A Car Dealership ABANDONED This Jaguar 16 Years Ago... I BOUGHT IT

  • When I heard about a cheap, low mile, Jaguar XJ8 that had been sitting since 2006... I was excited. Even better I could have it dropped off at the house for $1,000 all in. A 4 liter V8, great interior, almost all the modern creature comforts, this is my kinda car. After working on it for an entire day, I understand why the dealer threw in the towel this car is not fun to work on. Hopefully it will all be worth it once I get it running!

Great video, the XJ8 was in a similar state to how I picked up my E46. Mine was left for around 18 months. Also needed a fuel pump like the XJ8. In addition, it needed a new, mass airflow meter, battery and coils. The red 2003 Outlander XLS (the car in our CU buyer’s guide video and other channel videos) was also abandoned by its previous owner for well over a year as well and it became a very solid car after the exhaust and suspension issues got sorted. Looking for yet more abandoned cars to save, there’s something about bringing these cars back to life.

Bad techs, my wife bought a Jag and they couldn't diagnose a bad turbo and chain slap, which I told them was wrong with it. They told me I was wrong and the engine had to be replaced. It took a week of my time (every evening after work) to replace the turbo, chain, chain tensioners and guides. Car still runs without issues to this day.

  • @TorxGarage
    @TorxGarage 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Oh yeah a couple things that might help, but I'm sure you're probably further along now. The harness to the pump inside the tank likes to disintegrate. Also, sounds like compression off, I see timing codes. These were good about jumping timing due to the upper chain tensioners and they do bend valves. BUT it could have also lost compression on a few cylinders due to being a nikasil engine or just over time... I have brought these engines back to life after the cylinders were washed down with the old oil in the cylinder trick just to build compression again. Worth checking a few things. Also, at least the intake pipe and breather hose are one of the few things still available new.
Good luck, fingers crossed. hope to see it running!

I have a 2003 XJ8. You mentioned Restricted Performance message, that is very typical with old gas and it clears after a few drive cycles. These cars also have an issue with low compression due to the Nikosil (spelling?) coating on the cylinder walls. With all the cranking you may have to squirt some oil in the cylinders to get it to fire after you get the fuel pump replaced. They have a bad habit of wiping the oil off the walls when they don’t start right away. Mine did it once. and all it took was oil in each cylinder.
These cars ride like a dream, and also handle very well for such large cars. I also have a 2017 F-type, so I’m really enjoying the channel

I actually think this is one of the iconic Jag looks. There is NO WAY you are going to think this is some other brand of car ( like a Toyota Tercel to BMW 3 Series comparison LOL!) when you pass it on the road or see it in a lot. I do believe you have found a gem here for that price shipped!

Have you thought about doing a standard inspection video for you and us?
I would love to expect the same what's going on video for every "new to you/us" vehicle you purchase. This way we think everything is going ok and BAM! Suspenseful issues, or, nothing happens. I think it would be a great thing to see standardized.

I'd still have my last one now were it not for the Mayor of London expanding his stupid Ultra Low Emission Zone to cover where I live next year, meaning I was forced to change it. Got an X350 now which is still a nice car, but doesn't feel as special as these do. Don't get me wrong, the X308 isn't a car without its faults out of the box, but they can all be fixed and, while you shouldn't have to do them, once you do, they are actually really robust and reliable cars.

The fuel pump is priming, but not running. What safety fuel cut-off features does the car have?
    1. Hmmm...Ford DNA, so somewhere there is an Inertia Switch which prevents the pump from running in case of an impact. Push reset button if it is popped. 2. Next , does the tach move while cranking or when it briefly starts? If no, then either crank or cam sensor is out - needs both to confirm engine is running and allow fuel pump to continue after priming.
    3. Hey, the AFM looks like it is attached to the airbox, and you have the snorkel removed. So the AFM isn't seeing any airflow, so it is not giving the ECM a signal to allow the fuel pump to continue running after priming. Reconnect intake snorkel and try again. Love the project, thanks for the content.

JR, an S-Type R does not have a FORD engine! Nor does an F-Type. Both have a Jaguar engine, that was designed by Jaguar and is today built by Jaguar. But when Ford owned Jaguar, the engine was built by the Ford Premier Group engine plant in the UK. The Ford Premier Group was Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin, Land Rover, and Lincoln. When Ford bought Jaguar in the early '90s, they were so impressed with the V8 Jaguar had under development, Ford decided to build it and use it across the Premier Group range, plus in the Thunderbird. After Ford sold Jaguar, Ford continued to build the engine and use it in Lincolns, and Ford built it for Jaguar under contract. Ford discontinued the engine in Lincolns a few years ago, and all the tooling and machinery was purchased by Jaguar, and today, the engine is built in house. To say the Jaguar V8, or V6 derivative, is a Ford is like saying an Audi has a VW engine. Some of the early Jaguar I4 and V6 engines were Fords but not the V8 or later V6, which is the V8 with the back 2 cylinders blanked off.

I had a 99 XJR for about a year that I got in a offerup trade for my E53 X5 3.0 with low compression. That had to be the worst car I’ve ever owned. Oil leaks, limp mode engaging randomly, loose wandering steering, the front cradle holding the engine would move around if you stopped hard then then come crashing back into position, the supercharger would suck the rubber tubing in on itself causing the car to die or run horribly, lots of bad bushings etc. I fixed it just enough and sold it to a young dude who spammed me constantly until I sold it to him. Careful spraying the throttle body I think that’s what caused my “restricted performance” limp mode. It did look amazing though. The kids would always comment ooh you got a Jag. I think Kodak Black had something to do with that. In my new old Jag but it’s so fast😅

John, have a question about my sons Volvo C30. Did a whole bunch of work on it, but has two broken bolts on exhaust manifold… screechy cold starts. Every shop around me tells me that the car is totaled as it needs an ‘engine-out’ to repair.
    Does that sound accurate?
104k miles with new timing belt.
That’s BEAT. I love that darn car.

One thing you want to do to try and get the compression up is to pull the fuel pressure relay and then crank it several times for at least 15 seconds this helps circulate the oil up the rings a little bit as if the oil drains off the rings you will not have enough compression. It's a high compression engine really requires that if you tried that again you might actually get it to run.

I had 98 VandanPlas had to do 2 fuel pumps, that whining noise is 100% the fuel pump. There is also an issue with the software on the car. if you do a quick start to say move the car around your driveway and you turn it off cold, the computer will dump a bunch of fuel and do sort of a vaporlock. There is a specific starting sequence cant remember, I think it was keep it at half throttle and crank it forever and it will eventually start like a spitfire. I also had to replace the intake manifold at 125k miles the butterfly valve gets gummed up. There was some issues with the Nikasil cylinders but I never ran into that problem. I also replaced the timing chain tensioners preemptively because they were made with brittle plastic and I also did the thermostat housing preemptively. Mine was a 98 and I know they sorted some of this stuff by 99 so make sure to do your own research.

I bought a $1000 ($can) non running 2001 xj8 as a parts car for my 2003 XJR. A couple of hours later and new plugs and one new coil and BAM, it's a runner and my 17 year old son claimed it as his daily. He loves it, his friends love it, and I need to find a parts car for the parts car.

LS SWAP IT! Seriously… it’s easy and it’s AMAZING… you can even put in a LS/T56 combo. I opted for a LS1 and 4L60E combo with a Texas speed cam and a 2200 stall converter… it’s hilariously fun.

Like Scott at Vehcor says "Somebody's been here before!"
I'm glad the paint is still intact at the battery tray. I've seen AA batteries explode and eat the paint clean out of an army ammo can. I think there were maybe a dozen AA batteries left in an ammo can, in a storage building over the course of a year. Between a hot summer and cold winter, those batteries didn't make, but they sure cleaned up that ODG paint in that can.

Those tanks are a nightmare. John, those keys are not Jag, they are Ford, as most of the switches in the car as that is a Jaguar - Ford era car. You can be use a Ford Mondeo aka Fusion remote of the same era in that car, is just a question of reprogram it. Be careful with those key barrels are they are know if to go bad.

This AJV8 is known for head gasket failures, and the ZF 5 Speed Gearbox is known to self destruct, so you may have to overhaul it. Hope you can save this Jag! Hello from GB.

Timing chain tensioners should be changed on the early models if I remember correctly. Not as good as the later ones. Also transmission can go bad if not maintained. I tried to save a BMW E24 that a BMW dealership abandoned for the same amount of time but it got scrapped at the end.

Backfire, the last car I had that did that it turned out to be caused by a burned valve. I'd do a compression test, oil change and cut the filter open to make sure no metal was in it. And an oil analysis wouldn't be a bad idea also, before spending more money on it.

I don’t think a non-thrashed, reasonably low mileage ‘99 would have been worth so little in 2006 that the owner would have walked away from it and the dealer wouldn’t do something with it, unless it had something worse than a fuel pump wrong with it. Do you have one of those oscilloscope setups like Eric O uses, where you can do kind of an implied compression test?

John Ross I think the’99/4.0 litre engines of this era had a potential problem with the camshaft chain drive or tensioners. This was either the subject of a recall or something Jaguar dealers had a kit for. Problem ironed out with the subsequent 4.2 litre engines.

This should become your next drift or burnout car. Leave the interior fully intact, but convert to E85 *now* and drop in an LS and run it on a Holley EFI. Do it. It’s like the Rolls but waaaayyyy newer and easier to deal with.

fun fact here if you hold down the button on the blinker as you turn the ignition on (hold for a few seconds after as well) it will go into diagnostic mode where you can read engine codes and general health and functions of the car. Hope that helps if you need it.

I bought a 2000 Xj8 for $510!. Guy selling it had attempted to replace the fuel pump and totally butchered the job, and threw it on eBay, starting price of $500, and he was only about 5 miles from me. On a lark, I proxy bid $800, and wound up winning it for $510!! Spent some money getting the fuel pump and his butchery repaired, and then spent way too much time chasing vacuum leaks. Once it was sorted, it was a rock solid dependable car. Found a wrecked XJR, and bought the "Asteroid" wheels and the XJR grille. Had a little poor mans XJR, at least in appearance. She is on my list of wish I had never sold that" cars, but the guy I sold it to is still driving it as his daily!
