I pay little attention to the "critics". I love movies for the actual movie first. Picture quality and sound are simply icing on the cake.

I only own Master & Commander on DVD. I haven’t watched it in several year now. But, I do remember being impressed by it. I hope Sony can twist the arm of Disney to get that out on 4K! Such an amazing movie! :)

The big problem is that you know that the film companies can make better transfers and because of laziness/financial reasons they are very careless with the 4k releases. When you see how amazing some older movies are in picture and sound but then the same studio releases other movies that are almost always the best version of the movie but still not made with love and care. Missed opportunity I would say.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on Master and Commander. Ive never seen a dvd best a bluray in my system, but i believe you! Sometimes theres some magic going on with our systems. I made a recording from FM radio of a Smashing Pumpkins concert from 2000. Burned it to cd, and to this day, i swear ive never heard a better sounding live concert. Sometimes is magic. Cheers broseph.

I think projectors are more forgiving with 4k. Tvs can just give so much detail that it's easier to nit pick. For me I look more for sound quality and bonus material than video quality these days.

Thanks for the video Chris. I think we are all critics to an extent but the truth is if your interested in a movie your gonna watch it regardless of the quality most 4k movies are the best version so I say it is what it is. I am still using an Epson Home Cinema 2350 and I use a 4k player and can see a noticeable difference from bluray disc's. I am waiting for 4k projectors pricing to come down before I buy one.

Its fine if you feel this way, but I disagree. If I'm going to spend upwards of $40 on a movie, i want jt to be an "archival" quality with the best picture and audio possible. There are some movies (like the Greatest Showman or Ready Player One) that I probably wouldn't have bought on 4k if they weren't top-quality transfers. There are others (Like Terminator 2 or Pirates of the Caribbean) where I love the movie and would love to buy a 4k copy, but don't want to spend my hard earned money on a disappointing disc. I vote with my wallet. You all can too.

Interesting topic. I do think people online can have a tendency to trash things just bc they like to complain and put people down. I see that all over the place. Reviewers on the other hand, it's kind of their job. If everything is just good then what's the point? Some things are subjective and some things are definitely objective, but even the objective stuff is subjective in that not everyone cares about or notices those issues. But I dont think it's a big deal for reviewers to be critical. A lot of people may find it helpful and useful info, and it's also good to hold the studios to a higher standard. On the flip side if you're someone who really doesnt care about color grading changes, DNR, and any other effects that change the overall look of the movie then you can just purchase knowing you'll be happy with what you bought. Also, some people love collecting and want to buy as much as they can and others try to pick and choose for one reason or another. Overall I think most of it comes from a good place besides the people who trash things just because they enjoy it.

I’m with you on the complaining from most of the review ch.s! Terminator 2 was one I avoided for years because most if not all reviews said people looked like candles (waxy). A lot of reviews knocked lord of the rings. For me they looked really good. I’m definitely into the sound. When that falls short I’m really bummed. Anyway it’s nice to hear someone break from the majority.

As far as I'm concerned, people don't take into account the cost, effort and time that goes into restoration. They expect ecery catalogue release to look natural, yet at the same time brand new.
Just to pick a few examples from my formative movie watching years, Predator, Die Hard, The Goonies, Ghostbusters. These films, no matter what happens, will never look sharp and clear and impressive. There are limitations we have to accept. Would i like a Carlito's Way that looks like it was shot in 2024? No! Because it wasn't!

I got Footloose on 4K and enjoyed it. Fun 80s movie! Later I thought I'd watch some reviews on the transfer and it got bad reviews. Huh! I'm still keeping it. And it's technically the best transfer of it yet. I love the idea of 4K, cause it can nearly capture the picture that the filmmakers originally captured on 35mm film. But, unless you have a copy of an actual 35mm film reel, none of us can say if it's accurate. There are specific popular movies that get people complaining, saying the studio did this or that to it after scanning it. But all these people are going off of their memory or just regurgitating what others say online. The film reel is the source of truth and we don't have access to it. Then there's the folks going crazy about James Cameron's movies. I don't get it. They love his movies, but are trash talking him like he's an awful person who doesn't care. I can understand the passion, but if you're gonna spread ideas about someone and their product, at least have some sources to back up what you're saying. I can accept a negative review of a lousy or mediocre transfer. I'll decide from there if I want the 4K or keep my blu ray. But I can't stand people saying things that are not true or they just can't prove it... Well, that's all for now. Have a great weekend!

Ive never gotten over how neutered the lightsabers sound in Revenge of the Sith bluray and 4k disc. That is the worst sounding star wars movie for home theater. But its still good. Thats the point. Even a mediocre release is way better than the best vhs or dvd release. Dvd depending on the player was an upgrade from vhs, but still flawed. 4k is great, but if bluray was the final disc format, id still be happy. Cheers all.

Are we critical of something I pay money for? Let me see, my steak was overcooked, am I too critical or do I send it back? My brand new car has a weird wheel wobble, do I not take it back to the dealer? My brand new TV has a bunch of stuck pixels, do I not request a new TV?
