This looks like a fake game that's on in the background of a movie or something, where they want to show a kid playing a video game, but don't want to actually pay anyone, so they have some effects artist make a fake game in like 20 minutes
The MMO playerbase have been targeted hard by these scams to the point I have to wonder if they still have any trust left in them, or if kickstarter have already milked all of it.
it's probably because they are the most expensive as you said.. if they can soak a lot of money and run with it (I assume that's their master plan) then why not ? if youre making a shit RTS in flash and ask for 500k people will laugh but if you ask for 500k for a mmo they think they that's reasonably cheap maybe this will be the one

Imagine a COD with a monthly sub AND paid dlc AND a cosmetics cash shop AND a “qualify of life” cash shop. Gamers who like shooters would never go for it. Hence why a lot of shooters are free to play. For a shooter to be successful it’s either buy to play with minimal or no micro transactions or free to play with a lot of micro transactions.
Not that expensive when you literally don't do anything that even starts them and just ask for the money to start making them. Don't give anyone money. These morons should be working at Walmart not making "games".
I'm also developing a new MMO. It's going to be filled with dragons and spaceships, just as soon as I learn to code and hire a few loser friends to occasionally work on it during their free time. Most of these "indie" devs aren't the indie devs most people think of, though. The vast majority are just parasites offsetting lack of actual game dev talent / interest onto a skeleton provided by Unity, Unreal, etc. and their asset stores, with 95%+ of the effort put into attracting crypto-bros to drive anything resembling interest. None of this is about gaming, only crypto/blockchain profiteering. Will be little different once the corpos get into full exploitation mode. They'll put more money and actual game dev talent into it, but the purpose will never change.

God the heavily inspired RuneScape HUD design is giving me a panic attack, I recognize it but I also see what’s wrong. I still have no idea why all of the sudden people or groups think they can just hammer out a MMO with practically no research into the budget and the sheer dedication and passion from the players for it.
It's like watching a highschooler finish 1 entry level shop class and deciding to launch a new brand of electric automobile to compete with Tesla. It boggles my mind that kids (to me anyone college age or younger is still a kid) think this stuff is easy. And it has to be a kid, right? Then tell him that there's another list with undocumented stuff that's probably longer than that. And *another* one, of stuff that will be fixed in next weeks. And probably a fourth one, of things that worked fine but got broken with the last patch and no one has any idea why. That's the reality of MMOs - there's always something broken and it needs to be fixed if you want people to keep playing (and paying). And before the actual release, you'll be doing that within limited budget, no matter the actual costs.
It is absolutely possible for small team to make a MMO, although they always aim to compete with existing games like runescape or wow. Small-ish mmos should be niche.

This game is made in Unity with an MMORPG asset called Atavism. Its basically a framework where you get the entire back end with databases, authentication server and world server. I made a game similar to this in under 2 weeks with no prior experience in mmo game development.

As a developer also, this is clearly a Unity install with the uMMORPG asset (a bare bones mmo project to get someone started) with not really a lot changed on it other than a little art work and some ui elements (some I saw look like the stock asset art). Whilst it is certainly possible to make a game from that baseline, he is still very close to that. This to me; implies he is either very naive in how much more of a game he should really have before starting a kickstarter... Or has used the asset to make something to 'prove' there is a game for those that do not know better.
He asks for $20,000, but Kickstarter converts it to your local currency. It shows €17,468 for me. That's also why it seems like 1 backer backed no money. Kickstarter rounds the money down.

As a developer also, this is clearly a Unity install with the uMMORPG asset (a bare bones mmo project to get someone started) with not really a lot changed on it other than a little art work and some ui elements (some I saw look like the stock asset art). Whilst it is certainly possible to make a game from that baseline, he is still very close to that. This to me; implies he is either very naive in how much more of a game he should really have before starting a kickstarter... Or has used the asset to make something to 'prove' there is a game for those that do not know better.

Literally all he has is the uMMORPG asset from the unity asset store and a some addons as well as a couple monster models that he found somewhere. He hasn't coded anything himself. Not to mention uMMORPG was in a humble bundle 2-3 years ago.
