My first American skateboarding was Kevin mad scientist...I ordered it out of the back of thrasher...took 2months to get it....rode it till it was a nub. HELLO FROM IRAQ
Absolutely LOVE Kevin stabb! So glad you had him on. He's been my inspiration since 1982. And I'm still skating everyday! At 50 thanks Tony, Jason, and Kevin for a great show!💯
Yaas another great podcast guys. As a 48 year old that mainly skates street I have to wear pads just to ensure I can move the day after a skate. Never get any hassle or comments from the young team either, just all together trying to do what we can do in rainy old Scotland :)
My Bro I feel you as a 37 year old done here in McAllen Texas I'm feeling like a 50 year old from all the beating of street skating I fully get you Bro! Sk84Life!🤠
"skate smarter, not harder" finally a podcast for the old people that are finally considering quitting skateboarding after decades of putting in work. this is the intervention we all needed!! also, i thought was about to quit at 28, 32, 36, 42 and now 46 years old. just haven't followed through, yet!! ✍️💪🎉
Speaking of McGill's 540s in 1984, I was in Lincoln, Nebraska and the pros were scheduled to come to Lincoln for Midwest Melee 2. We had heard that McGill was doing a flip trick in Sweden and that he was going to unveil the trick at the contest. The hype was definitely there. Then he did the McTwist and my mind was blown. Watching McGill doing the McTwist in September of 1984 was a game-changer.
Was that at the vert ramp that was by UNL? They call the place the Malone center. Did a fencing contest there in like 92 and remember seeing the ramp being taken apart.
This episode absolutely sums up my sophmore year in high school. I was going to this horrible private school because I had been kicked out of my high school. I did not fit in at all at this school as I was the only skater. I was an enormous Staab fan straight down to the hair cut. This was 1985 and Greg Smith was picking me up at my school to take me to the Del Mar contest (I am so jealous that you have the Greg Smith board on the wall. I of course had one as Greg taught me how to freestyle) I will never forget the look on kids and teachers faces when Greg showed up to pick me up with his crimped hair and I think it was pink that week. LOL!!! These people didn't know what was going on. That Del Mar contest was epic!!!! I think I stayed at Rex Kays house the first night of the contest. I also remember seeing GnR open for The Cult at Long Beach arena. I of course was way in to The Cult because of Staab. Thank you for the walk down memory lane. Badlands!
Thanks again for doing this podcast. All of this is straight up skating history. The guests you get and the dynamic of Tony and Jason are amazing. You deserve a lot more views and subscribers. Keep guesting on podcasts and promoting this show, because it's worth being seen!
Good times but I'd love more history of Staab. Not only did I love his skate style but for those of us that were not with the Hawk/Hosoi board selling cult, he was worth rooting for. I think you'll need to invite him back. I'd love to hear more about his story not just how it reflects on Tony's. Funny my first pro board was a CCC mail order bonite Hawk that snapped week 1... and so I went to the skate shop and there was a Sims Staab Scientist Mini calling my name. Learned to ollie on that board so I'll never forget it. Road a few Pirate decks into their graves until I moved on to "street" shapes. All my best skate memories are on a Kevin Staab deck!
Awesome having Kevin Staab on. I spent a lot of time watching Kevin, Cookiehead, John Schultes, Navarrette, and Mike Crum skate the Vision ramp at the Y. Good memories.
My favorite episode by far. Kevin and I are the same age and it’s so inspirationā that he still rips. My only complaint about this episode is that it’s way too short. I want more Kevin.
I remember going to McGill‘s skate shop in Newport Ritchie Florida and his mom Marylyn said, you got to see this. Mike McGill is doing the Mctwist. And I was like, what the hell is Mctwist? And she looked at me like I was stupid and supposed to know LOL she said, it’s a 540. lol it’s funny that she called her son Mike McGill as he was a brand to their family.
I feel like this poscast ended abruptly because Hawk and Staab telepathically told each other that it was time to go ride the ramp. Ellis was in fanboy mode the whole time. What an awesome episode!
Nice one Tony, Jason and Kevin. This podcast is more important than you realise - all of us old skaters know bit's and pieces from the past but you're gonna paint the whole picture if you keep getting the right guests. So interesting we are all glued to it from start to end 🛹🛹🛹 When's Lance coming on 😄
It's honestly awesome to hear skaters talk. Most have great stories, and are totally fine just letting loose and letting it all out. They'll tell you their life story with no shame. Love it.
"Fly Pirate" by M.I.A. is stuck in my head every time I see Staab. He's one of those guys that was just a magazine and board catalogue icon that I knew nothing about. Now I do, and that's one reason I love this podcast.
At 45 I just got a neck fusion last year and you guys truly inspire me to keep throwing down!! So please stop so at some point I know there is a end to throwing yourself in the air🤣Just kidding you guys are badass so keep living to your full potential and keep inspiring guys like me🤙👊
Found your podcast through your appearance on Theo Von (get him on!). You guys are naturals. You let the guest speak, don't interrupt and no exactly when to come in. The blend of seriousness and comedy is perfect too!
Once again a great interview. Once again half the time is spent talking about injuries. Please keep these interviews going as it reassures myself for being reluctant to try stuff and slam. I stayed safely in the box. LOL.
Awesome, staab was one of my favorite dudes back in the day, besides the skating, also because we both love Soundgarden. jejeje. And I also had the pirate board, the good ol days, damn it. cheers from Barcelona.
bro i miss jeff i am from dallas texas an he showed me so much at his park when i was young . i was in shock when passed the way he did. i hated when they changed name of his park to rapid revolutions. his wrist had that floating bone in it lol he bitched bout all time. he was great guy he took time out his day to show me a lil kid how do frontside airs an shit. great guy
One of the few podcasts I listen to! So good! Stabb makes me think of Sk8 TV, that's what got me skating in the early 90s! INTERVIEW SKATE MASTER TATE! 🤘🏻
Love Kevin Staab! Being a skater in the 80s/90s and having a board with my last name on it was epic! And I grew up and currently live in Phoenix... I wonder why Kevin doesn't talk about thrasher land in the west valley??? That place was awesome ...
i remember my older cousin had a sims staab mad scientist board. i got the wheels from it eventually, santa cruz ojII, and i still have/ride them on a cruiser setup. wish i had the board.
Fucking love this episode! Been a huge Kevin Stabb fan since I was 14. I have the original pirate and genie boards on my wall! My prized possessions! Great episode!
Dude! That MUST'VE felt like a very merry Christmas. Can't go wrong with sk8 His. I got Grosso's pair awhile ago and shredded my left one. Now I'm excited for my Half Cabs to arrive since I've never owned a pair.
I meet Staab over at this guy Chris Livingstons apartment in Phoenix, Az during late 90's. Seemed like a cool person. And I knew of him for years, as a skater. I had a Sims Staab board in late 80's.
My first skateboard was a rip off of a STAAB Board and then when I got my first proper board is was the Sims Pirate STAAB Board... Always a fan. Got to skate vert with him in AUS years ago too!
I had the sims staab pirate board probably in late 89. I didn't know too much about staab back then, being in England and pre Internet. I was lucky to have a local surf skate shop that had vids but limited. I always chose boards on shape, and what I thought would be best for ripping the streets lol
I saw Tony and Kevin do an amazing vert performance at Six Flags St. Louis in 2007, good memories. There were 2 other skaters and one BMX guy, but I can't remember their names. There was also 2 MotoX dudes doing laps around the half pipe and hitting a huge dirt ramp on the opposite side of the half pipe. I was front row and it was amazing. The host was some guy from MTV or something and he announced the show delay (1 hour due to rain) and said that he would be signing autographs at a booth they set up and nobody cared at all lol.
Great ep!! How is ellis gonna call the guys from The Cure a "a bunch of jag offs" though? For a guy that gets mad when ppl crap on him that was unexpected lmao

So this is where the casual legends come in their spare time to all hang out, eh? Glad I found this part of the internet. 😀
Staab “Mad Scientist” was my first pro model deck when I was about 12. Many many years ago. Loved that board.
Tony hawk. The reason I've picked up a board @ age 35. The most respect/adoration.
Mr. Jason Fxn Ellis. You a real one.
We really need some Staab reissues, it's been a long wait
Staab makes Jason scared , I'm impressed.

The eurocana ramp from that camp nowdays resides in Örebro, Sweden.. so it is still alive!
