I use ribbon for hinges when metal won’t do. Works very well.

I never thought of ribbon. Do you use one thicker piece vertically, or multiple pieces horizontally?

😹😹😹I still have the same fridge still working even after all of these years, it’s the outside fridge for keeping drinks cold.
For the shelving you could use jewellery wire and using superglue to stick them together as another option for making the shelves for the fridge.the only difference it on the shelves at the front they have a wrapped around bracing in white to cover the welded metal frame at the front.

Angela, I feel like maybe we are kindred spirits! LOL. Great tip on the jewelry wire. I didn’t have the right glue on hand for metal at the time but I picked up some E6000 today to do the bed frame.

You could probably mix Mod Podge with white paint and do the sealing and painting in one step. Like the Black Magic Craft channel who does something similar with black paint as a base layer for everything. Sealing it is good because some things react badly with other things. After it's sealed, you might even be able to use spray paint on it.

The fabric hinge is a great idea.
My parents married in 1954 and had a similar refrigerator.
Only the freezer was on top also but centered in the middle as it was smaller. It didn't hold much! They never had to buy a replacement refrigerator either. Things were made to last.

Isn’t that the truth! When my husband and I got married in the late 80’s we inherited my in laws old washer/dryer. We had it for 15 years, and my in-laws for 20+ years before that!

I have seen people use duct tape for hinges, comes in many colors, is sturdy, can be painted. For door hinges, etc. I bet they have white. Cute fridge. My parents gave me their old fridge, but it had a separate door for the top freezer compartment. My ex stole it. We kept it in the garage and only plugged it in if we needed extra space before a party or something. One time I made a big green salad and asked him to put it out there. But that fool put it in the freezer and ruined it. I think if I were going to make a fridge from scratch, I would go from the outside in. First make sure it would hold the largest item I might put in there, like a turkey on a platter, or a cake. Measure from there. I would also want to put light in it, for the freezer and the fridge. Those shelves would probably be sturdier if you put clear plastic "glass" on top of the grating. Not as period accurate however.

Now that was so clever. A very handsome fridge. Was the white paint acrylic paint? The pen handle for the fridge is such a good idea. Thank you for the tutorial, am very keen to try it.
