I've owned horses for over 40 years. This is no way to train them. Build mutual trust and respect, do the best by your horse and they'll do their best for you in return. It's a partnership not a bully v victim relationship. She's a disgrace.
I agree and I'm so afraid that they are all going to focus on Charlotte and she will take the rap for all the abusive horse trainers and for the organisations who turn a blind eye, and so it will continue.
@@annamariayannetta242look up Cesar Parra. This behaviour is common in dressage, and what she did is incredibly “mild” compared to others at the top of their game. It’s not surprising although it’s incredibly sad; it’s not normal for horses to prance in that way in that posture.
200 years ago, naturalist Thomas Bewick wrote the following tribute: "The Horse, in his domestic state, is generous, docile, spirited, and yet obedient...Although the Horse is endowed with vast strength and powers, he seldom exerts either to the prejudice of his master; on the contrary, he shares with him in his labours, and seems to participate in his pleasures...It must be a matter of regret to every feeling mind, that these excellent qualities should be often shamefully abused...thrown away in the ungrateful task of accomplishing the purposes of unfeeling folly." It was true then, and it's true now.
@@tessmonro7102 Thanks for the tip, may well take a look. Not accidental that horses are used in various kinds of therapy for people with behavioural problems: they're very sensitive to nuances in our behaviour - at least, so I read, but I'm an outsider here...
There are many people who practice natural horsemanship which is the exact opposite of what this video has exposed - Buck Brannaman who's character is the inspiration for the film " The Horse Whisperer" is a brilliant example of how we work with horses showing them kindness and respect. There is a fantastic film based on him called " Buck" which is well worth watching. There is a brilliant natural horse trainer here in Pembrokeshire who also follows Buck's methods - he always says pain should never be used to train horses. Always gain trust, use kindness and respect. Be a true leader for a horse and you will have a happy horse
The female who took the video, took the video 2.5yrs ago, also spoke of seeing other abuse and if you watch the video with sound you can clearly hear her laughing at the horses reaction to being whipped.. There is something off with the female who took the video, no doubts what CD has done is abuse and she should be banned from competing for life and from keeping horses/animals. There are many good trainers and competitors who don't abuse horses, don't make the mistake of tarring all with the same brush.
@@stevebandit1964 LOL dude it's ok if it's not your thing. There is good and bad in everything, take those who make their pets fat/obese, that is a form of abuse and comes with many health problems as well as a reduced life not just pain and a reduced quality of life. you keep sitting pretty there ;)
@@jt5765 That is an awful term and in past times and for some still sadly that is what happens but there are many who train without abuse but I understand it's not a world you know or understand so your ignorant comment is forgiven, I'd suggest you educate yourself by learning from people like Steve Young Horsemanship or Barry Hook to add some balance to your thoughts. I find often that those who squeal abuse over so much have pets who are obese and think that feeding them treats is love... Abuse takes many forms. dude.
I am a dressage rider. OMG that poor horse trying to get away from her then stopping to look at her and figure out what was going on. It’s all I can see right now.
Magistrates tend to come from the same community as this woman which is probably why, when you look up the handful of recent cases of women abusing horses, they are found not guilty.
Sadly the comments to your comment don't reflect the truth. 1) The comparison with dogs is very fitting, as this is NOT how we treat our dogs. I have been at schooling horse shows for 4th level rider, and seen horrifying treatment of horses, totally out of line of educated methods of training animals (including humans, much the same). If anyone treated a dog in the same way, everyone would get very upset, somehow, because of their size? ideas that they seek dominance (incorrect)? we allow this. 2) With patience, but yes it takes patience, it takes time, horses can be trained with primarily positive reinforcement and develop a beautiful relationships and they'll offer behaviors and movements beyond what anyone could imagine - but of course setting firm boundaries - this does not require violence. Charlotte Dujardin I'm sure is not a terrible person, however, I think she has become the face for a whole industry that pushes their horses to do more and more - for the horse unnatural movements and also an unnatural life, and an abusive relationship. This has nothing to do with riding or training horses. It misses the whole point of the beauty and harmony that can be developed with patience and ignorance.
@@zentaurianriding4378 Yes I have to agree with you. I do have a dog, a very loyal Springer and with me being disabled, he does a lot more for me than just being my best friend. He is my ' fetch and pick things up dog ' never would I lay a finger on him, . As for horses I have to say I am very wary of them, although a lady who used to work for me was kicked in the face by her own horse, leaving her with permanent scars amongst other problems, never the less she loved horses until the day she passed away. I have always said, it is the owners of animals that need the training first, and they must have the patience of a saint while training the animal.
It has nothing to do with the sport. You don't ban cars, because a criminal idiot hits and kills a person with their car. This abuse has everything to do with ribbon-hungry riders willing to be cruel to win, AND with the governing body (in this case the FEI) ignoring it. This is starting to change. Hopefully, this awful incident will force the FEI to really enforce strict trainng and competing rules. I've done amatuer dressage for 20+ years and my horses loved it. Not all horses do. I had one horse that hated it (which is pretty easy to see pretty quickly), so he became my weekend trail horse - which made him quite happy.
The upper level of dressage is horrible for horse welfare. Dressage was once a partnership between horse and rider, but now it's horses being forced into submission by their riders. The rules and judges need to change.
I agree it was the gentle art of riding and required an understanding between horse and rider. I no longer watch high level dressage, or show jumping or eventing; they have all become excessive and cruel.
I’ve decided I’m light of this…I am going to incorporate a non-profit for a dressage society. The scoring will be changed so that there is not so much focus on gait (which acts as a gatekeeper against anyone who cannot buy a horse born with incredible gaits). The goal will be to create a dressage society for all horses because that is the goal of classical dressage-to help the horse in front of you develop to be the best horse he can be physically, emotionally, and mentally. Wish me luck. With no $, I am not sure how far I will get, but I want to try!! To at least do something rather than sit back and watch the sport turn into saddle seat,
Competitive equestrian sports of all kinds can quickly degenerate into ego/financial wankfests wherein all that matters is winning. In dressage, judges are ultimately to blame for rewarding cruelty, and further back than that, the EFI is to blame for not insisting on judges being properly educated and held accountable for their judging
I have 2 ponies who never see a whip, are never made to do anything other than just be horses. Unfortunately, the whipping attitude is endemic in the UK horse world! 😢
You shouldn’t ban whips. Any training tool can be abusive in the wrong hands! Whips are useful as an extension of your hand or leg. Especially if you are working with the horse with both of you on the ground, the whip is helpful to touch him wher you maybe cannot safely reach with your hand. It is also good to have a whip in case you need to immediately create space between you and the horse-again for safety. When I am riding my horse and I want more forward impulse from him I first give him a gentle squeeze/nudge from my calf. If he doesn’t respond I immediately cluck/kiss. If he goes not respond yo the cluck/kiss, then I immediately give him a quick tap with the whip. Yes, it stings a little. But doing that combination consistently and early in training means he now moves forward from the gentle nudge in my leg. He immediately gets lots of rewards for that. The whip is there to clarify and reinforce the communication and the goal is to use the very gentlest touch. I do not in anyway condone what cdj did here, and my heart breaks for the horse who appeared to look as if he felt betrayed, and was obviously confused and frightened. And despite all that he was still exceptionally well behaved. As I said-the whip should be used to clarify to the horse, and this was awful to watch. :’(
She was also using a lunge whip hit him, typically we use those for lunging the horse and to have a mark of distance to keep them from accidentally running over you, not to hit them.
Suspended for life, and incarceration for 3 years. No further access to ANY animal for life. I am horrified and angry. Arrogance and animal abuse, winning all those medals. She's out of control and must be stopped. She needs a career change. This is NEVER acceptable. I learned dressage from an old Army captain in the UK. I was 12 years old. We never used anything other than training by changing foot position when riding. No crop, no spurs, nothing, just moving my feet in front and behind the saddle to achieve specific movements. I have never seen/done anything like this when riding. I am sickened to the core.
I'm just wondering how it is that horses intrinsically know how to respond to a primate sitting on their back changing his/her foot position. Is this knowledge intrinsically handed down genetically through the horse generations since time immemorial?
@lonhro12 not sure if you are genuinely asking or being snarky. However incase this is a real question : No. They do not have some kind of genetic memory or instinct on how to react to a human on their back or leg positions. The TLDR would be to look into operant conditioning horse psychology and review multiple trainers to identify different teniques. Some are barbaric. Some are fair. As a jump off maybe look at Warwick Shiller and some trainers that do clicker training. Stay neutral. Shield up of powerful opinions and decide for yourself Training like this requires the human to have understanding of operant conditioning, shaping and capturing techniques plus good timing. The human also needs to understand the species and the individual they are working with for best results. That said there is also a lot of cross over between species - it would just be slower with more mistakes if you did not understand who you are training. You can also incorporate clicker training and treats. Yes folks that is also a operant conditioning tool. The horse has hardwired instincts of a prey animal and will naturally learn to move as other horses and communicate as other horses do. They can also learn to mimic others. By understanding this we can predict and thus "capture" behaviour we want then build a que into it. Eg move forward If the change we desire is not likely to occur immeatley we can build towards it by "shaping" reward the try, then continue to shift the bar for reward until we get what we want. Eg bow We can build in any que to this - hand motion, leg position, voice - anything we desire. It is possible to train without cruelty. It is possible to get flying changes or half passes ect without whip or spurs. Heck you can do it in a halter with no other tack and with rain boots bear feet or flip flops. Opinion/ my 2 cents: If this is the highest level then they should be able to do the moves at liberty. No tack. No crop. No spurs. No abusive practices.
@@Obsidianoak yes I was being snarky to patricialivingstone above. Her message should have included much of what you have said in your reply. By bald statements such as "We never used anything other than training by changing foot position when riding. No crop, no spurs, nothing, just moving my feet in front and behind the saddle to achieve specific movements. I have never seen/done anything like this when riding." she is giving naive learner riders the impression that by just moving your foot etc or changing your seat position the horse will do whatever you want. this is true BUT ONLY IN TRAINED HORSES. Of course operant conditioning is essential in training naive horses and course operant conditioning includes both positive and negative reinforcement. And of course negative reinforcement involves pressure of some kind and pressure release. And of course a trainer can (and should) combine both -ve and +ve reinforcement. And obviously Charlotte has no idea of how to apply either effectively and ethically. But don't let that be an indictment of ALL ppl who use whips. It's how you use them that's important.
@@lonhro12 you make a fair point: education is needed. There is a sort of notion that horses will do what you ask if you know the right hand/leg position and /or refine by using spurs and bits with leverage ect. As part of the Equestrian community we should voice the training aspect more and be aware of how we use tools and what we are doing/ being taught.
Peter Egan confused "big lick" training in parts of the USA with dressage when he mentioned weights. As for cruelty amongst "top level" equestrians it's appalling, I have owned and ridden horses for years. I can't wrap my head around anyone being able to mistreat these amazing, sensitive creatures. It infuriates me and if that's what it takes to get to the top then I'll gladly stay at grassroots level with my happy horses, who never have and never will feel a whip on them..
Banning the offending person, yes. Banning the sport of dressage, good grief, no. That is a knee-jerk, uninformed reaction. If a driver hits and kills a pedestrian with their car, yes, the driver should get prison time for man slaughter. Are all cars banned because of one criminal idiot? Of course not, because most drivers are responsible. Same thing with dressage. I've done amatuer dressage for 20+ years in the U.S. I've never seen or heard of anyone doing anything like this. All of the dressage movements are natural movements that you'll see occasionally in a pasture when a horse is being a horse. Dressage takes those natural movements and refines them into something a horse and rider can do together.
One thing I've found that most horses DO seem to enjoy is herding cattle or sheep. They just seem to take to it without much instruction at all. I think it might be because they like pushing some other animal around.
Sorry but this bloke knows nothing about dressage - making their nostrils do something? Let's have a debate but some standards of information. This isn't balanced really.
For the first time in history of men’s relationships with horses we are using them for leisure and sports and not working them to death or sending them off into war. We are e joying this new relationship with horses, and I’d venture to say they are too!! I think there are systemic problems with competition at the highest levels, 100%. But banning competition altogether or riding altogether would be an incredible disservice to horses and to people. There is nothing so beautiful as the trust and partnership you experience with a horse. Horses also provide vital services to people with various disabilities. A horses walk feels very similar to a humans natural walk. By riding therapy horses, people who are paralyzed or whose mobility is limited, get to feel the sensation of walking. This is incredibly beneficial to their bodies. They all start farting when they are on the horse, because their bodies are able to move out gas they otherwise couldn’t. It’s also amazing for their confidence. It’s easy to say “outlaw it” to stop the abuse. But that’s 1. Unlikely, and 2. Would be such an incredible loss. I am grateful every day I get with my horse. And he is grateful for me too.
@@Whisperingwoodsfarms I'm not sure why so many people are so sure that they know what a horse is feeling or thinking. What evidence do you have to say that your horse is grateful? Do you know enough about the structure and function of a horse's brain that you can say with confidence what the horse is thinking and feeling?
Many aren't trained like that at all but I agree all horse "sport" at this level should be banned until each discipline sorts its respective house out. The horse organisations who have knowingly turned a blind eye to this and other forms of harsh training are a disgrace and need to be held to account.
Her horses always had 'blue tongue' & 'frothing white mouth' when competing due to mouth reigns being overly tight to control the horse via submission.
That is absolute rubbish. A horse that is comfortable with the bit will generate copious quantities of saliva that turns into froth when the horse chomps on the bit. It’s a dry mouth that you have to worry about.
Foam isn't generally a good thing, there are different types of it. If a horse is comfortable, you'll see a tiny little bit of foam, which looks like a transparent/lightly white lipstick. It should NOT be intransparent white or even drop from the mouth. This is called excessive foaming and is a sign for discomfort. @@ruthmoncrieff1284
This is far removed for natural horseman ship as it can possibly get. Good job on the person recording. This is clearly a lesson being given by Charlotte. I want to be clear there are horse riders and trainers that absolutely DO NOT do this. They work with the horses ability and take time an effort to ensure the welfare of the horse is paramount. Ive witnessed all kinds of cruelty at competitions junior and adult alike. Where petulant juniors beat the crap out of their tethered ponies and horses all because they didnt win or had a fence down. oive seen a semi professional showjumper (male) take his stallion into a horse box and kick and punch it for over 10 minutes in a closed horsbox. the horsebox was thudding and swinging from side to side. Imo there should be welfare officers patrolling all affiliated and unaffiliated events for endurance, showjumping, dressage and eventing. This means the BRCA, BSJA, BE and BD associations as well as the FEI MUST put welfare FIRST and internally appoint these officials who should patrol the car parks (especially watching those trailers and lorries parked well away from eyes), lunging pens, horse walkers and warm up arenas. If this was to happen we would see cruelty end at competitions at the very least. But friends and clients should also be vigilant like the person who took this video and report misconduct. I'm really glad that Dujardin has been swiftly disciplined but this is the tip of the iceberg simply because professional riders livelihoods rely on performance. Thye push horses to injury and death to win at all costs. Ive personally seen this. Horses stuffed with high perfor5mance feed so that they die of colic, pushed in the training ring until they get suspensory ligament injuries and fail.
Wow! I have ridden dressage for years been at stables for years. I’ve also been around a western stable and a relative’s trotting racers and step dad’s ranch horses. In my 40 years around trainers I only once saw an idiot at a jumping stable lose his temper with a school horse and hit with his hands, but have never seen the whip used like that on a horse. My trainer was a natural and competed and won with her team at the Pan Am Games in Mexico. The horse world I’ve been lucky to experience has been peopled with ordinary animal loving kids and adults.
How do you know they enjoy it? I've been training horses for 55 years and the furthest I can go is to say if the horse shows no signs that he's upset or resents what I'm asking well that's all I can aim for. But I'm not a horse so I don't know if he actually enjoys it, all I can say with certainty is that he doesn't resent it
Not all horse people are like that. Please don’t stereotype. We adore our horses and we are committed to making sure they are happy. Definitely not about control. Such incredible animals who deserve the utmost respect.
Firstly yes she is in the wrong. However I’ve been doing dressage for years now and not once have I heard or seen the term “shock color” and also “weights to make there feet move weirdly” no that is not what happens. This will be an unpopular opinion however in the heart of this and within the equestrian community we have all been saying. There is a human within all of this. A mum. A wife. A human. She has done something hurendous that should not be tolerated, however we need to tone it down. The amount of death threats she must be getting, haterid and spiteful words. Does this mean that the Olympics should ban all equestrian disciplines? Personally I think not! Why should we in our right minds, the people who get up the levels with using no abuse. It’s wrong. I don’t think one woman’s actions should create a bad reputation for the sport. It’s wrong. It’s over dramatic in the terms of how far people are going. This does not mean I am fore her whipping that horse. I am completely against it. However there’s a certain extent you can go to. The rest of the way is pushing boundaries. So please just think before you comment!
An error of judgement! Good grief, I used to ride dressage and our training was nothing like that no weight no whipping just no need for that kind of treatment and no rolkur
There are many people within the equestrian scene who fight against unethical training methods. People with actual knowledge about biomechanics and equine behaviour. Why not interview one of them instead of this "expert" who doesn't even seem to know the difference between dressage and big lick? We have enough of these clowns in the comment section.
Cruel woman.Should be prosecuted. Bullying a horse to perform an un -natural act.Whips of all kinds should be banned.Probably ,has history of this before.
Why did the person who was filming the lesson wait until now to say something about it ,if they were concerned about the treatment of the horse why didnt they speak out then and challenge Charlotte about her method of teaching .
This a ridículos comparation. Reproduction and rasing children is part of life. Now afortunately It is not allowed children work as It used o be. Children labour , traffic, is not part of Life. We can not ban the horses to be raised by their mums. This can be a comparation. Horse rasing versus babes rasing.
It is good that it has been revealed, but it is a bit harsh. As an aside, I wonder if Harry will get the same type of schtick re any questionable training in polo.
I have read he pushes horses so much he's had them drop down dead I once felt sorry for him what happened to his mum but after reading that I don't any more don't like him
The person was cruel, but the sport is not. I'm not an "expert" but I am a horse person with experience and it is possible to do these events without cruelty. Some horses love it as much as their riders do.
It's not even a sport. What athletic qualities do you need to sit on a horse for 20 minutes? All you have to do is ensure you don't fall off. Pathetic.

Is this the height of animal cruelty? Somebody using a 'carriage' whip to flick horses on the rump during a training session (these horses will be well stabled & looked after by vets - not left out in fields all year round). What about jockey's whipping horses during a race - ban all horse racing. What about riders 'kicking' their horses while riding as a means of 'encouragement' - ban all horse riding. What about forcing a horse to wearing a 'bit', enabling it's head to be jerked from side to side? What about Halal butchery - cutting the throats of cognizant animals to satisfy human requirements. How are we defining cruelty - it seems to be all over the place.
The problem is that every top trainer wants/needs to produce Grand Prix horses too fast. Any horse under 12 years old going Grand Prix probably had some training along the way that was harmful to them physically and/or emotionally. It takes at least six years to train a horse to Grand Prix dressage, and that’s assuming the horse takes to it and there are no major set backs along the way. But to get clout and make money they need to breeding, training, campaigning and eventually sell these horses. Profit margins get lower the longer you have to keep and care for the horse. Overall dressage is in a downward spiral. Judges are rewarding exaggerated movements more and more..:if you compare what dressage looked like ten years ago vs today you would be shocked. Anytime you breed for some exaggerated characteristics in an animal it is bad news. And with artificial insemmination as well as embryo transfer, the gene pool for these horses is getting smaller and smaller. In my honest opinion, I’d love to see a new organization develop to run dressage competitions. One that truly focuses on the horse and puts less importance on scoring the horse’s gait. The horse’s gait is something that largely is limited by his innate build or conformation. A lot of horse and rider teams who train very hard and do a beautiful job will never place above some of these horses who were bred for just this purpose. This closed the door of our sport for a lot of people and also puts a fairly unattainable price tag on it. What CDJ did in this video is reprehensible. But she has done good things for horses too-normalizing giving horses lots of time for turnout, normalizing wearing helmets in dressage instead of a top hat,,and normalizing “hack” days for the horses. These things may seem like nothing, but they are very important and she had a lot of influence on equestrians everywhere in encouraging people to give their horses turnout having relaxing leisure rides in addition to their rigorous training schedules.
She has form , was disqualified for blood marks on horses side caused by over use of spurs, then again when the noseband was too tight and caused the horses teeth to scrape against its gums which led to blood dripping from its mouth, and now this. I sincerely hope she is not allowed to come back into dressage.
Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Dressage is a very difficult discipline to master, for both the horse and rider. It is an honorable discipline that requires years of training for both, and should remain as an Olympic event. The proper measure here is to discipline the offending human, which is being done.
Unfortunately most all those people do it. Unnatural stepping and dressage is the issue, and high stepping. This is the truth. All of them are trained by cruelty. Ban it. All dressage is BS. She is no different than any of them.
All this is insane, all the comments from people who have no idea about horses, calling for banning dressage because of one woman, if thats the case, owning cats and dogs shouldn't be legal anymore. What are the consequences of banning dressage, ever think of that? A hell of a lot less horses, one day there will be no more left because of you, no she shouldn't have been so horrible, but don't play hero and screw over our culture and horses while you do it, yes there is a small element of cruelty to race horses, dressage etc, but these animals live much better and longer, healthier lives than the ever would in the wild, why get rid of so many beautiful animals for the sake of your egos?
It is far from fair to say dressage should be banned, yes what was in the video was wrong but to assume that every horse that competes is treated that way is totally unfair on the riders that achieve everything through hard work and the partnership with the horse, that bond and partnership with the horse is so important and without that you have nothing. It is unfair to assume or suggest that all riders are doing this to their horses, whether eventing, show-jumping and dressage, don't tar everyone with the same brush
What she did is not horse training, it's horse coercion. On that basis, harmony is impossible. Those who have been trained to produce athleticism would know never to engage in such appalling mistreatment. Modern dressage has become hideously distorted from what it originally was and the judges reward them for it to the extent that ethical horsemanship doesn't make the grade. Time for change or quite rightly remove this circus act from the Olympics which has high standards of sportsmanship and this has no place there.
Makes you wonder ..of all the horses she's trained how many others were abused and just not recorded 🤷 couldn't have been her first time. And why did someone wait so long to release the video. That's an animal that is being abused !! Report immediately !

Horseperson here. Dressage is not just tricks, it's the ancient art of teaching a horse how to carry a rider in a healthy way. Which, if done right, is actually fun for both parties, and horses learn how to carry themselves proudly. Charlotte Dujardin, Helgstrand, Cesar Parra, and a lot of the top "dressage" riders are not doing actual, classical dressage. The modern "dressage" is an abomination, and the "training methods" range from at the very least damaging to the horse to straight-up abuse. Each and everyone has dirt in their closet, no exceptions. Keep in mind that only the trainers and riders actually abuse horses, but the FEI, the judges, the whole system enables that. Charlotte Dujardin is just another "black sheep" for them.
@@Steven-ze2zk What she (and many others) did was shameful and inexcusable. However this does not mean that all horse owners are like them nor does it mean that horses don't have fun and enjoy their interactions with their owners. Horses who are treated well do develop a close bond with their owners.
I remember being 6 years old and giving my school pony a short smack on the shoulder for hesitating at the jump - my coach just about yanked me out of the saddle, scolding me in front of the entire group. Dressage, in it's original form, is not tricks, it is more of a yoga-pilates-dance education of the body and mind for horses, that makes them strong and balanced and confident. When you start out, you literally just ride circles at varying speeds and sizes, to make the horse equally supple on both sides. A good rider becomes so attuned to his horse that their aids are "invisible". Once the horse is many years into this education, it can perform difficult maneuvers like the piaffe or passage (the floppy thing with the legs), seemingly without the rider doing much, just using his own seat and balance and light touch of the leg to achieve it. Yes, you can whip an animals legs or hang weights off them to make them move a body part. That's not dressage, that's a perversion. Unfortunately most of these arguments are moot since competetive and wealthy dressage circles have taken it upon themselves to prove every single prejudice right. At this point, original true to spirit dressage and the competition have as much in common as a giraffe and Jupiter's rings.

Okay banning the whole discipline from The Olympics is a bit much. About 30% of dressage is abuse. We’ve just been exposing a lot of evil riders lately. But when done correctly, dressage is actually a wonderful discipline in the sport of equestrianism. It’s the horrible judges and abusive riders as well as trainers that are the problem. Not the discipline.
No, the discipline has evolved into an competition, where abusive riders win, showing openly this goes against the horses‘s health. Talk about Rollkur/ Hyperflexion and I don‘t know the way to remove all the judges and riders who have excepted this as ‚normalcy‘. As an equine vet I once did vaccine controls on a local riding competition, talked to a father of a teenage rider on a pony which was clearly lame and got a chuckle back and said he knew. 😤 I then went up to the dressage judges, as the VET, telling them this pony was lame, they should take the rider out. What do you think they said? No, we don‘t do that, we‘ll just give them lower points! 😭🤬 Which doesn‘t help the pony at all. Later, when I complained to my boss in the practice, he told me the father was someone high up in the pony club! This swamp needs drained!
30% is a shockingly high rate of abuse. Take the money out of all horse disciplines and the abusers go somewhere else, those who stay are in it for the right reasons. So I'm for a ban on high level monetised competitive horse sports.
@@tillyt4054 Dressage horses that are treated kindly and aren’t abused actually really love doing dressage. All horses love to learn and please their owners. I'm an equestrian. I love and train my own horses. But I've seen professional trainers do horrific things in the name of training. Reining horses, Mexican dancing horses, gaited horses, Walkers, park horses are all treated abusively in the name of training.
Show Jumping and Eventing also have their own horror stories including Ian Miller (Captain Canada) and Oliver Townend. I was priviledged to see Reiner Klimke on Ahlerich win the gold in dressage at the 1984 Olympics in L.A. Klimke came back several times to L.A. to put on expositions of how he trained his horses - from training level to Grand Prix Special. NEVER did I see any cruelty! He worked at understanding each horse and helped them to understand him. They were happy horses.. With the proper relationship with a horse, the horse will want to please you. That has been my experience with dressage and with the people who rode with me. Don't condemn this beautiful art form because of one horrid person.
Animals don't belong in sports, in the circus, in the zoo, etc. And this lady should be sentenced to prison for animal cruelty. In addition, she must be stripped of all victories and medals. Nobody believes she only did that once.

The use of any animal for such things should be banned from everything, not just the olympics. Same with circus animals, totally unatural and cruel.
Do you have a dog? Do you wear leather or eat meat?
Youve obviously never owned or ridden horses.
Close the sport. Soon new scandal.
Horses can't complain. Protect them.
Agree with this! Dressage was a partnership and was the horses ability .
You are both wrong and clueless
I have 2 ponies who never see a whip, are never made to do anything other than just be horses. Unfortunately, the whipping attitude is endemic in the UK horse world! 😢
BAN WHIPS.
However incase this is a real question :
No.
Shield up of powerful opinions and decide for yourself
Training like this requires the human to have understanding of operant conditioning, shaping and capturing techniques plus good timing.
Eg move forward
If the change we desire is not likely to occur immeatley we can build towards it by "shaping" reward the try, then continue to shift the bar for reward until we get what we want. Eg bow
We can build in any que to this - hand motion, leg position, voice - anything we desire.
It is possible to train without cruelty. It is possible to get flying changes or half passes ect without whip or spurs. Heck you can do it in a halter with no other tack and with rain boots bear feet or flip flops.
Opinion/ my 2 cents:
If this is the highest level then they should be able to do the moves at liberty. No tack. No crop.
Cruelty ist in all professional equestrial sport. Not only in dressage.
That is why It should be banned, Sports with animals.
Unforgivable by Charlotte Dujardin. Lifetime ban from animals.
Dressage + Show Jumping + racing should be banned. Barbaric.

One thing I've found that most horses DO seem to enjoy is herding cattle or sheep. They just seem to take to it without much instruction at all. I think it might be because they like pushing some other animal around.
If you had even a tiny bit of knowledge and you watched a top horse go cross country you would see that they love it.

How the heck did you think these animals were trained? These types of sports (including horse racing) are a discrace.
Many aren't trained like that at all but I agree all horse "sport" at this level should be banned until each discipline sorts its respective house out. The horse organisations who have knowingly turned a blind eye to this and other forms of harsh training are a disgrace and need to be held to account.

I want to be clear there are horse riders and trainers that absolutely DO NOT do this. They work with the horses ability and take time an effort to ensure the welfare of the horse is paramount.
Ive witnessed all kinds of cruelty at competitions junior and adult alike. Where petulant juniors beat the crap out of their tethered ponies and horses all because they didnt win or had a fence down. oive seen a semi professional showjumper
(male) take his stallion into a horse box and kick and punch it for over 10 minutes in a closed horsbox. the horsebox was thudding and swinging from side to side.

Bit of an odd one this too release a video that is old just before the Olympics. I wonder what the persons motives are for doing so now.
Yes I wondered that. Why didn't she release it immediately? If she had she might have prevented other horses from receiving the same cruel treatment.
Who cares? The thing is, Dujardin did it!
Yes ban all sports as horses are unable to defend themselves from cruel women riders
Women riders? How incredibly sexist of you. Have you ever watched a rodeo?
Disgusting!!!
She has form , was disqualified for blood marks on horses side caused by over use of spurs, then again when the noseband was too tight and caused the horses teeth to scrape against its gums which led to blood dripping from its mouth, and now this. I sincerely hope she is not allowed to come back into dressage.
Why did they let her carry on after that a lot of people in this same as her
@@pearldoyle4153 They changed some welfare riding issues, with the spurs length and tightness of the noseband.
Horses should not be used for entertainment! They do not want to do these events 😮
Exactly. The dont chose It voluntarely.
Some horses actually love it.
@@joys.6347 the horses love to dance at the request of the humans. Came on!
Don't throw the baby out with the bath water. Dressage is a very difficult discipline to master, for both the horse and rider. It is an honorable discipline that requires years of training for both, and should remain as an Olympic event. The proper measure here is to discipline the offending human, which is being done.
The problem is there are too many of them. CD isn't the only one and the equestrian organisations have knowingly ignored this for years.
Unfortunately most all those people do it. Unnatural stepping and dressage is the issue, and high stepping. This is the truth. All of them are trained by cruelty. Ban it. All dressage is BS. She is no different than any of them.
I don't believe dressage should be banned from the Olympics. Only abusive riders should be banned from showing at any level and any equine sport.
Dressage is not about terrible forced positions you need to look the meaning of dressage it is not tricks 😡
Old mate, Peter has no idea what he is talking about.
Thankyou for highlighting dispicable animal abuse
Makes you wonder ..of all the horses she's trained how many others were abused and just not recorded 🤷 couldn't have been her first time. And why did someone wait so long to release the video. That's an animal that is being abused !! Report immediately !
Such hypocrites, crying over the horse getting whipped but no word for the animals they eat daily who are treated 1000x worse.
Who is 'they'? I eat meat and eat only grass fed meat and pastured chickens. These animals objectively have the best lives of any animals on earth, with the possible exception of domestic pets such as dogs. Ever thought of not generalising?
@@Dogfacedbloke Myth! You still kill/betray them, when they don't want to die for your gastric pleasure of a 15 minute meal. Eat veggies, fruits, grains instead🌱
24 errors of judgement.
In 1 single minute of filming. Can you imagine how many per sesión? Thousands
Thank you for addressing this as a genuine and legitimate issue.
Proud horses? Proud horses who have fun? Are you sure you've not been spending too much time with horses and have consequently gone insane?
So true
@@Steven-ze2zk What she (and many others) did was shameful and inexcusable. However this does not mean that all horse owners are like them nor does it mean that horses don't have fun and enjoy their interactions with their owners. Horses who are treated well do develop a close bond with their owners.
@@tessmonro7102 I believe you.
You think horses are trained by talking to them over a glass of red wine
Her horses are immaculate and well kept
She’s not a animal abuser
She's definitely an animal abuser.
Ban Kings Guards as well, it is pathetic what they do to horses
That's royalalty for you, no empathy.
What do they do to them?

Absolutely
Okay banning the whole discipline from The Olympics is a bit much. About 30% of dressage is abuse. We’ve just been exposing a lot of evil riders lately. But when done correctly, dressage is actually a wonderful discipline in the sport of equestrianism. It’s the horrible judges and abusive riders as well as trainers that are the problem. Not the discipline.
Wonderful for who ? Certainly not the horses
I then went up to the dressage judges, as the VET, telling them this pony was lame, they should take the rider out.
What do you think they said? No, we don‘t do that, we‘ll just give them lower points! 😭🤬
Which doesn‘t help the pony at all.
The only time an animal doesn’t enjoy something is when they are A sick of it, or B being abused. So it’s important they get breaks and are being treated well.
@@lynnm6413 Yeah because the FEI sucks ass and needs to be abolished.
It is a shame that their respective national federations do not have the gonads to ban them for more than a few months, since their livelihood depends upon their ability to train and compete at the highest levels of their respective sports.
She is VILE. Suspension, is not enough. A lifetime ban, from competition and horse ownership, plus criminal charges
This diabolical woman was included in U.K. Olympics team. Rewarded for cruelty to Horses. Yet, our Zara Phillips misses out 🤷♀️🤦♀️🐨🐨🦘
Also let's call out liar Carl Hester saying he never saw any evidence of abuse from her- in 17 years...that sounds a bit of a cover up!!
CD looks quite at home carrying out the relentless whipping - so do not think this is a “one off error of judgement “ as she claims! She is doing it openly and in front of witnesses - not trying to hide away in some dark corner. Now we hear there are other complaints about her.
She should be put out of the team permanently and charges should be brought against her
There should be a full investigation into ALL THE TEAMS! And agree it should be banned altogether!! K
I haven’t been ridin very long, about one year, but this didn’t a fucking error of judgement, this is straight up fucking horse abuse!
The fact she’s trying to blame it on an error is WILD to me.
