Oh yeah people are so nosy! I travel by myself sometimes, surf by myself and sometimes hike (easy hikes) by myself. People try to give unsolicited lectures all the time. It can be difficult to find someone to join you and coordinate dates and times, so it’s far easier to just go yourself. I honestly have a lot more fun by myself.
1. Tree fell on my house (condemned), had it fallen this way rather than that way... Well, I wouldn't be typing this. 2. People are sheep. I'll park in the north 40 of a parking lot (to help me remember WHERE I parked) with no one around. Until the magnetic personality of my car draws them in - even when there are wide open places all around. 3.As to being forced to only looking at the highway? My travel buddy not only looks in ALL directions, but takes her hands (yes, plural) to point. I left my heart in the Andes in Panama. Can't complain (TOO much), as, like Greyhound, I leave the driving to her. But, as a Nervous Nelly, I don't see the scenery as I am always pointing out how close she is to another car, red lights, etc. So glad you have AAA!
I feel the same way at the gym when I’m on a treadmill, there are 15 treadmills available but that one person has to come and use the one right next to me.
I'll see what I can write up, although I think it would be hard to encompass all things safety for the road. You inevitably will leave something out, but I'll have to see if I can come up with something creative to share little tips. There are so many good ones out there already! I really liked the safety video Christian Schaffer did for Solo Female Travelers she covered a lot!
Also, she already mentioned she carries "weapons" here, unspecified; and it's probably smarter NOT to specify for the whole internet to know. The rest is a combo of wilderness safety and car safety, and while there's lot of things you should carry for those, there's a lot more important things you should KNOW. That could easily be a 2 hour video!
It’s funny how your video lines up with the time I told the travel agent at AAA that I was traveling to Northern California from Southern California and all she could do was focus on asking me if I was scared. Then I started thinking…..”Should I be???”Ugh.
Just getting into this lifestyle and as I am telling my friends and family it's less so of the safety quiz and more so of the worry quiz. "what if this what if that?" And I've tried explaining that a good majority of the car living lifestyle is letting go of those worries and truly living in the moment! Yes, it does come from a place of love and I can understand how when you say "I'm traveling and living out of my car" people tend to freak out with anxiety! BUT, as you said, it's something we're choosing to do. We understand the risks, we know the inconvenience, it's WHAT WE WANT TO DO!! I'm blessed to have a few people in my life that are supportive unbiasedly, but if anyone is thinking of doing this don't expect the support right away. Sometimes you have to show your loved ones that you CAN do this and that you ARE safe and they'll come around with the support! Great video thank you for sharing!
I travel solo a lot; if people ask me where is my companion, I just tell them my boyfriend or husband will join me later. I don't let strangers know I am traveling by myself. (In fact, most people just assume I have company anyway).
Lol. As someone who also travels alone and is also indecisive, the struggle is real. Your hairdresser impersonation is on point. My favorite are the "Wow, you're brave," comments from other women, which dependent on tone either mean "I wish I could be like you" or "Bless your heart, you're going to die."
I've traveled alone all my adult life (not full time, but frequently and for long distances) and believe me, the safety quiz is an eternal constant. Even when I don't get fully quizzed, I often get asked (especially by women around my age), "Aren't you scared??" Uhhhh... nope, I'm not. Like you, I just try to remember that the questions come from a caring place and let it go. It's really all you can do.
Everyone means well and are expressing concern like you said, they don't know you have had the same conversation a million times before. Just one of those things!
As we say here in the South, “Bless their heart.” So sorry that you get so many crazy questions. Have fun and keep those videos coming. They make my day 😊.
I have the same with people parking right next to me. Even in other outdoor occasions, if there's people around I purposely walk further away to enjoy nature alone and someone is gonna come all the way and sit 2 meters from me on an empty beach, why ?
My wife would go on solo concert tours of her favorite band and always get people shocked that she was by herself. Get out there, see things and have fun! Safety third! Love the videos, keep it up!
You are SO wonderful...I love watching your videos. As a psychologist, I have to say I love your attitude and sense of adventure. So many people don't live their authentic lives due to the opinions of others! Good for you! 🎉
Agreed about not being able to totally enjoy the scenery around you when driving due to looking ahead. I am going to employ a strategy of driving one day and staying 3-5 days and then repeating. That way I hope to see more, hike more, and drive less. And get to know the areas I visit more fully. Just gotta finish my van build out and hit the road. Happy Travels to you!
That's a good balance, in the beginning I was rushing around to someplace new every single day and feel like I missed half the country! That's a good strategy with the 3 to 5 days! Enjoy your travels!!
@@angieontour1 I also plan to use the Meetup app to find local hiking, board game, biking groups and go to some meetups wherever I am. A great way to get to know people. I have made quite a few good friends through meetup.
omg...when I went to a gas station near Palm Springs, I got up in the middle of the night, I had parked along the side but all the cars that were there earlier were gone now, it was like 2am or something. There was a car parked on the end of this row...when I came back to my car..this car all the sudden turned their car on, pulled up AGGRESSIVELY RIGHT next to me, parking in reverse! I was REALLY scared because NO ONE was outside! I sat there waiting for "the knock" or something and nothing happened but it was so freaking weird...and scary!
I get similarly questioned as a single female host on Airbnb (I rent out a spare bedroom). It's usually from the male guests though. I tell them that I am prepared for the worst but will not elaborate on exactly how, as I do not know if they themselves will end up being the aforementioned "worst".
I'm usually the driver so I miss all the sights too but I wouldn't mind driving a bit to give you time to take it all in. And glad you have bear spray and human spray.
Thank you Angie. You are well spoken. When I drove rideshare I became accustomed to the repetitive type conversations. It made me a stronger person for it ha. These were great insights on what you find annoying. Great video! Thank you, Russ
your the best :) i also hate people that park right by you when your empty spaces all over. i watch them on my cameras to make sure they dont do anything weird next to me and a rinse kit system is nice to have pressured water for dishes or anything else you need for a quick wash. you can also get a rechargeable water pump that goes right on top of your water container and it acts like a sink. :)
Oh my gosh, this was amazing. Thank you for this video! I mostly solo travel with my teardrop trailer (though I’m not full time) and all of these pet peeves are so spot on. So far I’ve mostly gotten the safety quiz about solo hiking more than the camping. For the camping I usually get the surprised, quizzical look. At the last campground I was at, the older couple next door wanted to check with me multiple times that my friends were indeed showing up on the weekend, haha. As to the just staring at pavement, I’m so there with you. I get very annoyed when I’m not given warning about a viewpoint so I can be sure to turn off and actually see the view.
As someone from Eastern Europe I'm already surprised you can upload all these publicly and stay safe. lol They would steal my car here while I'm sleeping in it. 😂
Yeah, can totally get it. Most people who feel the need to impose their fear on you have never ventured outside the security of their own home. Sad for them!! As a fellow random adventurer across these great United States it is unfathomable in most peoples comprehension (again: "never venture outside the security of their own home:") to travel outside of anything less than a hotel/motel and even the more economical are hitting large public campgrounds (with obnoxious neighbors blasting crap music for the whole campground to hear oblivious to the fact there are other people there as well). Seriously people, its not an issue to those of us who do this stuff frequently. But hey, I am fine. The more of you who are scared out of your wits to venture out the more of all this natural peace and beauty we can enjoy without your mucking it up with your fears and the trash you leave behind for us to pick up because we actually respect and appreciate these wonderful places. Cheers Ms. Angie! Keep up the good work.
Oh my goodness. I can not, for the life of me, figure out why people have to park right next to you in a big open parking lot! Literally happens to me on a weekly basis. I’ve gotten to the point where I just stare at them
Very nice shot, revere shot. I felt like I was there in the salon! Did you know that if you are more than 50 miles away from the nearest dispatch, AAA will send a helicopter to air lift your car to the nearest garage? They will even let you ride in the car while they carry it.
Al Quinn gets the safety quiz too hiking alone...people ask about bears but don't think about asking about mooses (meese?) which are far more numerous and dangerous
The "cozy parkers" seem to obey an instinct to park in numbers for safety. It's not very logical. Good on you for the rest. Be safe, keep learning, and _illegitimi non carborundum!_
I love your videos. Sometimes they are a little bit long. Then I feel bad that I haven't finished them. I like seeing what you're up to and your take on things; you are quite valuable in a cardboard cutout world. Maybe I should watch all the way through. But by 5:00 minutes here I already felt quite entertained and glad about a person like you in the world.
I think this video is my favorite so far. Thanks for sharing your videos. If it's not too much to ask, I hope to see more cooking videos as well. But I have to say, you're great at storytelling. 😊
No no no! Don't!! I really do appreciate all the well wishes and concerns, what is annoying is the ridiculous line of questioning that happens towards the end of the safety quiz like "Well what if you got struck by lightning as a bear was charging you?" Those sorts of questions, which people tend to ask after the basic safety questions. I appreciate the well wishes of safety!! Thank you for them!
As someone also traveling by car but staying at airbnbs instead (3rd world ones are cheap!), I can totally relate to the third one and so have many folks I follow around. I'd say that your solution is pretty much the standard and it seems to work for (almost) everybody, including myself. Gotta stop from time to time to breathe and just lay still, which is something we do quite often at our fixed places and sort of neglect its benefits
The catastrophic thinkers are usually people with Borderline Personality Disorder. Others have been the people who learned *extremely painful and lasting lessons* from having met a charming, disarming same-species predator who left them with years of psychological recovery from PTSD that turned their life completely upside down, and after taking several years to neurologically heal from that traumatic encounter they (fortunately) survived (and weren't killed), and now they want to make certain that they are the person who warns as many others as humanly possible...even total strangers...so that others can avoid the extremely traumatizing, and indescribably horrific experience of one of those very disarming, charming, fully-masked predators that left them with *years* of neurological healing that turned their life entirely upside down in a way that you can't possibly imagine, unless you've experienced personally or known someone very close to you and had to watch them try to put the pieces of their life back together. Those people are trying to spare you from what you don't yet know...what you don't yet know (and with any good fortune will never have to learn). Anyone who has had to survive the trauma of a same-species predator as an "adult" will want to spare someone else from having to learn it the hard way, as they did. Seriously. ...and the catastrophic thinkers usually do have Borderline Personality Disorder so just politely respond with a counter they will understand: "Respectfully, I appreciate your concern, but I'm well-versed in personal protection, have a variety of methods to help me assure that is possible, and because of this I do not live my life paralyzed in fear due to catastrophic thinking patterns." Having spent 15 years traveling the world...alone...as a female just barely over the legal drinking age, I can tell you that generally works, especially when you add a complete topic shift upon finishing that statement, asking them where they are going, and then when they finish responding politely and cheerfully say something like, "It was great chatting with you, and if our paths don't cross again, safe travels!" and be on your way. lol
Hay kid I have been alone most of my 63 years Talking to and answering yourself is the few time in your life that you will have the most intelligent conversation you will ever have

Enjoyed this. Nominate you for best actress, supporting actress, writer, director, cinematographer, film editor, original screen play... in best short subject comedy... and... umm.... that might not cover the depth and breadth of your talent... and it doesn't speak to your warm, affable, engaging personality... awesome angie... ;)
Yep I get that parking next to me issue, when there are several acres of parking spaces to choose from in CA parks/lots/garages. They always stare at me too. What can’t they just mind there own business?
U.S. Highway 550 in case people want to find the “Million Dollar Highway” on a map. One of the most glorious routes in the beautiful state of Colorado.
Haha! I just spent 4 months driving everywhere (Yes, I have been there!) 14,000 miles of asphalt. I drove them all. I feel the "can't see the beauty" tissue COMPLETELY. Jaha😂
Ok...For #3 (eyes on the road)...Set up a camera shooting through your side window on pre-selected stretches of road (that you believe may be interesting), and store that data separately. After you build up a few terabytes, review the video looking for cool or funny stuff and produce serial compilation videos called “Side View Antics with Angie #blah”. Might help your watchtime total.
People can be such asphalts sometimes, can't they? I had a couple of creepy encounters driving cross country many years ago, and some sketchy ones, but way more pleasant ones, which made it all worth it. I also knew next to nothing about fixing cars back then, basically swapping a spare tire for a flat and topping off the oil and coolant (I can now fix nearly everything on a car but the engine), but I was fine, because wait for it, I had AAA! 😅
actually, I'm a little afraid of going solo because the car a recently bought , a Hyunday 2020 venue broke down, luckily I was near a hyundai dealer and they to change the tranmission completely. May be if a change to a Honda or Toyota I will go back again on the road 👍🏻 cool video
Haha… #4 making decisions; where to sleep, eat, shower, route planning, etc, is my top travel stress and I wouldn’t change it for nothing! Solo travel rules😊
It doesn't surprise me that you get the safety quiz all the time, but try not to take it too much to heart. Do what makes you feel safe and don't change your behaviour beyond that just to appease the worry warts. It's easy to internalize the "everything is a threat" mentality, but in fact, threats are few and far between.
Hi Angie I think you should stop listening to other what they think of you and listen to your hart because you are a nice lady and wondering if you have ever been to Canada because I live in Toronto Ontario Canada and you are a beautiful lady and love your videos .
Yeah... well.... what if AAA goes bust?! THEN WHAT.... just look at it all as people trying to make conversation with you just to be talking to someone.... Great material for a video, though...
Well said :) Now for the pet peeves while driving. Mine is people cutting grass and shooting it in the road when I might run over glass or something that will puncture my tires. But..maybe I'll cover that on my own channel. Good Video except the southern accent..I think that was what you were doing. Nah...
"Sure, but what are you going to do if a family of velociraptors walks out from behind the waterfall with their rabid pet wolverine? Think your bear spray's gonna handle that?"
That's why I carry the velociraptor spray when I venture north of Oklahoma. I didn't think about wolverine spray... do you think they sell that at Walmart?
I was just wondering, what if you're attacked by a pack of wild wolves (as opposed to the domesticated kind so many of us own and love) while sinking in a pit of quicksand as a gang of bikers ride circles around you revving their unmuffled engines and you just realized that you're out of cawfee? Does AAA cover that, or is this more of a Better Call Saul situation? This has happened to me more times than I care to remember, as it has to most of us, of course.
I’m lucky I don’t get the safety quiz as much cause I’m a dude and I’m 6’3, I was homeschooled, so pretty much most my adventures have been with my brother or by myself, that’s what I’m used to, I imagine it’s way worse for the ladies though
OMG why do people park so close to your parked car????? Sometimes (not even.solo car travelers) want to be alone…. I park by myself sometimes and I’m mostly alone. 😂😂😂 I’ll keep the AAA in mind tho, thanks 😂😂😂 keep the stories coming. What do you do for work? (I’m going to look back on your older stuff, I’m sure you mentioned it before. 💜
Congratulations on your bold adventure, you have more fortitude than most. I drove 10 hours per day on route 80 for 6 days to travel from CA to MA, I'm impressed that you did the coast to coast in only 3. USEFUL ANSWERS TO ANNOYING QUESTIONS: Any big plans? Yes, I'm traveling around the country to find a great place to start a great life. Are you travelling by yourself? Of course, I'm not selfish enough to drag any of my family or friends along because they have their own pursuits and obligations. Also, I am not a helpless female who lacks intelligence and common sense. Where do you sleep? I have a mobile shelter which is most dependable. Also, I can always find a decent motel along the way. Why don't you find a man to go with you? ( a sarcastic answer is sometimes the best ) Sure, I can just pick one up at some bar or rent an escort, LOL.
The American Automobile Association. You paid them something and then if you have car trouble they come to help. They also lobby the government for pro car policies but that is less well known.
A dog would be a nice traveling companion. But, most national parks that I've been to don't allow them on trails. As to dishes, paper plates and plastic spoons/forks are cheap at COSTCO. 😂
"I carry human spray too." 😂
Spray around you before you come across anyone, that way coast will be clear beforehand.

There's that old wry joke: "So, you went to Hawaii! What was it like?" . . . "It was long and black and had a white line down the middle . . ."
Good stuff. Feel free to make a part 2 or turn this into an ongoing series. Love the reenacted safety quiz conversations.
I use to park super far wayyyyyyyy back to get the exercise.
Would you consider doing a video on safety tips? From what you’ve learned so far 😊 I’d love to hear your thoughts and learn something new

About the asphalt… lane keeping assists are getting good and really help with the views and stress. Been wondering if it’s possible to retrofit one..
For dishes on the road I have one little spray bottle with soapwater and one little spray bottle with just water works really well
I can't stop laughing at the haircutter impersonation.
Oh my goodness. I can not, for the life of me, figure out why people have to park right next to you in a big open parking lot! Literally happens to me on a weekly basis. I’ve gotten to the point where I just stare at them

You need your own Carrol Burnett show! You're funny Stuff!!😂

Good luck girl, stay safe, ur a good story teller 😅

I'd say that your solution is pretty much the standard and it seems to work for (almost) everybody, including myself. Gotta stop from time to time to breathe and just lay still, which is something we do quite often at our fixed places and sort of neglect its benefits
Great video, as always! The reenactments are hilarious!!
Seriously.
...and the catastrophic thinkers usually do have Borderline Personality Disorder so just politely respond with a counter they will understand: "Respectfully, I appreciate your concern, but I'm well-versed in personal protection, have a variety of methods to help me assure that is possible, and because of this I do not live my life paralyzed in fear due to catastrophic thinking patterns."
Having spent 15 years traveling the world...alone...as a female just barely over the legal drinking age, I can tell you that generally works, especially when you add a complete topic shift upon finishing that statement, asking them where they are going, and then when they finish responding politely and cheerfully say something like, "It was great chatting with you, and if our paths don't cross again, safe travels!" and be on your way. lol
Hay kid I have been alone most of my 63 years
Talking to and answering yourself is the few time in your life that you will have the most intelligent conversation you will ever have
Great video Angie! Thanks for always sharing with us!💖😎👍JP

WOW! You should write movie trailers! You made that sound way more exciting than it was. Thank you! Very flattering writing!
“Ill just go kidnap one”💀
Enjoyed this. Nominate you for best actress, supporting actress, writer, director, cinematographer, film editor, original screen play... in best short subject comedy... and... umm.... that might not cover the depth and breadth of your talent... and it doesn't speak to your warm, affable, engaging personality... awesome angie... ;)
Yep I get that parking next to me issue, when there are several acres of parking spaces to choose from in CA parks/lots/garages. They always stare at me too. What can’t they just mind there own business?
I'm way too lazy to answer all those safety questions. When the barrage starts I just shrug and "meh". End of convo.
U.S. Highway 550 in case people want to find the “Million Dollar Highway” on a map. One of the most glorious routes in the beautiful state of Colorado.
OMG... To funny. I get those questions alot as well.
Ahhhh the safety quiz... i used to get that all the time and I'm a tall stalky intimidating looking dude.
Haha! I just spent 4 months driving everywhere (Yes, I have been there!) 14,000 miles of asphalt. I drove them all. I feel the "can't see the beauty" tissue COMPLETELY. Jaha😂
You might really like my friends book called “bicycling with butterflies.” She rode her bike alone following the monarch migration for 10k miles.
"resist the urge" lol i love that.
actually, I'm a little afraid of going solo because the car a recently bought , a Hyunday 2020 venue broke down, luckily I was near a hyundai dealer and they to change the tranmission completely. May be if a change to a Honda or Toyota I will go back again on the road 👍🏻 cool video
About the parking situation, it’s not creepiness. It’s neuroticism and obsessive-compulsiveness.
You're so wonderful...wish there were more women like you!!!
I hope they will perfect auto pilot soon and you will be able to take advantage of it.
“You should find a man to go with you” “sure I’ll just kidnap one” 😂😂😂😂😂😂 dead
Haha… #4 making decisions; where to sleep, eat, shower, route planning, etc, is my top travel stress and I wouldn’t change it for nothing! Solo travel rules😊
Just don't decide is actually a Pretty good way to cope with that. Or just walk through the day and see what happens without deciding.
😂😂 love your humorrrr
You are lovely ❤️
It doesn't surprise me that you get the safety quiz all the time, but try not to take it too much to heart. Do what makes you feel safe and don't change your behaviour beyond that just to appease the worry warts.
It's easy to internalize the "everything is a threat" mentality, but in fact, threats are few and far between.
Hahaha I was a hairstylist and we def had This going on 😂
Hilarious and definitely non fictional! I will note from my own experience AAA is WORTHLESS though.
Next time a creep park right next to your vehicle, exit your yours with a light saber, stare into their eyes and say park next to me you do not! lol
AAA is awesome. I tell everyone to get it. And you have lots of discounts. It pays for itself at $125/year.
Hi Angie I think you should stop listening to other what they think of you and listen to your hart because you are a nice lady and wondering if you have ever been to Canada because I live in Toronto Ontario Canada and you are a beautiful lady and love your videos .
So, where's the pet you speak of. Thanks for sharing, Angie!
Yeah... well.... what if AAA goes bust?! THEN WHAT.... just look at it all as people trying to make conversation with you just to be talking to someone.... Great material for a video, though...
Enjoy your travel!
I'm solo travel too.
Listening to your radio or music, 🎤.
Don't listen to “their” whatever they saying.
Hu cares, right? lol.
This was great !🤣
🤣😂🤣The Safety quiz! OMG, so many times.
I literally just got one this morning... good timing! She was really sweet and meant well by it. No harm done!
@@angieontour1 If you visit Columbus, OH, in the fall, you should be able to find some.
But I mean, AAA is CLUTCH. Seriously lol. Love your videos! ABOUT THE PARKING THING THAT HAPPENS TO ME EVERY TIME! WHY!!!! So ridiculous. I hate it
Congratulations on your bold adventure, you have more fortitude than most.
I get unreasonably angry over the parking thing.
What is AAA ? Also where is it exactly that you're most lickely to plan that kidnapping ? Will there be a queue or something ?
The American Automobile Association. You paid them something and then if you have car trouble they come to help. They also lobby the government for pro car policies but that is less well known.
A dog would be a nice traveling companion. But, most national parks that I've been to don't allow them on trails. As to dishes, paper plates and plastic spoons/forks are cheap at COSTCO. 😂
