  • As some of you may know, I’ve been a UI/UX Designer for the last 12+ years. At the beginning of my career, Web Design and Product Design where not so differentiated. But as time goes by, there’s a bigger gap between the two, and the demand for specialized designers is growing fast. In this video I’ll talk about the similarities and differences between Web Design and Product Design, including things like the type of projects, the salaries and income, the type of work, the style of the work, the size of typical projects, and the skills needed. Everything you need to know to decide which one you prefer.

    This is honestly one of the best videos I have ever watched regarding these differences. Thank you for explaining these differences with such clarity. I am currently exploring both of these pathways as I work as a junior product designer but have an interest in web design to keep myself growing in design fundamentals and creative storytelling. Keep up the quality content!

    Dude, that's probably the best content I've listen so far.
    All the things you said, are so true.
    I've been in the product design field for almost four years now, and I can confirm all of your words.
    I recently had the opportunity to switch in a more b2c context for web design, and as you said the skillset is a bit different and I'm enjoying learning these skills from you. Keep this up :)

    Hi Bont, thank you for your insights about UI/UX design. Actually I like doing both visual design and product design (eventhough I have based in law and just change my career to UI/UX last year). The reason is I'm fastinated in nice website and logical thinking so it's make me kind of urge right now because I have to learn alot of things about UI and UX😂.
    I dont know how it's gonna change in the future but right now I'm happy because I can do both❤

    Wow, what a fascinating video! As someone interested in design, I've always wondered about the differences between web design and product design. This video provided such valuable insights and comparisons. It's clear that both disciplines have their unique challenges and require specific skill sets.
    Web design seems to focus more on creating visually appealing and user-friendly websites, ensuring smooth navigation and seamless user experiences. On the other hand, product design encompasses a broader scope, involving the design of physical products or digital interfaces, considering functionality, usability, and aesthetics.
    It's inspiring to see how UI/UX plays a vital role in both web and product design, as it enhances the overall user experience and helps achieve business goals. Ultimately, the choice between web design and product design depends on personal interests, strengths, and career goals.
    I appreciate the video for shedding light on these two design fields and providing guidance on how to choose the right path. It's crucial to keep learning, exploring, and honing our skills in this ever-evolving industry. Thanks for sharing such valuable information!

    Thank you for making the comment about UX! I think it's ridiculous that there's this push to separate UX down to an ultra fine point. If you're designing or even developing anything intended for human usage, UX should be considered a cardinal-virtue baked into the design and development process from the get-go.
    Many years ago when I studied industrial design, we were always instructed "remember to think of the user". Maybe I'm just old school, but I think that if you're a professional designer of any discipline, you should also be good-to-excellent at UX. UX is the watchful agent that should be guiding the process every step of the way, regardless of the design discipline. Great video as usual Adrian!

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      100%! I even think that the visual side is UX because crappy visuals generate all sorts of UX problems in digesting the content for the user and guiding their eye through our design so they don't have to think so much.

  • @maxbardus3019
    @maxbardus3019 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great thoughts! I am currently at a dilemma with this choice. I have 4 years of experience mostly in product and a bit in web. I really enjoy doing the visual design side of the web but can't make a switch because I don't want to lose opportunity to work on large scale products that solve problems. All the AI talk nowadays doesn't make it easier to decide 😅

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You'll always be a bit torn between the options before making a choice, that's normal. The question is: if you were a millionaire, what would you choose? If the answer is both, but you still see the benefits of choosing one, then just pick one. The more you learn about one career, the more you grow your passion for it, so just make the decision and don't look back.

    I'm a product designer by day and web/brand designer by night. It is quite overwhelming to do both to be honest. I don't know if it is the right thing to. product design roles tend to be really long and provide stability interms of income. The work is challenging as well. I may fall flat on my face someday. I may thrive to get better at both along the way. I hope it is the later.

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you will find more work as a Web Designer nowadays, definitely. But it's not an EASY career/path. There's also more designers doing it. Nothing of great value is easy to achieve.

  • @paramshah98

    I am at a dilemma where i know i prefer web design over product because web is sort of a middle ground between branding and product design, however whats holding me back is that i am not sure if i am that good of a visual designer to keep coming up with new visual styles and cool layouts ... meanwhile for these reasons product designs feels safer and the problems you face as a product designer are more tangible and data based and you dont get bogged down by subjective feedback.
    Would love to know what you think about this.

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your dilemmas are very valid and real. Here's what I would say: nothing worth pursuing is "easy", so don't wish it was easier, wish you were better :) And pursue what you really love. Web Design definetely has gotten me more hooked than product. Same as you I get really bored with product and I want to be working on different projects and journeys.
    Thing is for Web Design, as a UI/UX Design graduate can I transition easily to Web and if so... what will I need to specialize most into. Graphic Design can be one for sure but will I need some programming to achieve results and clients?

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment man! Yeah, you can transition to Web for sure because many of the interaction skills translate. Nothing worth pursuing is "easy", so don't wish it was easier, wish you were better :) I listed the important skills inside the Web Design Booster, but no, you don't need to learn development/programming. In fact, that's another career that would take you 5yrs to become a pro at. Hope this clarifies a bit, but these are great questions and probably worth doing a whole video about!

  • @zoistoik
    @zoistoik ปีที่แล้ว +3

    web = fun, product = boring! Jokes aside, being a product designer, I think the process is a bit different and less creative in product design. Most things designed have such strong guardrails and engineering constraints, that designs often need to follow known patterns so they're easy to replicate.

    • @hellobont
      @hellobont  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly, that's how I feel! A Product Designer will say that it's still creative but in a different way, but we cannot deny it's less expressive and experimental than Web.

    • @zoistoik
      @zoistoik ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@hellobont I think the creativity is actually in identifying the problems in product design. The execution is oftentimes just picking a pattern to apply, but the true work is uncovering opportunities that weren't obvious! Anyway, another great video ma.
