======== The Price Of A Mile LYRICS =======
Hear the sound of a machinegun
Hear it echo in the night
    Mortals firing rains the scene
    Scars the fields
    that once were green
It’s a stalemate at the frontline
where the soldiers rest in mud
    roads and houses
    all is gone
there is no glory to be won
know that many men will suffer
know that many men will die
half a million lives at stake
    Ask the fields of Passchendaele
And as the night falls the general calls
and the battle carries on and on
    How long?
What is the purpose of it all
What’s the price of a mile?
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It’s an army on the march
    Long way from home
Paying the price in young men’s lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
    It’s an army in despair
    Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out
    Thousands of machineguns
Kept on firing through the night
Mortars blazed and wrecked the scene
Guns in the fields that once were green
Still a deadlock at the frontline
Where the soldiers die in mud
roads and houses since long gone
still no glory has been won
know that many men has suffered
know that many men has died
Six miles of ground has been won
Half a million men are gone
And as the men crawled the general called
And the killing carried on and on
    How long?
What’s the purpose of it all?
What’s the price of a mile?
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It’s an army on the march
    Long way from home
Paying the price in young men’s lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
    It’s an army in despair
    Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out
    Young men are dying
    They pay the price
    Oh how they suffer
So tell me what’s the price of a mile
That’s the price of a mile.
Thousands of feet march to the beat
It’s an army on the march
    Long way from home
Paying the price in young men’s lives
Thousands of feet march to the beat
    It’s an army in despair
    Knee-deep in mud
Stuck in the trench with no way out

There are 2 kinds of Sabaton songs.
1st: Songs that tell incredible war stories with an appropriate amount of respect (like you do in History class in school) and

So at the first karaoke night at the local pub after he passed. I sang it in honor of him. I tried to not tear up singing it. But it was hard. Thank you sabaton. My great uncle at 16 volunteered in WW1 - he fought and survived the Somme, then was sent to Paschendaele. This song and 1916 are indirect memories of how he lived in the trenches. Lest We Forget all those fought and died. Their memories will live on forever.

I'm a 90% self-taught music theorist. I've had one formal lesson my entire life, so I may be wrong, but here's what I'm getting from this; correct me if I'm wrong.
The album version of this song is in a major key, sounding at the very least 'hopeful' that the price of the mile could at least teach future generations the atrocity that the war unleashed upon the world, and that the good to come of it will really be that we'll never make such a costly mistake ever again. Point is, it's in a major key, and sounds almost action-y.
This live version is in a minor key. Any sense of hope for a silver lining is gone. This is an anthem of pure despair. They're channeling the woe of 500,000 souls lost in the trenches of that campaign, conveying the horror and demoralizing agony of being stuck in the trench with no way out. It's ominous. It's depressing. War is Hell, and it was really called No Man's Land because no man ever wants to be in that surface-abyss, staring into such torment and devastation, unleashed upon mortal souls.
This live version is death, channeled by the living. It's haunting. It's tearful. It's miserable. It's in a different key than the album version by design, and it's bone-chillingly beautiful.

This song always make me think about the battle that happened in my hometown in WW1 one year before the battle of Passchandale. In the war cemetery we have in town are burried romanians, transylvanian romanians, germans, austrians, hungarians, croats and many more. Everyone in one cemetery without seperate rows everyone in one place remeding for future generations that we are all humans.

I've search for Passchaendale battle because of this song. When I saw what happened, 270 thousands of allies soldiers and 240 thousands of germans died for a meaningless campaign poorly planned, that the generals just sent innocent men to die while they were seated in their casemates writing reports... It's too much. Really the families, not the countries, paid the price in young men's lives.
