Howard's book 'Unlearn your pain' saved my life. I have a history of anxiety, pelvic pain, back pain and most recently, chronic burning facial pain (like acid shooting down my face) which showed up during an extremely stressful period. Doctors told me it was permanent neuralgia which only created more panic and fear in my body. Only once I fully believed that I was healthy and that my own brain was creating this pain, was I able to reverse it. Took a lot of self talk and compassionate reassurance but it worked. Seriously, my pain was so intense that I didn't want to live any more... I am living proof that this theory is true. Our minds are so incredibly powerful- we can heal ourselves.
+Kaitlin Daly Its a great pleasure and inspiring to read you message ! Though I don't know you I m very happy that you had such a fantastic recovery!. It would be very important to me if you could detail more what did you do to cure yourself.WHat do you mean when you say: ". Only once I fully believed that I was healthy and that my own brain was creating this pain, was I able to reverse ". And: ". Took a lot of self talk and compassionate reassurance but it worked. "' I have depression Kaitlin and is already almost an year of suffering. Probably my depression is triggered by anxiety!! most of time at least... and I can't tak medicines for anxiety because on me they produce a dangerous and scary side effect. Can you give me a help?, an advise? Congratulations!!
Kaitlin Daily Your pain was caused by stress. I'm 70 years old now. When I was in my 40's I raced dirt bikes in the woods for five years and suffered some permanent injuries that cause me pain even after all these years. Plus I fell off a ladder in 2000 and had to have my left hip joint replaced in 2005. I also came down with shingles in my right abdomen last summer and I'm still in constant pain from that. So I find it hard to believe that trying to cure my chronic pain with soul power would work very well, if at all. If I thought it might work I'd give it a try. Do you think that would really work for me?

I went through therapy and tried every single herbal remedy under the sun. The only thing that helps is old fashioned medication. Nothing else helped. It's in your head, True but, it's the Reaction beyond therapy or food or natural remedies. Period. I hated to take meds to the point that I was bed ridden until I TOOK meds. Full stop.
I agree to a certain point. However, finally at age 68 it was discovered I have Hypermobility EDS! Therefore, the final whiplash never healed in 1996 as my muscles took over for very inadequate ligaments. Mismanagement of care and my entire health tanked and can be traced back to childhood and how my body faltered.
@@julieshenk7640 I’m 67, and the same thing is happening to me! I’ve been in pain with my lower back since I was 14, had a swayback, which is a spinal deformity that no one ever told me about, and leg pain throughout my childhood that was excruciating! They said it was “growing pains”, but I’m only 4’9” and 99 lbs! My leg pain went away while I was teaching high school for 40 years, but I got too sick from breast implants and mold to continue. I had to retire early and the leg pain came back after the last operation I had of 4 in 10 months. The last was to remove the implants and o contracted a 50% deadly infection from the hospital? Pseudomonas aeriginosa. No one believed I had so much pain until 7 weeks later when my incision festered. The immediately called me and said to go to my doctor who gave me a shot and cipro. That took it away, but I developed the same leg pain as when I was a kid. NO ONE TAKES ME SERIOUSLY EXCEOT CHIROPRACTORS! I can’t even stand for 10 minutes, and I live a third of a life!
I hope more people see this. I was fortunate enough to have seen a doctor that knew about this. I went to him for the pain in my arm, and after having run several tests and verified that it was healthy, he explained to me some of what the doctor in this video is explaining. This took the fear away and gave me confidence as he told me that I can carry on normally and do all the things I usually do. Long story short I overcame that pain and it's one of the most enlightening things I've learnt. I still have the tendency to worry and stress and I make sure to stay aware of pesky pains that stem from stress and tame them immediately. I'm now also working on managing stress and after learning all these habits I hope to completely overcome this.
When I was finally able to get to a doctor for my back pain, it was so amazing to be validated and told my pain is real. I have a clear MRI, and because of that I get no understanding from most of the people in my life. Chronic Pain is the invisible disease that people suffer alone, unless they have an amazing support system. Something SO important to have!
sarazorz Read the book "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. She writes that we are eternal energy/light, holographic, multidimensional and electromagnetic. She teaches people how to heal themselves.
Weird. I have 7 bulging discs and I was told they're not "that bad and shouldn't be causing pain" I've spent an entire month on the floor, crying in pain. I have had my life completely altered I don't have any quality of life and no Dr gives a shit
Thanks for writing, Nicholas. It is easy to misunderstand my work. Not all pain is caused by the brain. As a physician, I am well aware that pain can be due to pinched nerves, tumors, and other structural problems. It sounds like you had a pinched nerve that will get better over time, as is the usual course for these situations. However, it is well established that some pain is actually caused by the brain. When we don't understand that fact, many people can be misled into incorrect diagnoses and ineffective treatment. Best wishes, Howard Schubiner, MD
This video changed my life. I suffered from fibromyalgia for 10 years, and after seeing this video I managed to take control of my life and heal. Now I'm pain free and Im currently writing a book about my healing journey. Thank you for saving my life.
Dr. Shubiner, my flare ups are excruciatingly painful yet you say part of the problem is our fear of the pain. How are we not to be afraid of the pain when it is agonizing. Do you have any availability for online therapy via zoom? I'm experiencing debilitating psycho-somatic pain and am desperately in need of one on one therapy. Is there any way you can help me?
Thank you for this, I have been clean for a little over 2 years from many different drugs.. I suffer from chronic pain and refuse to go to a doctor because I feel that not all doctors are as educated in this as they should be. I have been practicing yoga for about a year and it has helped tremendously, but I feel after gaining more knowledge from this video it will help me continue in the right direction.. I am so grateful for the people who made this video
I really believe Dr. Schubiner explanation of pain and nerve pathways does make sense. Pain is real both physical and emotional but what we do and how we deal with them can help or make things worse. Often times, as Dr. Schubiner explained in this video that when we have either acute or chronic pain, we tend to fear which leads to more pain and so and so forth. The brain does make this distinction whether the pain is bad or not and if the brain tells us this pain is bad then we tend to panic which and make things much worse than actually is. Fear is often false appearing real. We tend to create more pain by panicking and thus doing mindless medical treatment which often makes the symptoms worse like it did for me. Had I not gone to the hospitals and other health professionals for my injuries, I would have been fine but the fear and anxiety that I had made on my own, made the whole situation worse than actually is. SO PLZ DO NOT PANIC, have faith and confidence that you will be fine and let the time pass and you be be fine.

This is an excellent introduction on how pain that is felt in the body is processed in the brain, and what you can do to gain control over this process, and possibly relieve it completely. My personal experience with physical pain and anxiety/depression definitely confirms this. (Keep in mind, Dr. Schubiner states that he is talking about pain caused by neural pathways, not tissue damage.)
@bina nocht pain is definitely felt in the body even though it is created in the brain. You had it the wrong way round as I have very severe myofascial pain in my body which is created buy my brain there is no structural damage

yep. I'm really glad this helps some people but if your spine is crumbling and pressing on your nerves it's not because your bf was mean to you in high school

I have a physical tissue damage condition in my hips and back that cause chronic pain, but I totally believe that the stress on top of that, that I emotionally Deal with makes my pain so much worse! I didn’t have an awful childhood, but I have had over 25 years of chronic pain from this hip disease and back issues that have lead to other emotion stressful events throughout my life which I’m sure made new pathways that are now leading to my depression and anxiety on top of the increasing pain... it’s like a vicious cycle that I don’t know how to break! The physical damage I have will never go away, but I’d love to learn more about how to cope and maybe eliminate it subside some of the pain caused by the emotional stress on these pathways that may be causing the increase in pain. Pain meds just aren’t enough anymore to help and I refuse to take seriously strong narcotics... I love your explanation but so wish I could find a dr who understands this way of thinking that was willing to help me walk through these steps and get my life back! I feel like there’s no “worth” to my life... I live every day trying to fake it but many times feel like I can’t even do enough to fake it. Or days I do try to be “normal” I’ll overdo it and then I’m down again for a week or so recovering .... it’s also so hard to get people to understand what you’re going through when they can’t physically see what’s wrong. I envy those who don’t have chronic pain. I’ve been dealing with this hip pain since I was 10 and now at 35 and three hip replacements and back surgeries to try and help, and metal poisoning from the first hip replacement that left me with terrible nerve damage... I just feel like there’s no hope. I’m thankful just to be walking and know I’m lucky and that things could always be worse... but I’m just tired of fighting... I want to feel better .
Thank You Dr Howard Schubiner. Boy, do I have one heck of a snowball story. I thought for a moment you were using me as a case study! Thank you for your encouragement. You words at the end made me choke up with added hope. Bless You.
I got a bi-lateral brachial plexus nerve injury. I was injured in a yoga class - the second I did the injury I was getting nerve pain through both arms, shoulder and hands. This hasn't relented over the last three months. The stress is from the injury - my life was on the way to being as perfect as I could possibly make it before I got this injury. I've tried doing the writing, meditation etc. all interesting but not effective. The only thing that helps is amitriptyline and gabapentan.
I have only began exploring the ideas presented here but over the past 6 years I have had numerous physical symptoms that were bad enough for be to believe they were 100 percent tissue damage. I have had CT scans and MRI brain scans, plus nerve studies. Now, the strange thing with me is that for each pain episode I tended to get an epiphany moment where somehow I managed to fully accept that the pain was being created 100 percent with my own mind for reasons which are now becoming clear. Emotions such as fear create physical pain and as far as I can tell it can be anywhere, in fact with me it has not been my back but hands, legs, eyes, teeth and so on. In fact, my doctor told me that statistics show that up to 60 percent of patients do not show pathological causes for their pain when the best of testing is administered. Similarly, on my journey trying to solve pain, I ended up on the bench of an incredibly well respected physio and he totally agreed with what is being discussed here. In fact he told of seeing terrible MRI scans of backs where patients reported no pain. Finally, take a look at conversion disorder for proof that if you go looking for it your brain can find it

Leonie vd Bergh It does, but it can only do so much. If the body could heal itself from everything, we wouldn't have people dying from Cancer, AIDS, and other horrible diseases. Have you ever had an EMG or a Nerve Conduction Study done? (hopefully you haven't had to, they're awful). These studies can tell if any issues exist within the peripheral nervous system.

It’s worth a shot and if in the end no results of pain relief sprout from this a better mindset will. I’ve had chronic stomach pain since I was an infant that is a 24/7 thing maybe that sounds untrue or like I’m lying but I promise I’m not some of it sprouts from anxiety since even before my birth the home I was born into was extremely tense. I honestly am very skeptical of this method because I’ve tried mind over matter before but it hasn’t worked in past experiences but I wish all who try it the best of luck and results that allow you freedom from whatever pain holds you back

Yes, we are hoping to do studies llike that. There have been some fMRI studies that are similar, such as a recent study done in people with conversion disorders. I'm looking for collaborators who do this kind of study to work with. Howard Schubiner, MD
It's a great theory! I imagine the activation of learned pain pathways has implications for threat assessment to stimuli in the environment too ( and vice versa). The learned response of pain becomes a heuristic? Might reinvigorate cognitive behavioral therapy if so.

@@EmmaWalkeryou2015 I noticed that he didn't mention the pain caused by damage to the pain receptors in the brain. I have had MS for 16 years now, and the demyelination scarring is now noted as "innumerable " in my brain. I'm in constant pain that picks different parts of my body on different days. The worse is my limbs and neck, and of course the migraines. I've tried everything over the years, including biofeedback, accupressire, meditation, PT, injections into my spine, massage therapy, tens units and too many more to name. The only thing that helped at least temporarily was accupressire, which of course my insurance doesn't cover. Everything else made my symptoms worse. Especially the tens and injections. The meditation might have worked if I had not been in too much pain to do it. In the end, I have to say that only pain medications worked enough for me to function. I didn't need the really strong ones, but NSAIDS were useless. Since the new laws on pain meds and chronic pain, I was taken off my meds 2 years ago, and this was also after I had been in a serious auto accident that landed me in the hospital for a month. I had to have my r. Leg put back together, as it had shattered my knee and tibia, also tearing the bone from my knee. My leg is now full of plates and screws, and my last x ray showed severe scarring and arthritic changes in the knee. So now I've resorted to the NSAIDS to deal with the swelling and arthritis, but it takes so much for them to work that I have to wonder how long before my liver and or kidneys fail. It amazes me that Drs recommend them over pain medication, that when taken responsibly, have far fewer side effects. When mine were discontinued, I didn't suffer any withdrawal, I just felt the acute pain that they had been controlling. I never had my medicine increased in all the years that I took it, and always took it as prescribed, even if I was in pain, I waited until time to take my dose. It's the abusers that have screwed everything up for those of us who truly need it. And as for kids etc. getting into it, IT'S CALLED A LOCK BOX! Any parent who would leave any controlled substance just laying out for the taker is an idiot. Anyway, that's my soapbox and I plan to stay on it until realistic policies are put back into place.🤕🆘️😷
I live with chronic pain everyday - as do many of us. Tiny town where a Rheum appt is 5 months out. No pain medicine. Tired of being treated like a leper & drug seeker. I have diagnosed Ankylosing Spondylitis, "Fibro, some serious thyroid issues but that appt is 5 months out, & on top of it my inflammation levels are above 200. I sit here bawling because it hurts so bad to simply move, but I can't find a doctor to treat me enough to just relieve this pain for ONE DAY. Can't work. Can't even afford to pay bills, so counseling office helps. I am on fire. I seriously just wish I could die because this pain has taken my life, my hope, my dreams, my income, my friends, my family. So tired. It is just too much. It isn't right how doctors treat me or other pain sufferers.

Thank you for this explanation. Have had chronic pain for 8.5 years. This helps me even understand me a little better. Please read some Dr Sarno books, they are fast reads and fascinating, available at almost any library. I guarantee you will at least have reduction in pain symptoms. It worked for me, and I had a small army of doctors and therapists that could barely improve my condition. Then a small book (Mind Over Back Pain) changed my life, now I'm 95% pain and symptom free, and all it took was knowledge and some serious mind work that needed taking care of, that I did on my own. Now, I'm angry at all those doctors that actually made things worse and caused me to lose my job.

I have always known that my stress is the root of my pain. I have so much stress in my life. My daughter is 34 she has severe cerebral palsy. Ivan Kristovski first check if traction will relieve your pain, easy to do, inversion table, or raise, elevate, foot of bed about fifteen to eighteen inches, secure your feet to foot of bed, lay back straight on bed. First time sciatica, two months, almost constant, got around on crutches, exercise. Two reasons I use small car inner tube, tied to both ends of bed posts, then tied in middle, stick feet in sideways, straighten feet. Holds feet comfortable, elastic good to flex feet against, this helps, I think. I was sixty years gone. So, younger is better, faster, healing. Do not give up, improvement can be sudden. Do not neglect to stretch or it can come back, I made that mistake, so back to stretching, results, it helped again, not as well, of course, J.H
Wendy Callinan read reply to Ivan, hope this is not dismaying, cause of time it takes. Is important not to aggravate sciatica, crutches necessary sitting also is bad, a chair designed for sciatica, to hold upper body, take weight off lower back. Can also tilt bed, head higher, secure upper body, alternate. Condriten, collagens supplements . Do not have to be extreme traction, just so you feel a stretch and pain subsides. Comfortable bed important, adjust your bed and sleep stretched, or as long as can. If this is effective for you, pass it on, remember heard it here first. J.H

I hear what you're saying & understand how some people can get caught up in a loop in spite of their ailments healing, but not sure how this can explain my Degenerative Disc Disease (can it?) That's not in my mind and it's hard to see how I can think myself out of these physical ailments. why would my current bout of sciatica which resulted from sneezing too hard, have anything to do with my broken childhood? did I ever get back pain as a child? no have I ever had back pain before not really. I'm new to sciatica and it's slowly improving with time and sometimes it hurts like hell so I can only imagine what poor people with chronic pain must be going through. it is kind of insulting to them to suggest that their pain is anything to do with emotional stress experienced throughout life. why do scientists try to explain things they don't understand the mechanisms for just to give us a half hearted explanation because science can't seem to find a cure. the nerves can get damaged or pinched in my case. the brain interprets this pain so we need to find a way to block that pain or repair/remove the damaged nerve or another alternative therapy. I can guarantee you that talking to a therapist about my broken childhood is not going to relieve my sciatica.
nicholasp Then you have not read the book "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. What these doctors are not telling you is that we are holograms. That means our thoughts are images and resonate through our bodies changing them constantly. We are 100% energy holograms proven by quantum physics. We are NOT solid. Our minds constantly create these bodies that are not solid.
Hardey The thing about quantum physics that is a secret is that we are holograms always being created each moment. To look back reinforces the thought processes of a time that has already moved on. Why not be in the present with each thought, knowing that we are eternal, multidimensional, holographic, electromagnetic energy light beings? Each thought is an image that immediately flows through the holographic body changing it constantly. We are completely 100% energy, conscious energy. I have proved this to myself. When symptoms come on, like what are called flu symptoms, I then know that I am stressed out about something. So, whether or not I know what this stress is, i can immediately tell myself that I am feeling good now. This is an image that the whole body resonates into being. Works for me. Read the book "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. There are a lot of books on the market with this subject. Hands of Light was published in 1987. There are a lot of pictures in this book of what we look like out of these bodies. Brennan sees people as holograms. She has developed that skill and has built several colleges to teach it. And if you think that we are not holograms, and if we are, then why don't we know this? Read the book "War Against the Weak" written by Black. There are a lot of trillionaires that don't want us to know this, so it is not focused upon in public schools. Watch the utube "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed". Professors are being fired for just mentioning the words creation and creationism. Trillionaires need for the status quo to stay where it is so that the people will not revolt. They like their trillion dollars even if it keeps the rest of us sick. Watch the utube "Behind the Smoke Curtain: The 9/11 Pentagon Attack" created by Barbara Honegger. She names the nazis that bombed the Pentagon and they work within the U.S. government. Read the article at countercurrents.org. This professor that wrote the article heard the way many people talked that were graduated from the University of Chicago. They speak like nazis. He tells people to stay away from this University because many in the science law department are taught the thoughts of Strauss and or Schmitt who are hard core nazi leaders. Read the book "Rise of the Fourth Reich" by Marrs. Or the "Trillion Dollar Conspiracy" by Marrs. There are all kinds of reasons why people are allowed to stay in pain. Big pharma is run by trillionaires that don't care about people. Think nazis. They were cruel to people during WWII, right? There are many corporations that agree with nazi philosophy and funded Hitler's war. The Dulles brothers, Ford, J.P. Morgan, Bush Senior Prescott, IBM, etc, etc, etc,. Any corporation that believes in solidity is most likely to think that there are too many people in the world and are taking steps to kill as many people as possible. Look at the water. Toxic wastes are being bought and sold to people in the tap water. Read the book "The Case Against Fluoride." I have read many books where the subject is placebos. Turns out all pills and therapies are placebos. Hard to believe, but true. Since we are not solid, then we are holograms, intense, complicated non solid energy beings. Created in the image of God. So, therefore, God is a holodeck. Makes sense to me. What is prayer but imagery? All of this is proven by quantum physics from a long time ago. Max Planck won a Nobel Prize in physics. There is a quote online of what he says about existence: "All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force... We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter." This mind is what people call God. We are saturated with and immersed in fields of waves which might as well be God's brain waves. How else is the kingdom of God within you? This means we are always being created as perfect patterns. Any other thoughts that are out of balance resonate the belief in solidity, which is the core of all pain. After all, death is dependent on solidity and solidity does not exist.
The day before you injured your sciatica, you had EXACTLY the same psychological make-up - and no pain. The day after - severe pain. Nothing had changed other than the injury. It's an insult to patients frankly. What we need badly - are better drugs than opiates, anti-depressants and anti-epileptics that currently 'treat' nerve pain. I personally think that if we can find drugs to treat neuropathic pain, we'll also have the 'cure' for all severe forms of pain.
As a very proactive patient trying to relieve, control, understand my chronic pain ,I consider myself an expert in pain doctors.!! Many have valid points , many have partially valid points. Still if I put you all together ,you still don't understand the how ,why, and fix of pain. The damn thing hurts like hell the time ! So which neuron is screwed up ,or if I don't sleep well ,or the 30 operations I've been put thru count for anything ,look at your patient. If you can test responsibly , take the time to listen hear ,and trust what they're saying, let them help you find what's needed to at least function as a human .If it's medicine ,screw the govt. if it's surgery find a way to do it etc. But help them help themselves too. It's NOT only in ones mind , it's like chasing mercury .Corral what you can by any means ,as the alternative is just torturous .

As mom of kids ; I have pain this 2 years from Doctor to doctor even I did spinal surgery with no results , and I’m still with pain and pressure around my pelvic , tailbone, rectum and anus , buttocks; with hernia disc and imbalance of muscles when sitting and high tension in my head …. All these symptoms pain stoped me to come back to work and to get job and I become with no income …. And I hope one of Doctor for TMS pain free body helps me for free because of my bad financial situation please!! I live in Illinois 😢🙏🏻
All of my pain is caused simply by nerve damage. It has nothing to do with my fear and depression but in fact the pain causes fear and depression. It does not make my pain worse. Anyone in Chronic Pain will experience emotional problems. For most it is not an emotional trauma that causes severe pain but the actual physical damage to nerves. Doctors can't fix nerves so blame the patient by saying it is all in their head.
+SuperNewf1 I recommend " explain pain" David Butler and Lorimer Moseley. Also watch you tube: the role of the brain in chronic pain by Lorimer Moseley and: the pill box in the brain by David Butler.
+Leonie vd Bergh My point is doctors should treat the pain instead of saying things like "It is all in your head" or "there is nothing they can do about that", which implies the patient is somehow mentally disturbed. A good excuse this is for not paying for treatment such as massage therapy, hydrotherapy, and prescribing strong pain pills. Doctors are sending patients home in severe pain and this pain is literally killing them from sleep deprivation and high blood pressure and suicides. But the insurance companies get to keep their money right? Yes right. We have so many corrupted and ignorant doctors out there now because they all hang onto this it's all in your head bullshit and they are killing their patients with this ignorance and neglect. By the way I have diagnosed axillary nerve damage with muscle wasting in my shoulder, a pinched sciatic nerve, and a damaged peroneal nerve that causes my foot to drop, and circumflex nerve damage. I am partially paralyzed and experience cramps and great severe pain upon walking or doing any physical activity. In fact I am totally disabled from any type labour work of a strenuous and repetitive variety. But no one can see that if I am calmly sitting in a chair. This is how the insurance companies and their corrupt doctors deny claims for Chronic Pain. This is how they kill their patient with severe pain not being treated. Basically if a patient has nerve damage and says they experience pain in that area then it is valid pain and not the imagination of a nutcase. When doctors learn this to treat pain we will get treated properly so we can get on with our lives. I'm an expert on pain. Although not a doctor I have had 36 years of dealing with Chronic Pain and am certified by the A.M.A. in the treatment of pain, and considered an expert patient. For sure doctors are using this psychological model to deny claims and further injuring the patient by doing so. But then these incompetent and malicious doctors get a good bonus for cutting off medical care and financial aid to those suffering in agony.
SuperNewf1 I think you're right lately I feel I've been dying from little sleep and pain and blood pressure it's real man no bullshit anyone who knows knows it's no joke. and I even mean that I take low dose pain medicine only for pain specifically CRPS
This is valid. It is only valid so far as it goes. For me the list of the symptoms that are in the category of fear and anxiety are definitely important and pain impactful. That said they represent the peak of the pyramid and not the base. Reinforced experiential pain is real and is probably an inflammatory response to friction on tissue. Mind over matter just isn't valid in these circumstances. Promoting this can be hurtful as it tends to reinforce the old "its all in your mind" thinking. I dont think this doc intends that though and for calming fear and anxiety, if one can do it with practice instead of pills then more power to ya. Fear, anxiety, panic are all bad stress.
Tried the Dr. Sarno thing, I have massive arthritis and failed back surgery. Some things help , but going without the pills can cause someone to have a stroke or a NDE. I did, it was horrible.

This chronic pain is horrible disease I have ever seen I have lower back pain and testicular its 5 years still I live with pain I took alot of medication I went Mr scan. The result was I have herniated disc thats not unnecessary to make surgical. But my testicular pain is killing me. 24 hours pain sometimes I don't sleep. Before this problem happens I was planning to get married. But after this problem happened. I stopped ever things except my work I became sadness person. I Only thinks how to get well. my life became darkst.i pray one day will heal my body I believe the faith. But my question is. does chronic pain can cause death?
For those people who are saying that their spines are “crumbling” or “too damaged”, please google the article, Systematic Literature Review of Imaging Features of Spinal Degeneration in Asymptomatic Populations. We have too many surgeons (neurosurgeons and orthopedists) who believe that all pain has a structural cause and then scare patients not unnecessary treatments and surgeries. PLEASE understand that tissues heal! After 6 months the tissues the were initially hurt and the cause of the acute pain episode have healed and the pain the patient continues to experience is due to a sensitive nervous system (peripheral and central).
+David Jamison if you follow his "logic", it's really because your Father never loved you....and that's why you can't handle the pain emanating from the tissue damage. This is interesting but also misleading as to how to deal with legitimate chronic pain.
+Joe Schmoe +David Jamison I think that Doctor Schubiner would never deny that pain can originate with a physical issue. He specifically addresses the sorts of pain that that sometimes seem to persist after the physical issue has resolved or can be tied to a specific physical issue. You always need to get physical issues resolved.
When you know about or read any of Dr Schubiner's work, you will not come away thinking that he is an "all in your head" physician. He is trained as an MD and is certified as an internist with a specialty in adolescent health and as such has a nuanced view.

The pain pathways ring true for me but for office workers with back pain like myself, the pain is strongly linked to sitting down for so long and losing muscle tone that supports posture. Nothing to do with a traumatic childhood.
Well I think in your case Dr Schubiner might suggest take two doses of common sense and stop back in six months. 1)regular exercise and 2)standing at your desk.
It is gotta do with stress and possibly a perfectionist or goodist nature that is shaped by childhood. When I was in corporate world, my back, neck and shoulders hurt terribly and so are of my friends. I exercised, did yoga and yet symptoms were there. My friends had pain that could not be relieved by medication. After I left the corporate world, I had to do more physical work (cleaning, lifting buckets of water, housework) and yet surprisingly my back, neck and shoulders were no longer killing me.
Mike, too bad you deleted my post. If it was not you, then I apologize. It agreed with dr schubiners findings and may have helped many people, as it helps me and many others.
I'm sorry, but the idea that I can "unlearn" my pain is preposterous. Now, I can understand that, possibly, this may be true in some cases, but to lump all of us chronic pain sufferers in with a stress headache sufferer is a slap in the face. I have been fighting for at least 20 years to have my pain from Fibromyalgia validated. I'm under no true stress, I'm financially stable, happily married, children are grown and happy. The only real stress I have is the constant pain I'm in, and that only came about AFTER the pain became intolerable.
The problem is classification. There is ample medical evidence supporting changes in nerve function and the spinal chord in chronic pain sufferers. There may be a portion of sufferers who have symptoms brought on by stress - but that is probably a significant minority. I get somewhat exasperated by many of these experts - I wonder if they'd allow me to inflict a nerve injury on them to allow them to really test their theories.
The thing about quantum physics that is a secret is that we are holograms always being created each moment. Tony Sinatra yup. Don’t listen to these skeptics in the comments. They can’t accept that the medical system can be wrong . Medical system has been wrong about chronic pain for decades. Let’s take a look at how they’ve been wrong in history. 1) cigarettes are good for you 2) pregnant women should drink wine 3)disease is caused by demons 4)shall I go on??

I also eliminated my brutal pelvic pain that lasted for years and was supposedly incurable thanks to Dr Shubiners and Dr Sarnos books.
Hi Kaitlin, just wanted to see how you have progressed over the past 2 yrs and do you still have relapses.

Thank you. I am a hypnotherapist and I tell my clients with stress/anxiety issues about the very exact thing. This video clearly explains the details.

Dr. Shubiner, my flare ups are excruciatingly painful yet you say part of the problem is our fear of the pain. How are we not to be afraid of the pain when it is agonizing. Thank you for this, I have been clean for a little over 2 years from many different drugs.. One of the best vidoes about mind with body reaction in pain management. Thanks lot doctor

Great video you just described my wife she is in chronological pain since she was 13

Such eloquent talk.
Finally, take a look at conversion disorder for proof that if you go looking for it your brain can find it

this person is very knowledgable .. it all makes sense. many of the doctors dont understand these. and this lack of knowledge and understanding causes further fear of the pain and etc that he just explained well.
Such a clear explanation
I have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome .My pain is 24/7 sometimes it's so bad .Having chronic pain is Terrible...It's amazing how your describing a lot of what I go through....A family member that is in the medical field was saying to take ( Oxytocin) this is huge for pain ...( my Doctor is going to try and get this for me..I hope this can help others...Take care
Get oxytocin naturally

Dr. Schubiner is our hero!
Dr. Blumenthal, is it possible to stop my severe, chronic pain due to Cervical Dystonia? I'm overly sensitive to Botox treatments, which just causes me more pain. I'm going to a methadone treatment ctr due to Colorado's new law disallowing methadone for pain. According to Colorado law, I went from being a pain patient to being an addict.
Thank you so much, for the wonderful explanation. I wish so much should take less then 10 min. to watch patients eyes and suggest that possibility.
What techniques can make the pain go away?
BEAUTIFULLY EXPLAINED. THANKS
Brilliant - Thank you and this kind doctor for sharing such critical information.
I have much gratitude for the work you have done.
I do not even talk about my Pain anymore, cause its just what my life is a ball of pain, and im in bed mostly all day.

Soooo...I was scared as a kid 70+ years ago and I get back pain pathways just now? Really???
What about extreme body tension?
Good video! Thank You! Walking, mind body, PT, stretching then meds! 6 yrs since the car crash and Getting up get going. it hurts! but so much less if i get up and move did i say WALKING! Never say die! If i hurt laying down kills me, get moving Walking! Mind body Think about other things. It takes a while to learn but works! Thanks for the info!!! Great!
Encouraging words. The first step seems the toughest.

I have a back pain and muscles pain due to my osteoporosis
Our 6 year old son had a farm accident and had his leg amputated. He started off really well, but now at 6 months he has chronic pain all day, every day. He is currently in hospital where the plan is to create new neurological pathways to try and stop his pain.
Aw I hope your son recovers
I have cfs/me also had lyme. Now for diagnosed with eds. I have damage in the sense I have severe bone loss in jaw of sonlmeone age 65 I'm 40. I am loosing teeth fast. Can fear and anxiety tms cause this?
But my pain is from tissue damage so there’s nothing I can do for that ?
I appreciate the posting thank you
What happens when the nerve pathways are damaged?
+AEO Shea your body is alive and has a build in healing system.
These studies can tell if any issues exist within the peripheral nervous system.

good stuff! Im an LMBT and I actually use this information in Mindbody therapy. Though its a tad different its the same. Ex. Someone comes in with a chronic injury do to car accent several years ago. They have no idea why the pain never goes away. Usually something traumatic happened that has stored in injury. So in my therapy I facilitate a place to process injury....etc.
over 12years with chronic pain so i ask of you. layman results of therapy

Other causes of chronic pain are due to environmental toxins, heavy metals. Vaccinations, Lyme disease, nutrient defiencies, etc.
Interesting...I'd love to see some research done in this area, like glucose studies..see if we can actually validate this properly.
Let me ping Howard Schubiner (*****)

I'm having issues with workers comp in CA taking away pain meds now because of new law from last year. My pain is real and not just neuropathic like they say. Too bad they can't watch this too.

i did not hear the effects of lymph nodes removal, pain definitely becomes chronic. more research should be done about nerve damage
I hear what you're saying & understand how some people can get caught up in a loop in spite of their ailments healing, but not sure how this can explain my Degenerative Disc Disease (can it?) I have an Xray and multiple MRIs that show bone spurs, disc and spine deterioration along with trapped nerve roots. That's not in my mind and it's hard to see how I can think myself out of these physical ailments.
I've read John Sarno's book and am thinking of buying Explain Pain but unless this is like hypnotherapy and can trick my brain into believing there is no pain, I'm not sure this will help me.

why would my current bout of sciatica which resulted from sneezing too hard, have anything to do with my broken childhood? did I ever get back pain as a child? no have I ever had back pain before not really.
How can you guarantee that with complete ignorance on the subject?

Then you have not read the book "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan. What these doctors are not telling you is that we are holograms. That means our thoughts are images and resonate through our bodies changing them constantly. We are 100% energy holograms proven by quantum physics. We are NOT solid. Our minds constantly create these bodies that are not solid.
Hardey
The thing about quantum physics that is a secret is that we are holograms always being created each moment.
Read the book "The Case Against Fluoride."
I have read many books where the subject is placebos. There is a quote online of what he says about existence:
"All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force... We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter."
This mind is what people call God.
@@pureenergy5051 fuck off with your shitty holograms
The day before you injured your sciatica, you had EXACTLY the same psychological make-up - and no pain. The day after - severe pain. Nothing had changed other than the injury. It's an insult to patients frankly. What we need badly - are better drugs than opiates, anti-depressants and anti-epileptics that currently 'treat' nerve pain. I personally think that if we can find drugs to treat neuropathic pain, we'll also have the 'cure' for all severe forms of pain.
I would like to know who decides "Recommended for you? "

When did this Dr say it was in your head? You're assuming. Pay better attention.
SuperNewf1 I think you're right lately I feel I've been dying from little sleep and pain and blood pressure it's real man no bullshit anyone who knows knows it's no joke. and I even mean that I take low dose pain medicine only for pain specifically CRPS

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!

Genius,. Integrity. Compassion. Thank you so much. Finally I understand.
Amazing
and what ideas do you have for chronic pain caused by tissue damage?
+David Jamison if you follow his "logic", it's really because your Father never loved you....and that's why you can't handle the pain emanating from the tissue damage. This is interesting but also misleading as to how to deal with legitimate chronic pain.
+Joe Schmoe +David Jamison I think that Doctor Schubiner would never deny that pain can originate with a physical issue. He specifically addresses the sorts of pain that that sometimes seem to persist after the physical issue has resolved or can be tied to a specific physical issue. You always need to get physical issues resolved.
David Jamison He specifically said tissue damage resolves itself & refuses to comment if it doesn't.....look at the comment section above.
Ketamine infusion therapy have shown promising results for chronic pain.
The theory is that it helps you reverse the pain pathways.
When you know about or read any of Dr Schubiner's work, you will not come away thinking that he is an "all in your head" physician.
He is trained as an MD and is certified as an internist with a specialty in adolescent health and as such has a nuanced view.

Why don't you include surgery? Scar tissue.
Great work
Now I see joes comment has been removed too.
Lisa Jones who was joe?
Well.. I believe this is just a theory. Not truth.
It is corroborated by scientific research. Thus, a Doctor would label it true.
Quantum theory, Evolution and gravity are also "just theories", btw.
BS. I am a massage therapist, and have never had 1 patient that I could not feel the pain in the area they were describing...not 1 in 20 years
I'm not crazy then
Kuksugare
wow very good
I'm sorry, but the idea that I can "unlearn" my pain is preposterous.
Read the book "The Case Against Fluoride."
I have read many books where the subject is placebos. There is a quote online of what he says about existence:
"All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force... We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent Mind. This Mind is the matrix of all matter."
This mind is what people call God.
Anyone who formulates an educated video on a chronic pan or a PERPETUAL sensation in the human body that WON’T STOP, has never experienced it. this is just opinions bro. You don’t know doc. The way I see it... no one in this world truly understands the ramifications of something until you physically FEEL it. There’s gonna be a guy who says well it’s this, it’s that. Dude... stop. This guy would cry if he lived one day in the life of someone suffering
Patrick Enewally I've been through it and came out of the other side using these techniques.
He’s actually been a chronic pain patient before
Tony Sinatra yup.
He had chronic pain and has mind body syndrome. He understands because he lived it and sought a solution
Broke my back TWICE. Sorry buddy, this happy go lucky crap is worthless for folks with 4 collapsing discs.
Tech
I have found out that people are holograms. That means our thoughts are images. These images constantly resonate through our bodies changing them. I have healed myself several times by changing my thoughts. During pain I tell myself that I feel wonderful. I imagine how wonderfulness feels. Then this hologram called a body responds to these images and becomes what i imagine. I am ONE with this holographic body. I have read this in several books. My favorite is "Hands of Light" written by the physicist Barbara Brennan.
Since we are not solid, but instead imagery, then you can heal your back. Read books about healing with imagery. Another great book is "Healing Yourself" by Rossman M.D.
Of fucking course it isnt physological shit if your fucking back is broken
