- Today is a new series that I thought would be fun: “1 Pattern 2 Figures.” I made my friend Jenni and I each the same dress in different fabrics so we could have a comparison!

There used to be a channel called Pattern Pals. Three ladies of very different body types and styles would all sew and review the same pattern. The comparison really showed the pattern possibilities. So I was excited for your side by side review.

I would love if you would do a short tutorial on using border prints and how to cut them on different patterns. I often shy away from them because of pattern and cutting placements.

I love how you compared shapes. I get annoyed when it's 2 girls that have the same build same height but ones fat. The dresses both looked great. I bet your friend loved getting a nice dress☺

Both dresses are very nice. I think the fabric placement on the skirt of Jenny's dress is especially interesting because it looks like godets at the sides. Good job on the first time modeling session, Jenny. I like the idea of different body shapes with the same pattern. I'm shorter than you at 4'11" (and definitely shorter than Jenny!!!) but a pear shape so I love seeing other shapes. Thanks

Very nice idea Whitney! That’s one of the things I love about sewing, it is the same patterns but with a different sleeve and fabric it looks so different. I purchased and made this pattern after I saw your make for your family photos. I wanted to make a cheap Christmas dress so made mine is made from quilting cotton. It is a little stiff but the style does look great on. I made the short sleeve and skirt combo with the giant pockets. Love the giant pockets. I bought a lovely drapery rayon to make a long sleeve maxi version but haven’t got to it yet and probably won’t for a while now it’s winter.
That’s good to hear about the pockets. I haven’t made one with the pockets yet, but think I might need one!

These two dresses look lovely on both of you. I made the Allie Olsen Highland Wrap Dress in a polyester for a wedding I attended recently. It's a lovely pattern as well. The skirt is not a full as this one which suits me. I've also made it into a tunic length top for the Spring as well. This one is made from Rayon.

This was great fun Whitney! You both do look lovely in your dresses which is quite a tribute to the pattern. I've shied away from this pattern because of those drop shoulders and baggie sleeves. I'm worried about gaping across the front too extraordinaire. I also tend to avoid so much waist emphasis in a pattern just in principle. I loved your makes but I remain unconvinced for myself. I love this idea for a series though and look forward to seeing more makes on different bodies! Ask one of your friends who is about 5" taller :)

Hi Witney, I am a big fan of yours! Did you do a full bust adjustment for yourself on this elodie? I am getting ready to cut out one for my busty daughter with a 3" bust difference. Thanks for sharing your expertise and all your wonderful makes with us!
I have a 4" upper/full bust difference and I did an FBA on this. However, I think I could have gotten away without one as there is quite a bit of ease in the bodice.

The colour of your dress is "eucalypt". I've been on the fence about this dress but no longer! Do you have an affiliate link for the pattern? Impatient for the style arc sew along, I haven't bought the pattern yet and still thinking about effective fabric designs so that it doesn't look like a nightie on me 🤣. Possibly one of Nerida Hansen's giant ginghams or a large scale print from material difference. Your pattern placement skills are truly ninja.
I don’t have an affiliate for this pattern, but it is a great one! The Monty will go up two weeks from today. I think it would be gorgeous in a large scale gingham!
You look made for the dress - the 'drab' green is gorgeous but I'ld call the color dusty sage. I really also think the sleeves in the longer length is a'10'. Good choice once again. What style and fabric does your sister get? I don't know if you have an inside door to Closet Core but I would be more tempted to buy the pattern if they were more appealing to my eye. Am I wrong? I don't want to be critical. I usually take your advice anyway - you talented one!

I bought this pattern but I’m not sure that it will be flattering on me...I’m an apple shape. Yours are lovely!
I’m an Apple, too, and also a rectangle. It is hard to find something flattering.
I’m also a rectangle and I think the wrap helps to give a waist where I don’t have one. I have a very good friend who is also an apple and her Elodie turned out beautifully. You might be surprised!

I wish I could, but since Closet Core sells classes on their patterns, I don't do sew alongs with their patterns (so I don't step on any toes!).

I did do an FBA on my version (I'm pretty sure it was 1" on each side for a total of 2" across the front).

You didn't mention it, but I was curious if you did an FBA for yours? I have never done one on a Dorman sleeve, but I am fairly certain I am gonna need one. Any advice?
Because there is so much ease in the bodice, I didn't do a true FBA. I just added length to the front for it to go over my bust, but I really didn't need to do that. Since I am doing all tutorials this summer on Sundays, I can add a dolman FBA to that list!

Is it true that the drape is the same whether you cut it on the cross grain or lengthwise? I bought a cotton remnant with cross grain stripes that I wish went the other way, but concern about the drape has me wondering how to use it.
You can cut pieces with the straight grain or cross grain. I find there is little difference in the drape and use them pretty interchangeably with wovens (knits obviously need the greatest stretch going around the body).
Question off topic...
I had a thick terry knit skew out of square during washing. Do I try to stretch it back straight then cut out my pattern? Or, do I place the pattern pieces (Closet Core Plateau Joggers) on the “new Grainline” and then cut out. (I am afraid if I straighten it out it will go back off grain again with each wash.). Do you have any advice?
I would pull it back on grain and then either sew or serge the cut ends together (fold your fabric so your salvages are together). This should help “set” the fabric back on grain. You may find that your legs twist with wear if you cut them off grain. Also, with knits, cutting the selvages off before laying out your pieces can help the fabric stay on grain better. Often, the selvages will pull in the fabric (since they are knit tighter) and it can skew things as well!
