. Although Sals in amazing too.
You should 100% come visit Whanganui! You might love it here!
what is there..the beach?
@@regnorse Yes, and roads, and a town, and tress, and life, and everything you need.
My wife and I had our honeymoon at the mount in 1983 courtesy of the wifes rich aunty who had a house there. Loved it there.
I love the Mount thanks Curls for reminding me to call in and stay next time I’m driving that way ❤
Perfect Māori pronunciation of "Maunganui" thank you !!!
Love that place! Thanks Curls
I've climbed the Kapiti Mt Maunganui. Does that count?
Haven't climbed that one though.
Nice one, Curls. So you found a baker and a candlestick maker, did you find a butcher too?
Jeffrey dahmer was a butcher...

Taranaki hard core and i am waiting for him to come to Taranaki as well as we have awesome beaches and some much other things to do
so what?.. its not a competition... unless freezzng your nuts off twice in one day is part of it..
Was just there last week, luv the mount
Love Mt Maunganui was just there last week 😊 love the seagulls lol
You should come visit Whangarei new Zealand, I would love to meet you and show you around
You're pretty much correct bro, optometrists check your eyes and opticians sell you glasses.
0:42 that is the Mount Mellick pub. 10:10 is Astrolabe, 2 of the very best bars in Mt Maunganui
You missed the best part of the mount-the best beach in Nz, stretches all the way down east coast
3:03 This use to be the old Mount movie theater, for a brief time it became an entertainment place with trampolines etc.. until late last year when it closed down.
I think, the messages on the ground.. read...Give us our car park back !!
Bro you should check out Waioru Then Ohakune then to an historic town called Raetihi if ain't already been there yet
Correct in your assertion about optometrist’s except I noticed in the uk they are interchangeable.
I remember many moons ago they use to pay a $1.00 to cross the bridge to go to Tauranga
Then it changed to being free after 11pm lol
@@Andrew_kiwi_AF lol
It was like that when I was a kid, one of those strange things I'm surprised to remember.
Was wondering when you would get to the icecream place. My sisters love that place.
hi from australia... thanks for sharing this video...
Love your content g
Mount Mellick is the pub with no name, enjoyed it. Smart India is delicious ♥️
welcome to town

Looks like you took the easy route up the Mount. Hard path is more fun an quicker.

New Zealand is probably the best place to live if you hate spiders lol.

You didn’t even show the beach, sure it has good shops and eateries, but the long beautiful surf beach IS Mount Maunganui.
Pizza library is good I been there before, you should try it
Best pizza I've had
Bruh this could've been part 2 of your Tauranga vid considering you're still in the same city. The Mount hasn't been a town for decades now.
this place looks like its only pumping during xmas/new years during music festival season
The way the locals like it!
Love love mt maunga. Ps they are cabbage trees :) they don’t grow coconuts on them.
I would hardly call this a mountain or a mountain town. More like a hill. . Try Te Aroha. You'll love it. May never want to leave
come to astrolabe for a burger and beer next time!
Thought you were looking for a chartered accountant at first
I’ve been there a few time’s back in the day. Good times
Did you get stuck in traffic trying to catch your flight?
Traffic there is abysmal
That’s an Irish pub we were there actually 😂
I used to walk up the Top of the Mount everyday after work with my old Army kit Pack and webbing 40 mins up 20 mins down
machine 👍
Well that certainly brings back memories, I spent some of my favourite moments in life there with my Boyfriend (now husband)
You need to invest some time in the deep south, if you could get to Rakiura, that'd be great 😊
You should try whakatane
Anna Stretton iconic NZ designer with a number of shops.
You go to Russell its quaint and idyllic try Hones for the best pizzas and pompalier cafe for great coffee and almond croissant
Yeah........go to Russel before the maoris have the name changed.
mad love and respect tho bro
I thought you were there for the Chartered Accountants 😂
The Mount caught fire a few years back, good to see the shrubs have grown back.
in regards to the bike those are called front forks.
11:43 well done! 🎉
Love to see ya one day!
"Loo, at it, isn't it beautiful?" 🤨wot? Chartered Accountants?😮😂

Everyone still there is a sheep, apart from the corrupt people.
Climbing the Mt the one thing I truly want to achieve
Have you ever done Rotorua??
you WALKED from mauao to the airport?!?! that's quite a feat. tauranga/mount maunganui would certainly lose a 'walkable city' competition
Waitoa is a small town in the Waikato
Go to the beach man!
Not sure what I should NOT try....can you re-cap?
That view was worth it.
Yep, I have
