- Nintendo has been known to be very aggressive in the courtroom when their games are involved and now it looks like they just got very serious around modders with a certain flash cart. Yesterday Xbox Live went down for a while bringing up more concerns around a digital future.

The Xbox servers going down really made a lot of people see how silly always online requirements are. Been saying for years its not good for us and people just brushed it off but now they see what happens when everything is controlled by one part which can fail. Weird thing was that less than a day before PSN was down for a short time compared to xbox, starting to think this was caused by some outside influence.
And by today they'll have largely forgotten about it. Gamers have the memory of a gnat.
blame it on the hackers for this.
I don't want to think what will happen with my Genshin characters collection decade later...

@@jubei20111 Annoyingly yes, it was an interesting reaction compared to when PSN was down where that had people just flat out mocking sony for yet again losing peoples data and how it wouldnt happen on xbox, then the xbox got hit much worse but people just said it sucks and xbox needs to fix it, far more tame on the xbox. We need snoop dog yo make another vid on why tf xbox needs to be connected to play games, just some big callout for change.
The All-Digital-Future isnt't the biggest problem here when a lot of your physical games also does not work due to some DRM-Check or forced always Online. That's the most concerning problem here.

I think you make a valid point - how many times have incidents like this happened, just for gamers to forget or move on? Honestly apart from HELLDIVERS 2 I can’t think of anything that was changed because gamers protested - they mostly rage for a couple days and then just move on. And people wonder why we are in the state that we are in.

@@TheAufziehvogel Thats the key issue, what our games rely on to be played and stored. It should always be down to having just a machine that turns on and a game thats on the hardrive or disc, nothing else should get in the way like logins or drm. Its why Im supporting GOG more, but its also why I bought my first PS console over xbox because I saw this coming a mile away when digging into what changes the Series made, and even when PSN went down I could still play my games.

Any used game has potentially been dumped and therefore susceptible to bans, because somewhere there is another identical ID.
This is one of the reasons why i don’t buy my Switch games 2nd hand.

you really think nintendo care about that? companies want to get rid of second hand stuff this is another reason to but its also another reason to just aquire them however you can. kinda like the fake digital is taking over while not even doing anything to push physical. they want all digital so they can shut down games whenever they want and force you to the next game or you aint playing the game anymore. to be honest nintendo isnt even up there anymore they released like what 4 games complete the 2 legend of zelda games and some others and look at how many they released half complete that need downloads. the sports game animal crossing, mario sports, i think even mario party has updates adding new stuff, console is very quickly becoming an illusion. 3 consoles need to just go already to be honest
Well if you can prove you have the legal physical cartridge they would be required to unban your system otherwise it'll be a potential lawsuit. Easy enough to prove if you got it anyway.

That xbox outage was strange, I could still download and update halo infinite, I just couldn't actually play it lol, and since it's xbox you can't launch TH-cam or any TV apps without signing in turning the console into a paperweight.

I was at work while it happened so its now working for me. But it really put into perspective Xbox as my main platform. On PS5 at least you can play and install games offline.
@CarTastic-fv6eo You can't download games offline in any platform without wifi. If you set your xbox to home xbox you can play offline or if you just buy the damn disc.
This should be a real wake up call to those that defend all digital, always online etc..I still prefer physical over digital. And yeah, they are making physical copies rely on digital aspects now too. But at least old physical games on like 7th gen and older is fine to play offline and stuff.
Got a call from my mother, the Xbox service being down prevented her from being able to play solitaire on her laptop, stop this always online garbage Microsoft.
Solitaire is available offline, I just tested it on Windows 11 with Wifi disabled.
It tells you your progress isn't automatically saved on the cloud, but it lets you play.
Your mom's app probably needed to be updated first.

Sure she could play the game itself but she could not play her game, think of it like playing a ps1 game but having the memory card being online server based.
Idk why people fanboy for consoles in the comments, if you only hype one and want the others to die, guess what, if they die then your company has a monopoly and has no incentive to keep prices at what they are. Say microsoft/sony said gnite. Suddenly nintendo might be like “hmm our console is worth double and games are $100 now” and vice versa. You want all companies to do well as you need competition. Not just for prices but for innovation.

With the amount of internet services down yesterday, I'd argue that losing access to our video games would be the least of our concerns in the face of a major internet outage.

Xbox, PlayStation and even Steam need to remove always online access to games. Steam as a whole could really benefit from requiring less to no DRM.
Sony was doing such a good job the past year of showing that a all digital future is not the way to go, that XBOX was feeling left out and had to just get in on some of that action.
I waited for the physical version of Metroid Prime Remaster; I can wait for anything at this point. It's great excuse to tackle the rest of the backlog.
A legit use case for Mig Switch seems to be, only if you have a huge physical collection and want to take it with you on the go ... Backing up every copy.
Exactly. Not only is carrying around a ton of physical carts a bit troublesome, there could literally be thousands of dollars in there if you have a lot of games. In that sense, a flash cart with personal back ups makes perfect sense. The problem is, the switch (hardware and games especially) is still being sold and therefore Nintendo is going to care a LOT, especially since the switch successor is rumored to be backwards compatible. Hopefully it still will be.
I couldn't play my Elden Ring disc at first due to the outage, but then I realised that just turning the wifi off meant that it would no longer try to connect and I could play just fine. Beat another boss. It was a good session.
Same just turned off the internet on the Xbox and was gaming again what I don’t like is due to 360 achievement hackers you can’t earn any offline

I'm honestly baffled how people are still only now learning that digital on console, means always online.

This also isn't the first time Xbox went down and the games stopped working.
Xbox outage is an example as to why I use Nintendo. With the lack of quality single player games (not to say the multiplayer games are quality either, haven’t played online mp in at least 7 or 8 years). it’s pretty much a paperweight until it’s back on
From experience, when a company is silent on why a service is down, it's not good news. They would have to disclose a breach if that's what happened (again) but I wouldn't be shocked if emails suddenly went out after investigation and closure of any potential vulnerability. Either way, Sony has become quite the scummy company of late.

My home internet has been crapping out a lot lately, and when I was offline, I was able to play Elden Ring in offline mode after attempting to connect two times. It was funny because, I was in the power leveling area, and I imagined getting banned for gaining 40 levels offline then popping back to online as a super knight.
TLDR; Don't pirate games for a currently supported system. Once that support ends, it's fair game

I wanted to play Elden Ring on my xbox series X. Couldn't due to the outage. So I was like "hey, this is a cool moment to use one of my physical copies of games again!" So I popped in Sekiro. Then I saw that I couldn't even play my physical games! Not so sure about my console anymore now, even though the whole "polished plug and play gaming environment" really, really appeals to me.

Learn to hook an hdmi cord to tv and computer. And boom. A PC gaming library, despite being on a device most associated with internet browsing, has less drm than a home console. Its a tipsy turvy world. I know the idea of dragging files into folders might be scary to you, but when you use an iota of brain power, its actually not so bad!
Bro I can play elden ring offline but im on PlayStation its hard to do because there isnt just a option to go offline but it certainly plays when im not online. Does the xbox not allow this?
That's a game issue, was able to play RE4 remake from the disc without a connection.
@AP90x It's a game issue, some games won't let you play offline due to them being trash. But a lot of games still work offline with the disc.

12:50 that is the main reason why i started to download cracked repacks of my games to saved them in a 12tb hdd, also because i noticed some games don't play well with Linux while a cracked version works flawlessly through Wine.
Dead Rising's different release dates just sounds like how movies go on sale digitally before physical, and they promote that with, "Get it before bluray."
Other games, like Alan Wake 2, at least gave some reason about cost and sold it a little cheaper, even though it will have a physical version later this year.
Capcom isn't even bothering to make an excuse. Companies want you to buy digital, and they know that all it takes is customer impatience to convince people to buy that way.
The craziest thing about this outage is that for some reason, Xbox 360 still had Xbox Live and so I didn't even know about the outage until my friend told me about it.
If you are not buying physical, then you are part of the problem. If it is a game you really care about, buy physical!

Still have yet to play Alan Wake 2. I will play it when I have it physically. Same with Baldurs gate 3. No game is too big for me to wait for a physical release. And if its digital only then I skip it. I have plenty of games to play.

I wonder if Nintendo will be banning switches based on who bought a Mig Switches. From the lawsuit they say they are asking information about who bought the Mig Switch from moddedhardware (email, names, shipping address, etc.) It looks like they want to know how many were sold, but I wouldn't be surprised knowing Nintendo if they were to.

Many developers started as modders. Many other types of serious artists did "illegal" fan art while they were learning their craft. Fair use comes down to motive.
It’s not as simple as using ROMs. It’s if there’s a certificate mismatch. Meaning it’s not the cert for the game. When pirating you never know what you’re going to get so don’t do it if you don’t want to be banned.

I had to reset my Series X yesterday, because It was having a heart attack. The whole Menu's were glitching out upon Booting my Console.
Today I was able to log back in. But still having issue's downloading games. The digital future sure looks great.
My controllers sometimes do not connect, and the sync button does nothing. Requires unplugging from power outlet to fix ugh

Xbox was fine for me last night. Searches and downloading were slower, but otherwise, there were no issues. Unless you are game sharing, there's no reason not to have your xbox set as home console.
My guess with Playstation Stars being gone for so long is that they discovered some major exploit or bug internally and quickly pulled down all access before any users were able to abuse it. Could very well have been some security issue as well, and its been down for so long because they are checking everything and making sure that the new update is secure.
I was pissed when the Xbox servers were down, I thought it was my internet at first but when i went on the status page i realized something happened.

My speculation on what the Switch successor will be: A new SKU Switch with upgraded graphical horsepower (minor) and a few quality of life upgrades to the joycons. The real "upgrade" is in the dock/home-console (where the real graphical horsepower uplift resides). And here's the twist / gimmick I'm not seeing anyone else consider: The handheld switch does not need to be docked to play in TV mode. In fact, you'll have a "new" controller option of using / pairing ANY SKU Switch (Switch-2, or original / oled / lite) to the console and use it like the Wii-U gamepad. You'll be able to pair up to 4 switch's simultaneously to 1 console for multiplayer games. The Switch-2 compatible game cartridge goes in the console (TV connected side) and the paired Switches just become A/V connected controllers that don'tall each require the game cartridge. So imagine the best parts of the Wii-U, the 3DS, and the current gen Switch, all wrapped into 1 ecosystem. This also solves the backwards compatibility vs DRM dilemma. They don't abandon current gen games compatibility on the new hardware (combo of hardware), and they give a reason to keep selling their current gen/SKU Switches right into and beyond release day of the Switch-2.
Nintendo always creates a new gimmick. I think this is the most plausible one they can pull off for maximum "new purchases + previous gen maintenance".
With Tomb Raider Remastered they made that trick and now it's coming on physical.
This is one instance im glad Nintendo is being aggressive. The Mig switch ripper being able to rip the UID's of games makes it Very risky to buy used games now out of fear someone ripped that cartridge then just sold it to the store.
yea they should have just released it without a dumper cause 99% of people are using it for piracy anyway. They thought the selling point and to keep it legit was to get people to dump there own carts but that has backfired and could ruined the used game market if nintendo continues bans.

One of my most satisfying feelings is when our power goes out (once or twice a year on average) and I just pull out my Switch and/or Analogue Pocket.
I lost my Red Dead Redemption savegame (xbox 360 backwards compatibility, disc in series x). It couldn't connect so i started without saving. You couldn't save without logging into xbox live. Today i reconnected and there is no old savefile left. Fck online DRM
The thing is, even if you “own” the disc, the game is still downloaded and monitored via PSN and Xbox Live. Even Nintendo does online checks for their digital content, though you can actually bypass with ‘most’ cartridges.
Point being, while this absolutely sucks when it happens, it isn’t going to change anything. People can complain via TH-cam, Xitter or threads and it won’t change a thing. It’s just an uncommon inconvenience that we will have to deal with from time to time, unfortunately.
I believe in two things: CFW modding to be available for all consoles & preserving physical media game discs. Digital is good, but leave physical games alone, please!
We need a new term to encapsulate the idea of "dosconnected physical", or offline physical. Nowadays, physical discs and carts sometimes only serve as keys to digital games. So while we we need physical games to stay, we need a particular kind of physical game, the one that is fully playable offline. Offline physical. Maybe that'll work as a term.
Microsoft was just showing how valuable your library will be once they shut down servers in the future
So what was the cause of the XBL outage yesterday? Things are back up and running but for me I had no problems signing in and playing on D2.
This just shows me that, like with most things our laws aren't able to catch up with the oncoming digital future. I feel this will get hammered out in time, like most consumer laws do, but it's gonna be a rough transitional period while we wait.

It's weird because both of my consoles, even the one that ISN'T set as my home Xbox was playing my physical games just fine. Completely disconnecting from the internet seems to let you play everything, so on the physical side, I don't think it's quite as big of an issue as some were making it

Xbox Live didn't go down for me. Not in any way I noticed, at least. I downloaded The First Descendant on Xbox last night while playing it on my PC, where I had it pre-loaded already. (I main Xbox.) It downloaded just fine.
When the download was done, I played Control for a few minutes for Reward Points, and then hopped over to Resident Evil 4 for a short while before heading to bed.
Xbox Live didn’t go down for everyone.
The problem wasnt xbox live itself, but the account. No one could log in after the outsge which meant no one could play their games

Because when I was playing The First Descendant on PC, I saw a lot of Xbox and PlayStation Gamers playing along with me. (It is a cross-platform game, if you didn't know.)
@@BrotherKnowledge. yeah, i was logged in for a bit after the outage and i didnt notice the problem until i left for a bit, came back and i couldn’t log back in. I didnt have my console setup as my home one because i didnt know that was even a thing you could do, so i literally couldn’t play even my owned physical games because i couldnt log in

I'm going to run a test. I'm taking my Xbox offline to see what games I can play when not plugged in. I'm curious about the claims of being unable to play single-player games when offline.
Sony was planning on connecting Sony Rewards and PlayStation Stars but they scrapped that idea a while ago and decided to just close Sony Rewards. The main reason why Stars has been down is someone screwed up the data tables that tracks the customers data. This was pretty serious and they had to take time to rebuild those databases.
I have a theory as to why ps stars has been down so long: A lot of these quests allow you to download the demo of a game to get your collectable or points, instead of having to own or download the whole game. I got Clouds Buster Sword just by downloading the FFVII Rebirth demo and launching it. Didn't even need to own the full game. Also got some points that way from downloading other demos. So I'm betting they're trying to fix that. Seems like a reason it would be down so long, cause they were trying to figure out how to stop it. Hopefully I'm wrong, but we'll see when they roll it back out.
It sucks when in the middle of the game and I spend hours to complete certain missions and the missions would take a while to complete and I would lose the progress. I would have to start all over again multiple times because I have not reached the save point in the game. It would be annoying to deal with these things in the middle of playing a game and the internet when down or some kind of outage happened and the outage would last for hours or even a full day to a day in a half. Thats why I liked when games would be saved on the memory cards that way I can continue where I left off instead of wasting time trying to do the same things over and over multiple times especially when spending countless hours and out of nowhere there has been barely any improvement in progress in the middle of playing the games or even to the point that progress has not be completed due to multiple failed missions.
I'm probably one of the lucky few that can play my digital games, THAT DON'T REQUIRE THE INTERNET ALL THE TIME, to be played offline every time the Xbox Live goes down.
I'm not a switch owner but have been thinking of getting one to mod now it's end of life. So I have to ask, ban you from what exactly? The online play? Or can Nintendo remotely brick your switch console?
Pirates are really stupid nowadays. I said back then that no sane reseller would sell this thing. History showed that there are a lot of insane people out there, or criminals bent on destroying gaming and more specifically Nintendo.
Nintendo really sucks with their attitude towards mods and roms. These companies don't have the means of buying or playing all old games and get mad when we do something ourselves.

Nintendo probably makes more money off suing people than actual game sales.
It was only a matter of time because Nintendo started going after the MIG Switch and Nintendo being this aggressive is proof enough for me that Switch 2 will be backwards compatible.

I would guess the PS Stars services was down to make some back end updates.
The whole Xbox Live down situation is finally making people realize how bad it is in regards to your actual 'ownership'. Maybe now people will understand why digital/streaming has its huge risks.

Not announcing a physical version only to release a physical version months afterwards is a dirty move and definitely they're hoping for a double dip purchase.

Nic all star brawl 2 is actually pretty fun, probably the best smash bros clone I’ve played. The single player mode is set up like a rouge like and is a great time to play thru
It was weird when I was trying to play the Kunitsu-Gami demo on Series X and saw a pop up message preventing me from trying it as it was asking if I owned the right to play it. In my head I thought "What!? This is a demo!" not realizing that Xbox Live was having issues. Had to uninstall and reinstall it to get it to play.
I see no reason to buy multiple copies of one game. When I want to play the game now, I want to play it now so I get it digitally.

Let's be honest, why would people really use the migswitch if not for piracy? The whole thing about backing up your own game is a nonsense usecase, it's easier to just have the cartridges rather than cycling through when you want to play a game.

You need to be signed in with the account that bought the digital game to play it on any system.
I’ve played my Xbox offline without much effort after making it the home console. It seems to depend more on the game itself. Just because a game has single player mode doesn’t mean it has an offline mode.
I guess how a game manages modding is important, but Nintendo is engaging in war if they intend to attack games that are loved for their modding capabilities.
But I'm not just pointing the finger at Nintendo, any company cowering at Nintendo & not siding with its customers, for things outside of their own control is kinda nuts. The point of modding is the freedom.
It's frustrating that we still haven't figured out digital libraries and playing offline. This was an issue with Steam for the longest time too, where if you didn't already enable offline mode BEFORE losing connection, you just couldn't access your games at all. You'd think Microsoft would have figured out a solution to this by now with all their money to throw at it.

The xbox thing yesterday was dumb but next time it happens people need to “go offline” then restart xbox and can play offline. So happy xseed is localizing memoires ys oath in felghana, it’s one of best ys games and most challenging. I imported switch version from japan so getting ps5 xseed version
i been using mig for months with pirated roms, no ban the people getting banned are switching certificates and playing online, my switch is strictly used offline
