    I've been following you for just about a week, since TH-cam suggested your car tour video to me, and I am entirely captivated. Since then, I've subscribed, watched all of your videos, and waited impatiently for each new one that has come out. I hope to have a similar lifestyle in a couple years when I retire* and I'm loving everything about your videos: part educational, part travel/adventure, part inspirational, part vlog, and filled with resilience and good humor from start to finish. I'm excited to see where your journey leads you. Thank you for sharing it so beautifully with us.
    *Side note: To that end, I actually find these talky kinds of videos just as interesting as the others. I LOVE learning about your processes and strategies! Please don't stop doing this part too!

      Hey! I have had the same experience. I stumbled upon this lovely lady's videos and will live vicariously through her until I retire in 2 years. I have owned my suv for 14 years, so I will have minimal expenses when I live in it. Thing is... I don't have any retirement savings so I will be living off of a small pension. Probably about $500 a month. But! I am SO willing to get to those sacrifices knowing I won't have to work anymore.

    I found your channel because I looked up traveling long term specifically in a Toyota Corolla. I can't afford a van so I thought I was stuck and unable to get out on the road. You have shown me otherwise. I am now putting together some gear and planning my first trip beginning this autumn. Thank you!

    Fun exercise: Figure your car's running costs per mile! Purchase price divided by how many miles you can reasonably expect till it's dead gives depreciation (that gen Corolla is probably good for 250-300k), plus tires (guessing 2 or 3 cents?), plus typical maintenance and major repairs amortized over the life of the car (oil changes every 3-5k, filters every 20k, timing belts every 80k, etc.), plus gas. I'd guess you're looking at 20-30 cents per mile, give or take? All relative to what you wanna do, but it's a handy number to know for rationalizing impulsive driving decisions!
    BTW- Found your channel this week, it's awesome! So much good travel footage (and commentary). It's gained over 1K new subs in that time, and I notice all the most-viewed videos (5 figures vs. 3 or 4) are *about* car life, not what you're actually seeing, lol. God keep you!

    • @nickbroadhurst5924
      @nickbroadhurst5924 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Can you share info about your income? Are you working remotely while on the road or are you living off savings? If you are living off savings, are you planning on doing something to earn income? If you are working remotely, can you share your work situation?
    One of the biggest barrier to people thinking of living on the road is not if they willing to sacrifice the comfort of having a house but rather if they can afford to do so long term.

    Your NE accent is adorable - west coaster here so it's a bit jarring in a good way! It's great to see someone from the other side of the country explore the west as I feel we can get a bit jaded out here :/. As much as I love the idea of van life sometimes, living in a bike-able/walk-able city with a lot of conveniences is important to me - plus as someone who is pretty tall, my choice of vehicle feels pretty limited as I can't imagine sleeping in a cramped sedan.
    I'd love to bike tour the country but having the shelter of your car actually gives you a lot more options in terms of taking your time and amenities. I'm not used to paying for a car, so that's a big hurdle if I ever have to jump it! Thanks for making these types of videos, I personally find the meta/logistics videos more interesting than the destinations so I am curious to know if you have side hustle work (or if TH-cam is a part of that) while you travel, or if this is pretty much out of pocket.

    Is it normal for car insurance to cost so much in the US? $142 (approx £110) a month sounds like a lot ($1704 a year, approx £1328 😮 ). I thought we were paying a lot at £430 (approx $550) a _year_ . Also, idk about renters insurance or what that ientails. But in the UK I have "contents insurance" which covers everything in my flat and any legal fees I might have if someone sues me for example. I bumped mine up higher than it needed to be in order to cover some valuables and I pay just £19 a month (approx $24), which surprisingly went down from last years. So $158 a month is also pretty shocking.
    Anyway, don't forget that you were paying the car insurance while living in your apartment, so it's an expense you would have had anyway rather than it being a replacement for your renter's insurance. So technically you should add the car i surance to your apartment tally too.

    So so much respect. I wish I had travelled and spent time like this when I was younger. I live in the UK England, so the thought of living your life over here does not appeal in the UK. I guess I was worried about driving abroad in the States, although years later with more experience of driving here, I felt confident enough to do a fly drive from Miami down to the keys. Listening to how much things cost, the only thing I was thinking was "I couldn't live without my washing machine and tumble dryer 😂". In England it's almost always wet and cold. In my apartment it was a priority. I used to use laundry mat places whilst living in London but they cost a fortune, ruined my expensive clothes for work and used so much time with having no Internet there. Yes I guess I could have bought books to read but that would add to heaviness of laundry. Also, if I left things and came back, I'd risk having them stolen. Much respect for following your heart, staying safe and streetwise and for your parents giving you the confidence and ability to follow your dreams and your heart. Such beautiful scenery reminds you we are such a small part of everything. Best wishes from across the pond England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

    an expensive breakdown and also money for hotel accommodan if needed :)

Definitely learned that buying additional vehicle was not the solution even through temporarily it worked but it came down to knowing when to give in to working around your environment. I couldn't do a car, but I don't like the current victorian fixer upper. But that's because hubby only found work 3 hrs away, so we're trying to sell. We actually looked at a 1000 sq ft trailer today, but the lot rent, insurance, property tax, and "hOA" fee is HIGH together (college town). But we're looking into such options because we all want to be together, we have a cat and it's really hard to find a place around the area we want to move to where you can have a cat that you can let outside and put in a garden, so we'll be happy when we find a suitable one. Victorian's great and fun to restore and renovate but not when there's no work in town and family ends up getting separated. Half of us are in that area and the other half of us is here. NO GOOD. Rather go small and be together. THat's my thought.

    I don't quite understand the comparison if you are not including the income side of the equation. I assume your new job/employment is fully remote and has the same income?
    I remember when I finished high school (1970's), my best friend and I quit our jobs and went on an month-long extended vacation traveling all across the western USA in a Toyota Celica (quite smaller than your Corolla) and camped (individual 1-person tents) all along the way. But it was clearly a vacation and not a life style.
    Anyway, enjoy your travels as they are indeed best when you are young.

    But how do you make money? Most people aren’t travelling full time because they have to go to a single location for work. It’s not so much about the comforts of a house.

    What about propane to your campstove? Or do you just eat peanut butter and celery a lot. . . I lived in a tent for 3 months. I ate a lot of peanut butter too. And cheese . . . melted on whole grain sprout bread. . . and instant chicken soup with fresh brocolli chopped in. It was almost vegetarian. Other produce I ate, too. I don't really remember that much.

  • @AmyKozerski

    It's probably a better comparison to estimate miles driven monthly in each situation and use that with your average mpg and the current gas price. Because like you said, what you spent back then was dependent on very volatile gas prices.

    Why not get a Camry or Avalon hybrid or the larger sized Prius if you are going to live in a Toyota and do a lot of driving? You can find those used for probably less than you paid for your Corolla which is not even a hybrid.

    Maybe you could trade in for a mini van or a small cargo van. You might feel more comfortable and safer since there are less windows in the back. Gas mileage is probably not much different.

    • @meself4955
      @meself4955 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gas mileage will be highly different. A cargo van gets 15 mpg at best and she said her car gets 40mpg. With the amount of driving she's doing, she'll be paying more than her rent in gas.

  • @AlexCastellanos1

    5:20 Car maintanance: you may want to consider pricing the way the IRS does, per miles travelled. This would pay for gas and deferred car maintanance.
