He's gotta go with O'Malley considering he's one of the main promoters for Sean aside from the UFC, but let's hope he's right. This is one of those rare times where it's hard to know which way the MMA gods are leaning. It seemed like they were leaning towards Belal over Leon, Islam over Volk, O'Malley over Aljo, etc. And by MMA gods, I mean the judges and machine that seem to get the UFC the outcome they want, and give you that "feeling" ahead of time. If this was Merab vs anyone else, the winds would seem to be blowing in his direction, as they have in all his previous fights. But, O'Malley "needs" this in order to be the "next guy", and the UFC machine needs it to be Sean as well. I'm not saying things are predetermined, but sometimes you just have that feeling despite what "should" happen stylistically, on paper, etc. Let's just hope champions become super active again, because damn it's hard to wait so long for these title fights! It was much easier as a super casual back in the day.

I think Merab thinks he can beat Sean purely based on volume. It has worked against most of his opponents. But I don't think it's a good idea to spam attacks with someone like Sean O'Malley. Sean is very attentive. Both he and his team will be watching what Merab does during the fight. Merab leaves a lot of openings. For example, he never steps back out of range after an attack. This is a dangerous mistake with Sean and he will notice when Merab does it.

Omalleys a striker, going against a wrestler. What will a wrestler instinctually do, if you run at them to bum-rush them..they shoot. Thus, you throw the flyung knee. Fights over. Just like Masvidal vs Askren.

Seemed like to me what happened was initially most martial artist were representing one form. Overnight everything changed and everyone realized they needed BJJ and grappling and ground fighting and the concept of the complete fighter was born. We are still developing that idea. I sometimes wonder if Khabib showed us the best form for winning a cage match. At the same time I wonder if more pure strikers can be so fast and talented that they can dominate. It's what makes this sport fun.
If Merab is smart, i think this would be a similar fight to DDPvAdesanya

Likeable and watchable are different tho... O'Malley is a kook for sure, but for the sake of watching good fights, we need him as the champ IMO. I don't follow fighters or anyone on socials, and watch as little BTS content as possible tho. In terms of one having all of the skills to win (Izzy/Merab) and the other having to just find one shot (O'Malley/Alex)
For that reason, I have stuck with choosing O'Malley to win this fight by late 3rd round/ early 4th round TKO
I would however not be surprised to see Merab win by decision, actually if it goes all 5 rounds i would be genuinely suprised to see O'Malley's hand raised.
