- Ancient history meets modern history at the stunning East MacDonnell Ranges.
From the rugged landscapes that were home to the Arrernte people to the ruins of an abandoned gold-mining town, this is a must do stop off if you visit Alice Springs.
While the West MacDonnell's are arguably more spectacular, the East MacDonnell's will not disappoint. Let us know in the comments what you think.
Trephina Gorge is the most popular attraction with three campgrounds.
We stayed at the "Gorge campground", site 11. It backed up against the ridge and gave us some privacy.
The two shorts walks available are both must dos. The Trephina Gorge walk is a 2km trail that slowly ascends the gorge and gives you a great opportunity to admire the beautiful views as you meander along the cliff edge and back down into the dry sandy creek bed of the gorge.
The Panorama walk is a slightly more challenging 2.5km trail but offers even more spectacular views of the gorge below and surrounding ranges.
Next, we visit N'Dhala Gorge, a must see if you're interested in Aboriginal art. A 1.5km walk takes you through the center of the gorge which is home to 6000 individual petroglyphs or rock carvings dating back 10,000 years. You can see the carvings scattered in different places along the track, with some being signed while others you have to find for yourself.
Finally, we visit the historical relics of the old gold mining town of Arltunga. This was the first official Central Australian town born out of a goldrush in 1887 and once supported up to 300 people. The walk at the reserve takes you through the remains of many of the old buildings such as the Police Station and Jail.
