    New Year. New(ish) Office. New Editing Software.
    That last part caused some issues delaying this video's launch, DaVinci Resolve gave some trouble during rendering. But work's gone into
    revising Patreon, building a better work environment, and the next video, which is already being written as all footage is captured. I played a lot of NFS: Heat during the Holidays.

    The older and busier I've become, the less I want to sink 300 hours into one single game. Having a child really impacts the time I can spend on something and I've lost all patience for grinding and doing busywork in games for a perceived reward like a skin or unlock. I love when games trim the fat and give me an amazing time all of the time.

      i appreciate games that have a style that makes me want to keep playing - i don't want only that as what every game is, but some infinity services **are** quite appealing to me, and make me want to play them for thousands of hours.
      but yeah, other games are good too - my favorite games **have** been mostly indie or midbudget entries that didn't go forever but i think the style was just as important as the limited length in those titles as to my longterm enjoyment even after i stop playing.
      but sometimes a game just makes me want to play it 'forever', eh? not that anybody has the time to do that, but wanting to because of enjoying the Gameplay that much.

    "Being 4 hours isn't a negative."
    I wish more companies understood this. I will spend money on a game like DOOM 2016, because I know it's going to be a game that is balls to the wall ripping and tearing for a few hours, and then end. Sure, maybe I'll play it again, but maybe not.
    I will not spend money on a game like The Division, or Destiny, because I don't want a time sink. I want a fantastic game. I already have enough time sinks as it is.
    Edit: To clarify, I don't mean I'd rather spend $60 on a 4 hour game, but I'd rather buy an indie/non-AAA game for like

    • @joelmorder9780
      @joelmorder9780 4 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      I think it does matter to some degree. Especially if you pay a full 60 dollars for the game. At some point quantity does matter.
      Yes I would rather play a good 4 hour game over an 8 hour one. But if I have only money for one game and my choice is a 10/10 4 hour or 8/10 long game with replayability I’ll pick the longer game. But that’s just me.

      It's not a company thing tho. It's gamer thing. "Game is only X hours" is such a common complaint that I'm not surprised big companies would rather make filler content to stretch gameplay time.
      Even I am guilty of that, despite being conscious that shorter game doesn't mean bad, I often stop myself from buying one because "oh it's so short but so expensive, I rather buy something else".

    "4 hours isn't a negative." After hearing this video in full, yeah I understand your reasoning very much. What matters is the fulfilment I received while playing. RE2 remake isn't that long on a second or third playthrough, but because it hooked me on its' setting, characters, and gameplay(survival horror fan), I got way more longevity out of it than a typical looter shooter, or open-world grind fest. Thanks Ray, you put the words to my thoughts yet again.

    • @cattysplat
      @cattysplat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Enemy encounters and ammo amounts in RE2 can also be seen as somewhat random too, it keeps the moment to moment gaming exciting instead of rote grinding. The hidden dynamic difficulty in play and random zombie health and movement behaviour makes each playthrough and encounter unexpectedly challenging even when you thought you've mastered movement and aiming, the enemies keep surprising you unlike most games where enemy behaviour is quickly learned and exploited in every fight. We're likely going to see even more of this in RE3 with Nemesis being much more unpredictable and aggressive compared to the relatively forgiving Mr X.

    I figure this is a good time to share a personal story, since it's something very much related to this topic.
    Back when I was going through the Trails in the Sky trilogy, I was mesmerized, and when it was over, I was all but done with it. I didn't leave wanting more, but I didn't leave wishing it was over sooner either. I left it wanting to share it, and it became a game for me I dread playing through again on my own, but streamed for others several times. I find the best games, once you're done with them yourself, you still can't help but want to experience it again with others. That the simple act of sharing it with another person and seeing how they react and respond to its highs and lows becomes enough to reinvigorate it entirely. I'll never pick up Trails in the Sky again for myself, but I know I'll make more saves just because I can share it with others who won't buy it for themselves, and that's praise I can't say about very many games. I doubt I'll ever go back to A Link to the Past or Final Fantasy 7 or any number of classic games heralded as greats of their era, but the act of sharing them with others seems to give them a new flavor entirely, as seen with the resurgence of LttP content and hype in the wake of a new way to play it with others.

But nothing's better than playing something truly worth remembering. It's among the greatest joys in the world to me.

    It's great that you covered many different aspects of the market here, including F2P and multiplayer games, because I believe this has a huge impact on game length. The significant mainstream growth of multiplayer - along with massive budgets and player expectations - mean that a lot of these experiences in the last decade are now designed with a particular interest in hooking players long-term. As a result, I think many expect single-player games at the same price-point to occupy an equal measure of their day-to-day lives. That being said, the 'Over X hours' marketing line has been used before games-as-a-service became so prevalant, so perhaps this is a coincidence.
    Also, there have been some absolutely wonderful edits tied with music in both this, and your MW Years Later! It gives me an incentive to go back and watch parts again just to catch certain transitions or effects.

He goes over things like weapon handling, impact, sound effects and the like, I remember that one of his videos was on Metro, but I can't for the life of me remember his channel name.
    Oh and Raycevick, if you really want to be left wanting more as a viewer, you HAVE to check out Ahoy. His upload schedule may be akin to that of Valve's but man are his videos perfection. • @AbbreviatedReviews

    This is one reason I'm into indie and small developer games. Innovation is a requirement because without it, their games wouldn't rise above the overpopulated baseline. They often can't be long because they don't have the means or will to stretch interesting mechanics past the point that they become mundane. I'll always have more fun in a game that wraps up succinctly in less than 10 hours of great gameplay and story than I will a game that drags itself to 30+ without comparable value.
    The issue in mainstream game development is that some publishers now want everything monetized perpetually. Bethesda is particularly egregious as we've seen with recent releases. They expect a game to draw in a long term audience in order to sell them a season pass and microtransactions. Youngblood is the way it is because of that "Gold Bars" purchase option. Had it been better received, it most likely would have gone even further.

    Thank you, thank you , thank you, THANK YOU! At the risk of sounding like a typical nostalgia junkie, it is sad that "X amount of hours played" is somehow indicative of overall quality these days.
    POP: Sands of Time is barely ten hours in playtime and it is STILL one of the most moving games I've experienced. No NG+ (I think?), no "postgame khantent" that people seem to demand be in every title. You play the game, progress through the levels, then you finish it. Wanna play it again? Go right ahead. Enjoyed your time with it but want to move on? That's fine too.
    But industry standards seems to have swallowed these kinds of games up. It's kind of sad, really.

    This really hit home because for the last two years I've bought more games than I can even begin to play. Growing up, getting a game was a rarity; it was something my parents did on at least a 4-5 month basis. This really let me soak in all the games I played as a kid and a teenager. This experience left me thankful and eager to soak up as much of the next new game I could.
    But, sure enough, once I was on my own and could buy my own games and consoles at will, I binged hard. I bought hundreds of games for at least a dozen consoles/handhelds/PC with the unhealthy mindset of 'making up for all the games I didn't get to play as a kid'. Little did I know this would leave me with a bloated library of titles across multiple platforms that will likely remain unplayed for many, many years to come.
    Only recently have I slowed down in my frenzy to acquire title after title. I've begun the honest effort to sit and work on my library. I want to enjoy a game to its fullest, and once I feel content, I want to be able to look forward the next game I play just like I did in my younger years.

    • @trapatron2217
      @trapatron2217 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @bjamin30 Yeah, for the most part. It's still hard to pass up buying cheap games on sale, but the hardest part is stopping myself from buying the new games that come out (they all look so good). What helped the most was deleting all of my digital games except for maybe 3-5 of them. This way I stop myself from getting frustrated over what game to play. I had to kind of force myself to stick with one game, but past the 2 hour mark I start getting invested again.

    • @trapatron2217

      @bjamin30 I know just what you mean. I actually bought borderlands 3 with the exact same mindset. I also picked up the outer worlds because I loved new vegas growing up, but it's been sitting in my library for months unplayed. Been playing the persona titles steadily and even finished persona 4. JRPG grinding has actually been the closest thing to something I know I love that I've found recently.

    Another great video, Raycevick. You never disappoint.
    My take on YOUNGBLOOD was that it's a generally enjoyable fps (I was able to get the game at a duscount at launch). Despite it's notable flaws (specifically those at launch that were soon patched and fixed), it delivered flatout fun gunplay, challenge and the way you were able to upgrade and customize weapons was pretty cool. I thought it was a solid game. I actually enjoyed the Terror Twins' juvenile antics, specifically because they were juveniles themselves, which for the the life of me, I could not understand why people didn't get that.
    People were so up in arms against this game when it released, you'd think Youngblood murdered someone's puppy with the hatred it was receiving, especially when alot of the complaints were downright unreasoanble. The problem I had with Youngblood's detractors was that alot of them hadn't even played the game, yet agreeing with and spreading the false narrative that the game was crap.
    I literally spoke with tons of people in the comment sections of various channels covering the game, and they outright admitted they never touched the game and only watched video reviews if it, yet they were dictating to ME why the game sucked. Those who claimed to have played the game were grossly overexaggerating, or totally blowing out of proportion, the issues the game did have while ignoring or outright denying any of the game's strengths, to the point that it became absurd just talking to them.
    I'm all for shitting on a game if it is indeed packed with bullshit, especially at launch, but I'd never jump on a hate bandwagon against it, not unless I could verify it's shittiness from my own direct experience playing it.

      Really? I haven't seen much of that critique online, and even as such, I very much disagree with it.

Meanwhile, Old Blood is far more gameplay driven, and the handful of moments control is taken away from the player, it's still all told through BJ's eyes. I have played "The Witcher 3" on Deathmarch difficulty back in 2017 and completed just the vanilla version of it before touching the DLC. I started a full completionist play through of the Witcher 3 including it's DLCs at the end of 2019. As of today, I have cleared out every point of interest, quests, side quests, treasure hunts in all the maps except the for Toussaint, Blood & Wine (the final DLC's map).
    As I log in and do whatever goal I have given my timeframe on my schedule, I begin to feel bittersweet. Every time I ride with my horse and see the beautiful endless vineyards and distant castles of Toussaint, I hear the ambient soundtrack of Blood & Wine. Maybe it's because I spent over 500 hours of the game with incredible moments and experience I never got anywhere from a video game, and realizing it's all coming to an end... And I don't want it to end!
    I yearn for games which give me that kinda of feeling of wanting more, Half Life 2 Episode 2's ending for instance, Titanfall 2, Fallout: New Vegas, The Last of Us, NieR: Automata. These games are among one of those categories, which I can say is "timeless-classic" for me. I can see myself revisiting them every few years to crave my urge of "wanting more" out of them. But sadly, most of them cannot, as I've already experienced what they have to offer...All I can hope is maybe some will get a sequel!

      Honestly leaving a game or series on a high still wanting more is never a bad thing, it leaves you with good memories and positivity all round and can inspire the imagination to seek or want to create something similar. As a lover of the Star Wars original trilogy I think we all wanted more of that without demanding the quality stay high, especially as we were denied anything for so long, but what we got for our desires was poor acting in the prequels and creatively bankrupt commercial fodder that's instantly forgettable in the sequel trilogy. Demanding more without the quality and creativity that the original titles contained will inevitably result in little more than glorified map packs and serving little more than fan service, lacking fresh ideas and design to make the experience actually worthwhile.

    Great video! I definitely think it's better to leave people wanting more than less. It's like a song. One that you wish was longer usually leaves you with a better feeling than one that overstays its welcome

    This is why I will always state that a 2-4 hour game is most of the time a more memorable experience than a 20 hour game. A game like Thomas Was Alone has stuck with me infinitely more than almost all the Triple A games I've played since it came out.

      There is a good chance it will, for starters I dabble in level design as a hobby and thus I follow of a lot of professional LDs on twitter and I've recently noticed that quite a few of talented people joined Machine Games. If that's an indication of anything, Wolf3 should be light years ahead of Youngblood and it might even have a chance to top the New Order and The New Colossus if they're gonna do it right

    Honestly if a game is overly long i tend to get bored and i gradually just stop playing it even if i havent finished it or love the story. I love these videos because everytime I see one drop i can just sit down and watch a thoroughly entertaining and informative video and it genuinely makes my day. Keep up the good work man.

    One of my favorite gaming experiences was recently, discovering the Metal Gear series. I marathoned all of them, and one of the best parts about it was that they were mostly all short, that made playing all of them something I could actually feasibly do. I liked MGS4 so much, and it was so short, that I actually played it twice in a row. There is something very special about that to me. The gameplay of 5 was my favorite, but it's gargantuan runtime makes the idea or replaying it really daunting.

    Solid pacing (among many other things) is why God of War II is still one of my favorite games of all time. You never spend so much time in any one location that it ever feels like it starts to overstay its welcome--it just flows perfectly from one sequence to the next while seamlessly combining all the combat, platforming, and puzzle elements.
