    Hi Chris, great video! I thought I'd mention Ventoy, a great tool that makes generating install media obsolete - you just use Ventoy to alter a normal USB stick, then copy any number of isos on it. When starting from it, you can select which iso to use. No time-consuming media creation, this has saved me HOURS :-) I have one fast 64 GB stick with lots of images on it, Linux, Windows install media, tools like Acronis TrueImage... I think you could save a lot of time :-)

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  2 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Thanks for this. I'm aware of Ventoy. But in a video showing how to install a single OS, using it would introduce another level of complexity, and slow the video down.

    • @lawrenceallwright7041
      @lawrenceallwright7041 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @T S - I see what Chris is saying, in his videos he wants to show new users as simply as possible how to give a new OS a trial run, and Balena Etcher is ideal for that. However I'm sure that Ventoy users (I'm one, it's a lovely tool) will know how to pop a new ISO straight onto their Ventoy stick and boot into it from the menu.

    • @yuvishanaya
      @yuvishanaya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first time I got around properly installing Ventoy and using it, - revelation. If you want to quickly review what works and what doesn't Ventoy is a good option.

      I’ve been using Ubuntu 20.04 on my raspberry pi 4 (booting from an external USB 3.0 SSD) for some time - but I am afraid to do updates because last time during the update Ubuntu reverted the pi 4 firmware to the old firmware version that can’t boot from an external SSD. Bricked my pi - which I eventually managed to fix by re-flashing the firmware to the later version again using an SD card and then my SSD boot worked again. Hopefully doing a full upgrade to 22.04 will not only improve my Linux experience (it looks really good) but also fix this update issue bug.

      I have Zorin because of Chris's review while back and for NVidia as I am an (old) gamer being and above average normy, and want to ditch windows. I still use windows because of the games and just watching YT vids and video editing and photog (DaVinci and I'm still learning GIMP from the work Adobe suite I have to use). While Zorin (and Linux in general) can support these, I'm still fence sitting only because of my type of games I play; space sims. One is on Steam, the other is on GOG. I know of WINE but still confuses me. While I want to, can I make the full switch to Linux (Zorin or this)? Space (or games in general) sims, vid & photo editing and YT vids is all I use my puter for. (... and we all know how evil Mac and Win are, plus they just annoy me in forcing me do to stuff that I don't want to)

Despite Linux being able to run games well, (and a few cases, better) the servers need you to run Windows. I suspect that the future is brighter now thanks to things like Steam OS running natively on Linux, and Windows 11 is definitely a shot in the foot thanks to alienating people with such a narrow hardware entry point.

    I can't believe it's been 10 years since I started using Linux. My first hardware Linux install was 12.04 LTS
    It's amazing to see how far Ubuntu, and Linux in general, has come in the last decade. I don't really use Ubuntu anymore, but I still watch it's development, just for old time's sake.
    I like that desktop customization options are finally getting better on Ubuntu, that was the thing I disliked about it the most when I used it, it felt akin to Mac where there were so few choices for making it look how I wanted. It feels really slick now, with that accent color fade, and the fade between light and dark mode. I hope one day all distros make picking colors that easy, I get a little annoyed by being stuck with GTK color schemes not letting you pick individual colors on XFCE at times.

    • @yuvishanaya
      @yuvishanaya 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If and in case that many choices are warranted, please have a look at the still most customizable KDE Neon and yes, Mint Cinnamon - you can make your desktop an absolute treat to the eyes. Though I get your point about the ease and accessibility available now to the masses. (Old SUSE chameleon!)

    I've dabbled a bit with MXLinux, Fedora, Ubuntu, and now Mint. Every distro has it's highs and down and it's so fun to be able to change so easily. I feel like the OS is finally a tool I can "play" with rather than beeing scared of when the next update would break stuff like with Windows. I've done some pretty big errors (including deleting the desktop environment when trying to upgrade to pipewire in Ubuntu, I have no idea how) but at least I know how to recover from those errors and I also learn a lot by doing errors.

I use it all the time (along with ALT PrtScr) and I don't want it delayed while I have to select a partial amount, etc. 14:15 Things can change rapidly and you will miss it like this when ANY "Paint" program can do the cropping any ways. Christopher, this was a great video! The first Linux I used was for my PC Operating Systems 1 College Course, Final Oral Exam, it was Open Caldera Linux, in around 1999. I brought the old clunker, and monitor to class, started it up with StartX in the Command Line to bring up the GUI, (having previously partitioned the Hard Drive using FIPS, for the Swap File). I learned how to use the Bourne Again Shell for Script Editing in PC Operating Systems 2 Class. Wow! Linux has come along ways!!! I use Lubuntu and Zorin in my older Laptops. The huge change for me happened when Ubuntu/Lubuntu introduced Bionic Beaver 18.04 LTS. Sure, I still use Windows 11, and as an experiment I use OS X Snow Leopard on my two cheap Mac Mini, yet I see Linux now easily competing with Windows 11 and Mac OS X Monterey is what Apple is up to. All of these MS/Apple/Linux are fantastic!

    As soon as the notification popped up, I anticipated an exciting review. I was right. Good review with short and essential points. Ubuntu uses GNOME and it doesn't run smoothly on older computers, it's the only problem. Overall, it's a good starting point and the stability also counts. Many businesses trust Ubuntu for stability and this is the reason we find so many commercial applications are first ported to Ubuntu. For someone who cannot change computers every couple of years, other Ubuntu distributions with light desktop environments can be of help. To those who prefer raw performance, other Ubuntu derivatives with lightweight DEs are something they'll find handy.

    I have never been overly fond of Ubuntu itself, OSes built on it have been very good, indeed. Linux Mint is one and I run it on a secondary but important PC. I will, of course, try this version of Ubuntu as I do with many, many Linux distros. It's all good fun and full of surprises. Small as they are, what you have shown here is very intriguing. As always, excellent reporting on all things cutting edge. You may go ahead and accept the compliment and have a bigger head because of it.

It runs smooth and kept my settings where I had left them prior to the upgrade. The timing of this release is quite funny to me. I recently starting running Ubuntu on my laptop but I had to use 21.10 because 20.04 didn't have the wifi driver for my specific laptop. I ended up running into some graphics driver issues as well that prevented me from using monitors with my laptop, and while those aren't guaranteed to be fixed I am tempted to try this version out anyways.

    Yes, at 12:40 there is lots of room but they can't show ANY more of the program names!! Why???
    There are 5 "Libre..." programs from *their default* install... this shows a lack of beta testing *AND* has been an issue before this release.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The five Libre Office programs are all different (Writer, Calc, etc) -- not that the user would know it from how they are displayed.

    • @ElmerFuddGun
      @ElmerFuddGun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ExplainingComputers - Yes, that is what I meant but we can't see each program name and they assume all users (new and old) can tell by the icon. Beta testing should have (or did and was ignored) reported the chopped labels as there is lots of space for the full names. Stuff like this is easy to fix and should have been done long before release. These are the included programs and not some "weird" user downloaded program with an unusually long program name.

    • @zoomosis
      @zoomosis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a pretty glaring oversight, especially for an LTS. I wonder if they will issue a fix for it.

    • @ElmerFuddGun
      @ElmerFuddGun 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zoomosis - Indeed. It seems as though they want to add more features before fixing the "little" issues. You see it all the time where the programmers want to be part of the team adding "features" and not the team fixing bugs and "little" issues like this. Perhaps it is more fun for the programmers but it is a complete turn off for users that see the same issues in "new" release after new release.

    Christopher this is slightly off topic but I think very relevant. The need for a strategy to define a 'your' digital legacy is really important. Recently our son died and he was a digital native, so no paperwork at all, no idea who who to invite to the funeral, who he banked with etc. The only way of finding out anything was to take out hard discs from his many computers, plug them into a Linux distro and search for unencrypted information, and redirect his mail to intercept letters demanding money. I know that Apple and others have started to think about this and I have seen a few articles but can I encourage everyone to not just make backups but nominate people who can get access if the need arises. Worthy of a video I think. Alan

    Nice overview. It was good to hear again about the jump from Windows 7 to Windows 8, because that was the event that finally pushed me to seriously try Linux and stay there. I hated Windows 8 so much, with UI changes that made no sense for desktop with no consideration for users, and they got plenty of feedback in that regard prior to launch. Changes for the sake of change are a tough sell. As for this, new versions of Ubuntu are always good to see, but I've never been drawn to their default desktops. I've always been more likely to use Ubuntu derivatives. I've used affiliated forks Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubunu MATE, along with Zorin and Mint(Cinnamon) in the past. Mint was always my main pick of those. I've since decided to distro hop a bit for various reasons. I've been running Devuan for a while and was just getting ready to start playing around with MX Linux with KDE Plasma on another machine. I started out with KDE and I've seen and heard that it has come a long way in the last few years and it feels like it's worth a look. That's where I'm at. I also was not quite into Snaps when I tried it. I didn't like some of the implementation and management. I know others have bigger problems with it, but I try not to get too deep into those issues. But still, I found Snaps to be lacking a little for my purposes, though they did work.
