    Saw rust on RHS of boot at 23:49. Until you get an MOT pass, DO NOT look behind the plastic panel or remove the rear wheel to look at the weld seam where the boot floor joins the wing as you will find the sealant has hardened to cause water ingress and caused rust that needs welding. Also, don't look at the front floor from underneath immediately below your heel position where the floor meets the chassis - same problem. Don't ask how I know!

      @@justsomeone89 Own a 2005 car and regularly maintain and clean it. But the sealant they used becomes brittle and separates from the metal, allowing water and dirt to stay enclosed and rust away. In hindsight, easy to spot by checking the sealant is firm and not flaky. If flaky, peel off and spray/paint black underbody sealant.

    Rich, while I'm sorry you've got to deal with this ones smoking habit, it did give me a chuckle when you mentioned it was the same engine as the C1 etc. On the way home tonight, I was following a C1 through Christchurch in my 206 (1.6 16v). This C1 was burning lots of oil. I overtook it going onto the bypass, and was fully giving it the beans up to the speed limit (70 and not a bit more...). C1 promptly overtook me braking for the next roundabout, and heading up hill on the A35, I was struggling to keep up with it! They may be prone to smoking, but bloody 'eck they seem to take a beating well - he/she must've been ragging it in a way that'd kill most engines!

    Quite like a Sirion/Myvi. Statistically they have the highest MOT pass rate. What are the plugs like? Smoke doesn't look very blue. New air filter and a good general service (including front brake pads) should bring it back - just needs some love. Previous MOT's don't show emissions problem but do mention an oil leak - don't confuse the consumption with burning

    • @grahamherbert3612
      @grahamherbert3612 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They're nasty little rustbuckets. I've worked on enough of them. The last Sirion I did was a high exercise in finding good steel to weld to. I had to fabricate plates to extend the new floor pans.

    I do like that column mounted binnacle, dare I say that feature has a mild whiff of Citroen about it? As several have already said, the thing in the boot is a tank/coil from a Vape. Does anyone else think that is slightly ironic considering the smoking issue? Forget the multicupholder jokes, there's a whole Fringe shows worth of material right there. Good talk through of what should have been a sensible buy and some good advice, thank you K.

    Great little cars, Sirions. No issue on them would cause me to blink, they're a doddle to repair - even the rust. Check the pcv if it's burning oil, bang in a new one before doing anything else. If that doesn't cure the oil burning, drain the oil, chuck a gallon of kerosene into it instead of oil, let it idle for a bit. That'll free up stuck rings. Then do a full oil/filter change. & change the spark plugs - nobody does, so do it.

    • @jamesward5721
      @jamesward5721 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You might fall in love with it - we took in a Terios, repaired it, sold it to a customer - his missus hated it, so he traded it back in against a Freelander we had. I drove the Terios for a week to "fill a gap" - that was a year ago & i'm still driving it. I love it, gonna keep driving it. You can chuck an engine into a Sirion/C1/Aygo/107 in a few hours btw - so even if the motor was utter toast, I wouldn't give a damn. New balls!

    Just did a bit of an opposite, trading the 208 1.0L I inherited from my grandpa for a 2002 406 2.0L which is pretty well equipped. some minor issues like power socket/cigarette lighter not working and the electric mirrors not working probably being a fuse, and a headlight bulb needing changed. One major issue being the clutch possibly being on its last legs, apart from that the AC blows cold, the automatic windshield wipers (totally new to me) work fine and even the oem radio works, so pretty nice. Oh yeah and the indicator stalk is limp and does what it wants when it wants, but a new one has been ordered. Start at the beginning, check the air filter, oil change with filter, check engine breather, and then see if it still smokes.

    £1000 is next to nothing for a car these days. I’m not the least bit surprised it’s broken for that sort of money. I know things are going to be tight as you said. However if that were me I would spend a little bit extra & get the best version possible one that has all the fruits if there is such a thing. I’m a mechanic myself in Australia before anyone starts making noises. Things are different in the UK I get that just my personal view is if I am buying a car I don’t want to buy a bag of bolts where I have to work on my own car. I want to buy one that has had everything done to it which is asking an awful lot.
    Also the file price in the uk must be off the planet. I personally wouldn’t be bothered with the 1 litre version Id always get the biggest engine that is offered.
    Again Australian views here we don’t do small dinky engines.

People suggested chemtool b12 and fill up the bores, then leave it a few days to soften the carbon that’s sticking the rings. I have also heard of atf mixed with petrol, diesel (boiling, not too safe but a very old trick) and white spirits. All need an oil change before running the engine and another a few days later. The first run is a hold at decent revs for 10mins to get things nice and hot. I've seen rings stick in the pistons on cars that are driven too gently due to carbon buildup which causes oil burning, my advice is to give it a ridiculous thrashing at like 4000 revs for a good 20 mins along a dual carriageway and see if that helps at all, worked a treat on a Tigra I had!

The other side looked like it was rubbed against a tree or building. Dashboard looked like it was cleaned with sandpaper and according to the seller you couldn't open the bonnet. The brothers of the seller had showed up looking annoyed, and it did kind of started looking bit dodgy. Did manage to get away ok though.

    Very interesting issue with the smoking engine… as you say it’s just like Hubnut’s Charade which he tried to fix with magic potions and partially succeeded with before doing an engine swap. I’d let it sit with some diesel / ATF poured into the bores to try and loosen up the piston rings which do seem like the likely culprit.
    It is a peculiar Diahatsu thing with it just occurring on no load, it does seem to come with age / mileage so is not yet a known issue with the other cars that you mentioned use that engine. I’d imagine these cars get a lot of cold starts and short urban journeys so that won’t help with bore wear and coking up.
    I bet you could quickly and easily do a decoke, drill bore hone, piston ring and big end bearing swap with the engine in the car….

    I have the same car and it’s burning a liter of oil every 200 miles. I did an engine flush and that seemed to had brought oil burning gap to about 700 miles and then I did another flush which has taken it back to a liter every 200 miles.

  • @andrewpreston4127
    @andrewpreston4127 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Call that smoky.. ? Nah, Hubnut's Charade was much worse than that. You could run that for ages, so long as you keep an eye on the oil level. Also, I'd give the car a good service,, as it doesn't seem to have had much of that.
    Also, rear seat room v boot space. I think you'll find it's the same as the Mk2 Yaris..., the rear seat slides backwards and forwards, so you've got great flexibility over how much seat and boot space is available.

    So the oil gets into the combustion chamber and burns. Daihatsu, tuned by Ferrari F1.
    There are a lot of those little Daihatsus around in NZ. I test drove one, and found it pretty nice, though inclined to sway on bends. But what modern Japanese small cars is good at is space: loads of space in the cabin. Put a great big box on top of the platform, and in the case of Nissan, embrace the cube, and with Daihatsu, disguise it with curves. When I first got into a Toyota Spade, there was so much space I laughed. Like getting into a black cab--I think you actually could wear a top hat in one.
    I've got a little Toyota with one of those "The engine is cold" lights. You'd think it was telling you how long before you could start caning it, but in a city box with a CVT, not really. But what I dislike, and must work out how to turn off, is the "Eco" light. I know how hard I'm pushing the throttle, thank you, and don't need a warning light flickering. Hope Skit doesn't have one of those.
    But of course, what you are really doing is assembling the cast for a children's book series: _The Adventures of Dumpit and Skit_. Hilda will sometimes talk to them about her track days, and the C6 will look down its aristocratic nose at them and offer grand remarks about how evocative smells are, and sometimes, when it's really quiet, they'll go and gently try to wake up the SM.

    - needs a timing chain (I can't believe I didn't hear the rattle)
    - leaking oil
    - injector washer went years ago so it leaked diesel all over the engine so it's now covered in tar
    - has an oil pressure DTC
    - DTC stop start command relay shorted to ground
    - and a dead glow plug
    Apart from all this it's fine. 🙈

    Ironically enough, it would also appear the engine in this car needs multiple rings to currently burn more oil (from looking at the volume of smoke) than the two strokes with their single ring as well... Just goes to show the two stroke supremacy :)
