Remove Ford Lug Nuts with Decorative Caps along with Plugging a Tire

  • Plugging a tire and dealing with the Ford’s lug nut decorative caps. I wanted to remove the wheel in reference to an air leak. Upon my surprise, the tire iron that came with the vehicle, Ford Escape, didn’t fit the lug nuts. I attempted to use a 4 way tire iron but was unsuccessful as well. Upon researching the issue on the internet, I discovered the problem is that the decorative cap on the lug nut expands where it makes the tire iron is unusable.
Some people have been able to pound the tire iron on the lug nut with the cap. I opted for getting a larger socket than the 19mm lug nut. I purchased a ½ inch drive socket that has a 19.5mm on one end and an 18.5mm on the other from Autozone. In order to use the socket you will need an extension due to the ½ inch square being located in the middle of the socket, so you can use either the 19.5mm or the 18.5mm. I did find that my lug nuts were expanded pretty good and required me to tap the socket with the hammer to get it started then I used a piece of wood along with the hammer to place the socket all the way on the lug nut. I did remove the decorative lug nut caps on three of the lug nuts. This however took way too long to remove them. I ended up purchasing new one piece lug nuts from Amazon. Keep in mind that if you have a different make of vehicle you may not have this issue. Also when purchasing new lug nuts please check your owner’s manual for the appropriate size and specification.
I used a standard plug kit that I have had. Once you find the hole you use the tool that resembles a file and insert that into the hole several times while twisting and turning it. You take a plug and thread it in the eyelet of the other tool. You then insert it into the tire approximately halfway down. With one motion you pull the tool out from the tire and the plug should be still in the tire. Check for leaks. If no leaks, cut off access plug.

Why there hasn't been a recall or class action lawsuit over these stupid lugnuts is beyond me. They literally took the most unbreakable thing on a car and made it breakable.

What I read was there was lawsuit in 2017 . Judge threw it out of court. Ford probably bought the judge.

Exactly!! The lawsuit should be worldwide 😂. Ford has same lug nuts in all countries. Most people when stranded on road are totally clueless how to open these stupid lug nuts.

I had my first flat in my new Ford C Max this morning. I didn't know what was going on as the tops of the nuts seemed loose and the wrench didn't fit snug. I can't believe such cheap, unserviceable parts are used for such vital components. I'm lucky it didn't happen on the road, or I'd be stranded. To add insult to injury, the cheapo wrench in the spare kit actually split when I tried to use it normally. A car costs 10s of thousands, how can they cut corners like this?! Thanks for your video; I will buy a new wrench and socket, and definitely a whole new set of lugs.

I ran into this issue on my expedition. Needless to say I'm pissed. It shouldn't be this hard to get a lug nut off. Piss poor job Ford.
I found using spray grease on lug nuts and socket before removing then helpful.
Makes it easier to get the lug nut out if the socket. I'm buying new lug nuts asap. Screw getting stuck on the side of the road with this crap!

Cost savings, think how many lugs nuts they buy from suppliers in a year's time. If they just saved a dime per nut that's a huge savings for them.

Ford isn't worried if customers buy replacement lug nuts from them, they just want the originals to last until the warranty expires. I bought a 2010 Fusion brand new and it had a lug nut or stud recall about 5 months after I bought it. It is all about cost to them.@@scottprange8028

I don’t have a 19.5. 19 on mine seemed to fit but needed to be a deep well. Found a deep 3/4 fit snug with little play.
I think the fits are gonna depend on how much expansion has happened in the cap.

BEFORE removing any lug nut, go to your neighborhood auto parts store & buy a 16 pack of new
solid steel, chromed lug nuts. Return home, remove the oem nuts & shit can them all. THEN,
install your new nutz & afterwards, your life will be a dream.
    ITEM2-
You dont need to remove the tire to plug it.
    1-Jack up the tire
2-Remove valve stem core (called a schrader valve) & release all air
    3-Remove the nail or whatever
4-Using the tool in the plug kit, punch thru the tire tread all the way & work the tool to clean the hole
5-Put a plug onto the installer tool & goop it up with tire cement from the kit
6-Work the plug into your hole leaving a little sticking out
7-Pull the tool out a little, twist it, push it in a little-repeat until tool comes out.
8-Trim the bit of plug sticking out.
    9-Re install schrader valve
    10-Air up tire
    11-Drop tire to the ground
12-Drive around block to ensure plug isnt going to let loose. If it does, go back to step1
(I've had tires I had to do 2 or 3 times to get it to take)
LAST-never leave home without your kit.
    DONE - GOOD JOB!!!
    !

    • @cheapjoker3321
      @cheapjoker3321  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Depends. Doesn’t the lug nuts have the decorative style covers? Whether you have 5 or 4 the issue here was the decorative caps that made it extremely difficult to remove.

@@cheapjoker3321 not 100% sure. When they put the new tires on they used a hammer on one of the lug nut spike. I believe it's called locking wheel nuts. And on its first oil change, when they rotated the tires that's when they added 2 nuts. One on each of the back

Anyone out there have any recommendations. Ford should be ashamed of themselves for this. Its certainly a safety issue that everyone needs to be aware about. Change them up and get rid of those garbage ones.

Not sure if the Lug Nuts on a Ford Escape would be compatible with F150, but I ordered mine from Amazon (DPAccessories 20 Chrome 12x1.5 closed end bulge acorn lug nuts cone seat 19mm Hex). I would check your owners manual to make sure you have the right size and kind.

I cut up some old Firemans hose for protection for the socket. I took a mini sledge hammer and eventually got the socket over the shredded chrome. Got the wheel off, but then my Jack failed and now my car is on the ground on that side probably cause I hit the socket so hard slightly rocking the car. (Cmax 2013) Lesson learned always put extra supports no matter what. Even for a quick job. I ordered the lowest profile jack. 2.75” height. just got a wait for it in the mail. Thanks for the video! 👍
