  • This is part 1 of my series on tower basics. In this first video, I give a brief introduction to Science Olympiad tower building and outline what I'll cover throughout the entire 5-part series.

First guesses before watching video. I reckon 1 will do poorly, possibly undergoing a twisting failure.
2 will do rather well, being only 0.02g more but the triangles resisting twisting and the tower being steep enough that the bottom tension square is not needed to stop the legs splaying. For pure strength I think 3 and 6 but they are quite a bit heavier that 5 could hold more for its weight and 4 being stronger than 2 but only slightly. My money is on 2 being the best strength to weight ratio but 3 being the strongest overall.

Hi! Your channel has been the key to my bridge this last season and I wanted to say thanks!

Thanks!! I really appreciate feedback like this, it definitely keeps me motivated to create new videos! Good luck this season with towers if you are still competing

hi i was just wondering if paulownia could be used instead of balsa as ive heard that its strength is great and it is also lighter

I've never used it, but just looking it up online, it says it has a density of around 260 kg/m^3. The balsa range which is really good for what we build is typically around 100 kg/m^3.

Is there a template for printing an assembly jig?

Hi! I have all links to the jig STL parts for this season available to download in the description of the Intro video: th-cam.com/video/ECcz3T6fzPg/w-d-xo.html
