@@death_parade Actually I made a mistake. Yes, every manufacturer has to provide a safety valve in pressure cookers. I used pressure cookers a long time ago in 2011 and 2012 and those pressure cookers had no safety valve. Rules were not strongly enforced back then.
Working in cooker industry from past 5 years , and This happened due to wrong cooker lid ( they must have 2 identical cookers from different companies ) ,not over pressure because if this was over pressure safety valve should have worked but instead whole lid got detached , either due to wrong lid or aged rubber

Safety valves are designed to save you from mishaps, if safety valve failed to burst , you can file a case in consumer court , and sue the company, if you win , a hefty amount can be awarded to you , just make sure its the company original safety valve

Exactly.. Weight clogging is at fault. Safety valve is not there to prevent bursts at all times. Its just a safety mechanism to release the pressure at a certain threshhold(limit). It might get fooled if the weight gets clogged with contents in cooker and if its not cleaned regularly.
Apart from the safety hazard and the fact that the lady was lucky enough (seemingly) to escape without any major injuries, that is going to be one hell of a cleaning job. Like, it's gonna take days for the owners to sort this mess out.
@Fatima Been there, done that 😀... The problem is the rice and dal literally stick to the walls and ceilings. It dries very fast as well, as it cools down. So you gotta really scrub it off, as it sticks to the paint. Then, up until the 3rd day, we kept finding newer spots where the rice or dal was trapped...
The cause of this accident happens when the cooker's whistle is not working properly. Use the whistle provided for your cooker as the weight of the whistle is set according to the size of the cooker. For example, a whistle provided for a 5 ltr cooker should not be used in a 2 ltr or 3 ltr cooker because the pressure in 2 or 3 ltr cooker is much less than a 5 ltr cooker. So when you use a heavier whistle on it, the pressure is blocked inside. But to prevent this they give a small hole in the pressure cooker for emergency pressure released If any small object gets stuck in the pressure cooker whistle hole then the pressure will escape through the emergency hole, protecting the cooker and if it also does not work, the cooker will explode. In all pressure cooker water boils at 120°C at sea level and at 1 atm outer pressure. So rectify your physics knowledge before showering Gyan on others. Pressure is force per unit area, so total force is different but pressure is same. So same weight is used for different volume if cross section of whistle pin hole is same. But if different whistle pin hole is used for different volume then whistle weight will be different.

This usually happens when nozzle is unclean or cooker is filled more than 2/3rd. Check pressure valve n change if older than two years. N turn the gas off immediately in any case of confusion n check the cooker.

That's is why it is very very important to clean whistle and whistle attachment nozzle properly. I regularly do it with help of thin metal wire and water pressure.
Definately Dal or rice would've have been stucked in the whistle...always thoroughly clean it before putting on gas. And avoid outerlid cookers, always use innerlid cookers of good brands like usha, united, hawkins. My mother always taught- whenever you feel cooker is taking long time to build pressure, always pull up the whistle, there might be something stucked in the whistle...otherwise pressure will keep building inside & next is💥💥💥

Sous Chef here... I never have needed to use a pressure cooker. I am willing to take the time with any food to make it right. No need to rush a delicious smelling meal cooking. In fact one my secrets is slow caramelized onions. Takes a long time and constant attention. The reward is seeing people's faces light up after eating a good burger with the caramelized onions. Time is an investment in a good meal. Food is life.

Valves will not work if all the water is evaporated and the pressure is purely built out of hot air. So please make sure you have enough water inside, and don’t overlook the time length of cooking.

What a coincidence!!!??? Today the cooker didn't whistle even after 20-25 minutes. I was worried but finally it whistled thrice only for 1 second or so I waited for the fourth one. But there was no sound for almost 5 minutes. When I kept thinking about what to do the safety valve broke open and the entire kitchen got messed up. This happened for the first time in 8 years of my cooking experience. I thanked God and the safety valve. My recipe got completely spoiled but nothing serious happened.

I have always used extreme caution with any pressure cooker. Super heated steam releases extreme air pressure. Same principle used on all steam engines and turbine's.
That literally happened maybe 4 5 years back my mom was cooking daal and the thing maybe the whistle was somehow got blocked by daal particles coz everytime she used to clean and properly check it . The explosion it had the whistle made a hole in the aluminium shade and went somewhere and never came back.
Never cook hard tiny objects like dal right in the cooker. You have to get a small vessel that fits inside the cooker well, then put the dal in that vessel with water, then put that vessel in the cooker with water around it. This way the dal is cooked at the same time dal won't get into the whistling nozzle.

Always use a needle to clean the steam channel on which the weight is placed.
If the steam channel is clogged it will burst
not if the safety valve is working
Safety valve is there to prevent this. But it might be faulty in this case. They can get a warranty and health claim upon contacting cooker company.

Is it branded? I have used both Hawkins and Prestige. My wife and I blew the saftey a few times because we didn't knew exact use but it never blasted.
