His men standing vigil outside always gets to me. They all mourn Gabriel and they grieve with their colonel, but allow him privacy and keep others back as well. Even when Gabriel first met them, the tavern recruits stood as sentries to the colonel's "office" in the swamp. The colonel was able to inspire them to fight, but Gabriel was able to remind them of their humanity and a better future. After all the losses they'd had recently, Gabriel's death could have crippled the militia's morale.
We all need to remember the sacrifices this men and women made for our freedoms. We need to remain united even though we may disagree. That's the strength of our Republic. God bless the United States of America, all the people that contributed to our freedom in the past.

I almost feel like, if there was a book written, this scene depicts its main message. About loss, despair, freedom, what is worth fighting for, etc. This would be, the climax of the story. Though it is very somber, it rings strong and clear of what it means to Not Give Up.
