    When someone asks me how long it takes to make my mugs. I always say 20 years because my first ones don’t look anything like what I’m doing now.

    You are selling yourself short. You are fast, but time is just one element. Your knowledge, skill and creativity are so much more important. Great job.

    This was a great video. I don't think I've ever seen someone time the entire process from start to finish. Very interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing.

    Awesome video! I only wish at some point in the future I can be this fast.

      Thank you so much! Honestly it just takes repetition and locking in your processes. It also helps that I made thousands of mugs this year haha. This years goal is 10,000

    This was really interesting for me as a craft potter who sells only a couple times a year. You are definitely a production potter which is so much different and you pride yourself on your speed and accuracy. I believe that even a production potter could easily double the time if he figures in his design time, studio setup, maintaining supplies, mixing glazes etc. etc. The buyer will never understand the true value of what they are getting in a hand made item whether it's a pot, a quilt, a sweater etc.

      Thanks! Yeah the impossible to quantify “transition time” is what gets me. Moving between tasks. That’s the main reason I try to work in batches of 25-50 because I lose a lot less time switching between the steps. I just get distracted too easy haha

    As a handbuilder I have to say this is soo fast! Lol I wish soo badly it didn’t take me so long to make a mug! Depending on how many mugs I make at a time, I can only make up to 4 at a time or the clay dries to much. It takes a little over an hour to make each one. Then the babysitting begins. Of course hand built pots take a long time to dry. My guess is 22 minutes! Wow 13 1/2!!! That’s amazing!! I thought you would include the firing but I guess that’s the kiln doing the work. Great video and really informative!

    • @BeardedPottery
      @BeardedPottery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I tried to mention how long the firing took. Not sure if i cut it out by accident haha. But yeah the kiln is a whole different element. I think another time test would be start to finish. It’s normally about 2 weeks. I should have said that.
      And you’re right hand built mugs take a long long time. And I think people always assume the opposite

      @@BeardedPottery Thanks for your response. When you had several different times just take the middle time. I hand glaze as well so that takes forever, obviously, especially when layering glazes!!

    Very interesting. I would have included drying time (for bisque) and kiln time. They are part of the making process and takes the most time. People need to know that.

    Great video! One thing you didn't touch on was how many years of honing your skill until you could make a mug that fast. 😀

      Me either! Yeah transitions are hard cuz a lot of them are me leaving haha. Let the kiln fire over night and come back the next day at lunch

    So wait, are you just using regular ink to stamp the bottom of each mug?? And it doesn't burn off? MIND BLOWN

    • @BeardedPottery
      @BeardedPottery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, sorry I forgot to mention it’s an underglaze stamp pad. Regular ink definitely would burn off unless it was really really heavy in iron.

  • @travismaxwell9805

    A friend of mine who is a pro can make 20 mugs in 2 hours. This includes throwing, pulling and attaching handles and glazing. We single fire with wood and salt glaze. The only thing he does not do is wad the bottoms due to risk of contamination. When I start thinking I am getting good enough to quit the day job, I think of that.

    How or who makes your stamps. They’re really clean. I use a laser engraver to make them, just seeing if there’s a better option.

    I am guessing about 45 minutes to one hour as I hand glaze.

    • @BeardedPottery
      @BeardedPottery  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By hand glaze do you mean you brush the glaze on? Yeah people underestimate how much longer that takes. I’ve done it a couple times and every time I’m like “wow I forgot how long this takes” haha

      @@BeardedPottery yes, hand paint two layers each color. Also need to add another five minutes or so for Sanding pre and post bisque as my clay has heavy grog. Much slower, but still having fun making pottery

    How do you not go out of business making so little volume? Production potters can push out 300-500 12oz mugs per week. The shape also tends to be more consistent too.

    • @BeardedPottery
      @BeardedPottery  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can throw 100 mugs a day. When I make the mugs for breweries they all look just alike. The size is exactly the same because they use them in the breweries so they want to have consistent pours.
      I had some injuries and other things that made me unable to work. The first few months of the year are the slowest part of the year for me. And when you’re doing the whole production mugs take longer. Most production potters are glazing their own work or involved in all the other steps.

    Adding all the "dead" time between each effort likely double the time. It would be a dream to match your time I am afraid I am about an hour per mug.... Throwing 6 minutes...

    It takes 4 years, one month and 15 minutes to make a mug. lol 4 years of experience, one month of kiln turn around time and 15 minutes of making. Then if you are like me there's 3 to 20 hours of decorating work.

  • @maestasify

    This is ridulous. To" make" a mug from start to finish includes all the prep and clean-up, drying is part of this, vacuuming the kiln of all the blown-up pieces, and a myiriad of other obligatory chores. To get the mug to market is part of this. Selling your mug is part of this. Schmoozing the clients is part of this. How much does your mug cost? Mugs are now going for about $50, retail. I think that is decent.
