  • I dug this out by hand many years ago so I could have a secure storage at a retreat location. Its 12x15 in the main room. It has 5 foot of dirt covering the main room. I store food and survival goods here. Iam changing out the door and adding on to it. The cost was 0. The telephone poles where free, blocks for floor came from mobile home mover that just wanted them removed from a site. I covered the whole structure with 3 large commerical tarps that where free, the guy was moving from the country to the city and didnt need them. So just alot of labor.

The old VietCong trick is to light fires inside after the place is dug out in order to harden the clay that the bunker was dug into. It only works with clay soil, and requires forced air in order for the fire to keep going, but apparently they were able to harden the tunnels of Cu Chi to the point that they were practically the same as being made from brick. They still give tours of the place, decades after being bombed by B52s.

Hope the shelter can survive in extreme temperature. All that wood could burn and produce a lot of toxic fumes if there isn't enough earth above them. When I was growing up my dad and my brother and myself dug a fallout shelter with a 2.5 foot steel reinforced concrete slab over the top of a room very similar to that room. We also dug a pocket next to it and buried a 200 gallon stainless steel tank plumbed to the water main so we would have fresh water as long as the water main maintained pressure. We made an air release that would allow air into the tank to allow water flow when the tank lost pressure. We also ran electrical down into the room for lights and a couple ventilator shaft pumps with air filters. The whole system was disguised as a patio in our backyard. We used the spare room eventually to raise tropical fish since the room stayed a constant 74 degrees which was ideal. That was all in place by the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. But since then the house has been sold and I don't know who bought the home but I hope they learned the secrets. My neighbor dug a room under his house which had a concrete floor, he thought he really had something, until he realized in a real nuclear war the fire of his house from the heat of a nuclear blast would cook whoever was in the room just like a potato under a campfire. So be aware that unless the top of the shelter is protected from wood or anything flammable piling on top of it. It could be a very large burial site for all people inside. I mention this because not many people take this into consideration and place their fallout shelter in their basement.

Great Video thanks, Just 2 points from things I learned, one get a string of led lights to guide in and out, cheap and can be solar powered, never make the dirt above the bunker higher than the floor to ceiling height, install a ceiling trap door with pull chain for a emergency exit. Still remains concealed but works by gravity, the other thing i saw was a outside chain to get inside access in case of a accidental cave in, just the medic and soldier in me, always have a way out! Great Job!!!!

Right on. If you decide to build another one in a different location, shipping containers work really well to bury in the ground. You can put two together and really open up some area. I admire your resolve and preparedness. I 'dream' of making a Bug Out Shelter and have contemplated going underground like you have. Finding the right location is not easy. Where I live, most of the good secluded places are hard to dig in due to all the quartz and other rock. I just about need a jackhammer. Do you have any advice where to dig where there will be less rock? I thought of going by a river, but then you have the threat of flooding.

@CitySurvivalist I really dont want to add any money into it so I will leave it along and spend my money on building a new one with concrete. the roof is made of telephone poles so they are heavy duty and still in great shape. It has served its purpose of hiding vital survival gear while I was stationed in other parts of the US. So right now its just a bonus storage for food. Hopefully soon I will have a better one and I can move my supplies.

@SpecialEd0531 Yes they are treated with a chemical. They have no smell unless you cut into them so no big problem. These ones are older ones so whatever chemical is going to come out has already come out way before I got them. The vents help also. But your right if you use new ones you would smell them for awhile.

@BoxedPchannel I will have to disagree with you. 3 feet of dirt provides a factor of 1000 compared to if you where on the surface with no protection. There is also the 7/10 principle when it comes to time.

very cool great idea as a temporary bug out to location....you have given me some ideas...as my permanent bug out is several hundred miles from where I live and work...I need to work on maybe a couple of closer bug out shelters between here and there...fuel, food and a place to hide if need be....great job and I like the low cost....

I am sure if you have all that, you are very capable of defending it. I think a lot of people would agree with me on that. Being prepared is more than just putting food back. Another excellent video and thanks for taking the time to share it...... ECP

This is awesome. Wish I could do it, but the sand would kill me.
The thing I would recommend is lowering the exhaust pipe, though, because carbon dioxide is heavier than oxygen and will collect when prolonged breathing in there.

Awesome vid! One suggestion though. I would think about maybe putting up some "Hasty" shoring. We have a lot of clay areas in Wisconsin here as well but I also know it only takes a small fracture to form to collapse one side. That one collapse could block your exit out of there. At minimum, I would at least have some lumber on hand in case you need to use the shelter you can at least shore up your exit. Awesome vid brother!

Nice Job! I dug mine out with water and a second trash pump to suck the slurry out and carried I dunno how many 80 pound sacks of concrete to reinforce the walls and shot down 4 inch pvc to support the walls like you did with the telephone poles, then dropped in a legth of rebar and filled them with concrete. Mines under the house and I am building it for Tornadoes since I live in Florida.
Evan have an artesian well I shot down.

Brother, that is alot of work. I have a bunker that I used a old 20ft shipping container and my buddies backo. What you did 15 plus years ago is very impressive. Great video as usual. I wish you lived in florida or I in georgia because we would have alot of fun.

@ConvictedTerrorism Iam just going to build a much bigger and nicer one and use it to store 3 families long term food. Lower the temperture the longer it will last. But the way our economy is going we all might need to be eating out of our storage before long. It will be concrete and block and painted inside just like a basement.

got a question. how do you deal with water in the shelter, mainly flooding? that would be an issue for a shelter or in thecase of my dad, for potatoe storage when i was growing up. wondered that when he was alive but never asked him about it.

@jasonmushersee I have no water problem at all never had water in it. Now I had a few drips a few times when we had snow but nothing to really add up. Just a few drips. The design of the earth over top I guess is the answer.

Very nicely done, however I must add something for you to consider. I've watched a lot of these videos and I think the most commonly overlooked issue you will face with a bunker of this size will be the "cabin fever" effect. You need to incorporate a plan for time outside of your bunker due to the small size. If you think about your needs as an individual, you will realize that any more than one person in a space of this size will be very cramped. Otherwise great Vid! I really like the floor!

Yeah that's very true. A venomous snake bite would just about be a death sentence in a WROL situation. I appreciate all your videos your a good honest moral guy and your doing the prepping community a great service by sharing your years of knowledge. Good luck and stay safe brother.

@BTeamHooligan No problem at all with flooding. You have to put the earth over and make sure the water runs down off of it before it sinks in. The design is what helps you more than anything else.

Little advice. Some room with a trough like ditch for urine and deep hole for taking a dump. Cover with m-balls to kill odor. Also some device that can catch rain water from above and tapped into and run below. Always have a sec. exit/entrance, you never know what you may encounter. All In all great job.

@oldschoolbronco78 no because its on the high part of the ground so everything moves away from it plus some heavy duty tarps are down and then covered with dirt and its been here forever so soil is established.

I suggest you make sure all your lanterns you plan to use down there are battery operated. With car batteries make sure they are sealed or they could let off Hydrogen gas which is explosive. Nice job. I would make improvements to your underground home, put in some concrete walls and floor and give it a nice bright color paint.
